EarlyVue VS30 Instructions for Use 8-3
Taking a Temperature Measurement
Considerations
Before taking a temporal temperature measurement, note the following:
Make sure the measurement site is exposed. Brush hair aside if it covers the area to
be measured.
Keep the temporal thermometer flush (flat) on the skin. If the thermometer is angled,
you will be measuring ambient air as well as the temporal artery area.
Slide the thermometer straight across the forehead, not down the side of the face
where the temporal artery could be embedded under cartilage or fat.
If the temporal artery area or behind the ear are unavailable, use one of the following
alternate sites:
- Femoral artery: slowly slide the probe across the groin.
- Lateral thoracic artery: slowly scan side-to-side in the area approximately
midway between the axilla and the nipple.
- Axilla: insert the probe in the apex of the axilla for 2 to 3 seconds.
The unit of measure displayed on the probe may not match the unit of measure
displayed on the monitor. The unit of measure on the monitor is always used in the
patient record. If necessary, your system administrator can change the unit of
measure on the probe.
To take a temperature measurement
1 Remove the thermometer from the thermometer base.
2 Make sure that the lens is clean. If not, clean with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol,
and let dry.
3 Gently position the probe flat on the center of the patient’s forehead, midway
between the eyebrow and the hairline. Press and hold the red Scan key.
4 Slowly slide the thermometer straight across the forehead, keeping the probe flat and
in contact with the skin until you reach the hairline.
Note
If more convenient, slide the probe from the hairline to the center of the forehead.
While scanning, the thermometer beeps and a red light blinks to indicate that a
measurement is in progress.
5 While still pressing the Scan key, lift the probe from the forehead and touch it to the
patient’s neck just behind the ear lobe.
6 Release the Scan key and remove the thermometer from the neck.
The patient temperature is displayed on the thermometer and in the Temp numeric
pane on the monitor.
Note
The thermometer shuts off automatically after 30 seconds. To shut the thermometer
off immediately, press and quickly release the Scan key.
7 Replace the thermometer in the thermometer base.
