The Pigtronix Infinity 2 is a stereo looping pedal designed for musicians seeking an intuitive and streamlined workflow. It features two independent loops, allowing for versatile Verse/Chorus type arrangements and seamless transitions between musical parts. This pedal is engineered to facilitate an intuitive musical workflow right out of the box, enabling musicians to switch between loops effortlessly, even during initial recording or while overdubbing.
One of the key usage features of the Infinity 2 is its ability to delete a loop that is not currently playing, thereby freeing up an open slot for a new loop to be created without interrupting playback. This functionality enhances creative flexibility and allows for dynamic song structuring. Many actions on the Infinity 2 are cued to occur at the loop boundary, which means musicians don't have to worry about hitting the footswitch at precisely the correct time. Instead, they can simply tell the machine what to do, and the selected action will execute at the end of the current loop, whether it's an overdub, a loop switch, or a stop.
The pedal's controls are designed for ease of use. It includes two footswitches, one for Loop 1 and another for Loop 2, both functioning similarly. A single press on either footswitch initiates recording. Pressing again closes the loop, and another press starts an overdub at the beginning of the next loop cycle. A double-tap stops the loop, while a double-tap and hold erases it. A long-press during initial recording sends the loop straight into overdub when closed. If a loop is recorded but stopped, pressing its footswitch resumes playback from the beginning.
The Infinity 2's dual loops are set to play in series for Verse/Chorus arrangements. Pressing the Loop 2 footswitch while Loop 1 is recording will close Loop 1 and immediately begin recording or playback on Loop 2. If Loop 1 is playing back or overdubbing, pressing Loop 2 will initiate recording or playback on Loop 2 at the end of Loop 1. These rules apply symmetrically to Loop 1 as well. A pending transition between loops can be canceled by pressing the footswitch of the currently playing loop.
LED indicators provide clear visual feedback on the loop's status: OFF means no audio is recorded, RED indicates recording, GREEN signifies playback, and ORANGE denotes overdubbing. Blinking LEDs (RED, GREEN, ORANGE) indicate that recording, playback, or overdub will start at the loop boundary, respectively. A slow blinking GREEN LED means the loop is stopped but contains audio.
The pedal features a VOLUME knob, which controls the volume of the loop audio only, with unity gain at 12:00. The DECAY knob is crucial for shaping loop textures. For typical looper performance, it should be set fully clockwise, allowing overdubs to pile up at full volume. Turning it fully counter-clockwise makes each overdub last for only one loop cycle. Setting the Decay knob anywhere in between creates constantly evolving loop textures that can be instantly reverted to a previous state using the Undo function.
A soft-touch MODE switch above the Loop 2 footswitch allows reassignment of the Loop 2 footswitch to alternate functions. Repeatedly pressing the MODE switch cycles through STOP, ONCE, and OCTAVE functions before returning to Loop 2 control. Pressing and holding the MODE switch activates UNDO/REDO mode. It's important to note that turning UNDO/REDO mode on and off will clear all current loop audio.
The STOP function, when assigned to the Loop 2 footswitch, allows stopping at the end of the loop cycle, instant stopping with a double-tap, fading out with a press and hold, and erasing with a double-tap and hold. Pressing STOP during initial recording prevents playback when the recording is closed. The ONCE function restarts the current loop for single-shot playback, enables stutter with repeated presses, and continuous playback with a press and hold. ONCE can also be used to start initial recording on Loop 1, with specific behaviors for closing the loop depending on whether the ONCE or Loop 1 footswitch is used. The OCTAVE function immediately switches the sample rate between 24kHz and 48kHz, with the default being 48kHz. A small red Octave LED blinks when the sample rate is 24kHz. Sample rate changes can occur during initial recording or overdub, and STOP, ONCE, and OCTAVE functions remain accessible even in UNDO/REDO mode. Audio recorded at 48kHz plays an octave down at 24kHz, and vice-versa.
The UNDO/REDO mode allows users to undo an overdub at the end of the loop cycle and redo it by pressing again. Pressing UNDO during an overdub in progress cancels it, permanently deleting the material. Only the most recent overdub can be undone. Once a new overdub is opened and closed, the previous overdub layer merges with the base layer and can no longer be undone. An overdub, once closed, can be instantly brought back by pressing the Undo remote switch again.
For maintenance and connectivity, the Infinity 2 includes a remote switch input. A TRS cable can connect an optional remote switch to trigger STOP, ONCE, and OCTAVE functions. Shorting TIP to SLEEVE triggers OCTAVE, RING to SLEEVE triggers ONCE, and both TIP and RING to SLEEVE trigger STOP. Pigtronix recommends their Universal Remote switch. The pedal operates on a standard 9VDC 2.1mm Negative Tip power supply with a current draw under 100mA.
A micro USB port is provided for future firmware updates. Users can check for updates and the Infinity 2 Updater for PC on the Pigtronix website. The update process involves connecting the unit to a PC, running the updater as administrator, selecting the Infinity 2, choosing the firmware, and clicking "Update Firmware." It's crucial not to disconnect power during this process.
The Infinity 2 also offers flexible WET/DRY routing. Its dual outputs can be configured for stereo output with clean pass-through and loop audio mixed, or for discrete Wet/Dry operation where loop audio is summed to Out 2 and clean pass-through audio to Out 1. To activate WET/DRY routing, press and hold the MODE switch until LOOP 1 and LOOP 2 LEDs turn green during power up. This setting is persistent even after power off. The STOP LED illuminates during boot up to indicate WET/DRY routing is active. To turn it off, press and hold the MODE switch during power up.
A "SECRET MODE" allows switching between VERSE/CHORUS and UNDO/REDO workflows without deleting current loop audio. If both loops contain audio, the last played audio becomes LOOP 1 when switching to UNDO/REDO mode. To activate SECRET mode, press and hold the LOOP 2 switch until LOOP 1 and LOOP 2 LEDs turn green during power up. This setting is also persistent. The OCTAVE LED illuminates during boot up to indicate SECRET mode is active. To turn it off, press and hold the LOOP 2 switch during power up. The manual notes that "Things can get a bit weird in Secret mode. Enjoy!"
The Pigtronix Infinity 2 is a robust and versatile looping tool, designed to support creative expression through its intuitive controls, flexible routing, and advanced looping functionalities.
