Taking a Temperature Measurement
Taking a Temperature Measurement
This section provides instructions on how to take a predictive temperature measurement.
Read the following warnings before taking a temperature measurement:
WARNING
Use only Philips-approved disposable probe covers that have been legally cleared for your
region. For example, use only 510(k) cleared disposable probe covers in the U.S. Probe covers are
for single use only. Using unapproved probe covers, re-using a probe cover, or not using a probe
cover can result in the following:
- Discomfort to the patient
- Patient cross-contamination
- Erroneous temperature measurements
- Damage to the probe
If the patient temperature is lower than the temperature of the probe, measurement errors may
result.
When you take rectal temperature measurements, insert the probe slowly and carefully to avoid
tissue damage.
If the thermometer probe or monitor are not working properly when taking a temperature,
contact your authorized Philips service representative.
To take a temperature measurement
1 Remove the temperature probe from the probe well and firmly push the probe into a
probe cover.
Note
The oral/axillary probe is preheated to 34° C (93.2° F) upon extraction from the probe
well.
A chime sounds and the Ready icon appears, indicating that you can now take a
temperature measurement
2 Verify that the correct probe site (Oral, Axillary, or Rectal) is selected. The probe site
appears in the bottom center of the Temperature pane.
To change the probe site, see “Changing the Probe Site” on page 7-6.
3 Place the probe in the appropriate site on the patient.
An hourglass appears in the numeric pane while the monitor is calculating the
temperature value. A chime sounds when the temperature measurement is complete.
4 Press the button at the proximal end of the probe to eject the probe cover and
dispose of the cover in accordance with your facility’s policies.
5 Replace the probe in the probe well.
