1-12.5 Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout)

Certain features on this vehicle may require lockout or tagout (LOTO) prior to maintaining or servicing. Each

employer should consider the manner in which they will be using this vehicle and its associated equipment, identify

potential hazards, and then require LOTO procedures as necessary.

LOTO refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the unexpected energizing or

startup of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities.

OSHA lockout/tagout standard 29 CFR 1910.147 applies to the control of energy during servicing and/or

maintenance of machines and equipment. This standard requires employers to establish a program and utilize

procedures for affixing appropriate lockout devices and tagout devices, and to otherwise disable machines or

equipment to prevent unexpected energizing, start-up or release of stored energy in order to prevent injury to

employees.

LOTO procedures shall clearly and specifically outline the scope, purpose, authorization, rules, and techniques to

be utilized for the control of hazardous energy, and the means to enforce compliance including, but not limited to,

the following:

• A specific statement of the intended use of the procedure;

• Specific procedural steps for shutting down, isolating, blocking and securing machines or equipment to control

hazardous energy;

• Specific procedural steps for the placement, removal and transfer of lockout devices or tagout devices and the

responsibility for them

• Specific requirements for testing a machine or equipment to determine and verify the effectiveness of lockout

devices, tagout devices, and other energy control measures.

Stored Energy or Start-Up Hazard.

Follow OSHA lockout/tagout standard 29 CFR 1910.147 before:

• Maintaining or servicing

• Working in, on, under or around vehicle or equipment

Failure to comply may result in serious injury or death.
