STARTER SYSTEM TEST FLOW CHART
Condition: Starter fails to turn motor. NOTE: Make sure engine crankshaft is free to turn before proceeding with
dynamic testing of starter system. A digital multitester must be used for this test.
With the tester on the VDC position, place the tes-
ter’s black lead on the battery negative and the red
lead on the battery positive.
Reading should be 12.4 or greater.
Remove battery and properly service.
Install fully charged shop battery to continue
test.
Disconnect the White/Red/Orange coil engagement
wires from the starter s olenoid. Connect black test-
er wire to battery ground. Connect red tester lead
to White/Red harness wire. Turn the ignition switch
as if starting the vehicle. Tester should read battery
voltage on White/Red wire.
Check voltage on both sides of circuit
breaker and ignition switch. The voltage on
both sides should be the same. NOTE:
The ignition switch actuated. Replace the
defective component.
Replace the diode assembly.
Apply dielectric grease to the terminals and rein-
stall diode. Test all wiring for the diode and the
brake pressure switch.
Repair wiring.

Test starter solenoid coil by connecting an ohmmeter between the solenoid
White/Red wire and the Orange wire. Resistance should be 4.2:.

NOTE: The footbrake must be compressed for the starter circuit to engage.
Locate starter diode under the seat next to the verti-
cal frame member. (Diode is encapsulated in rub-
ber) Remove the harness and perform a diode
check. Place the black meter lead on the female
terminal. The voltage drop should be .460 Volts in
this direction.
Now reverse the leads. Voltage should be infinite
in this direction.
If test is ok go back to the original troubleshooting
procedure.
