Overview

The Poly Studio P15 is a personal video bar designed to enhance video conferencing experiences. It integrates a camera, speaker, and microphones into a single device, making it a comprehensive solution for personal workspaces. The device is intended for a range of users, from beginners to advanced, who want to leverage its features for improved audio and video quality in virtual meetings.

Function Description

The Poly Studio P15 serves as an all-in-one audio and video peripheral for computers, connecting via a USB cable. Its primary function is to provide high-quality video and audio for video calls and conferences. The integrated camera captures video, while the speaker provides audio output, and the microphones capture speech. The device is designed to work seamlessly with various conferencing applications, allowing users to set it as their default audio and video device.

Usage Features

Video Conferencing Enhancement: The P15 is equipped with features to optimize video calls. It includes a camera that can be positioned to ensure the user's face appears in the middle of the video stream, with eyes level with the top third of the screen. The device supports various operating systems, including Windows 10 and 11, macOS versions 10.15, 11, and 12, and Chrome OS, though some high resolutions may have limitations on Chromebooks.

Privacy Shutter: A built-in physical privacy shutter allows users to block the camera lens when not in use, ensuring privacy. The shutter can be manually rotated counterclockwise to open (indicated by an illuminated LED) and clockwise to close.

LED Status Indicators: The device features an LED indicator above the camera that communicates its status. Different colors and patterns signify various states, such as:

  • Solid white: Device powered on, shutter open, idle.
  • Pulsing white: Boot initialization in progress.
  • Solid green: Camera active during video calls (or local video preview), even when video is muted.
  • Blinking green: Video muted (blinks twice, then returns to solid green).
  • Pulsing amber: Firmware update in progress.
  • Solid red: Microphone muted.
  • Blinking red: Microphone muted (blinks twice to remind the user, then returns to solid red).
  • Dim green: Speaker is outside the camera's Acoustic Fence view.
  • No Color (Browsers/ChromeOS): Shutter closed, not in a call.

These indicators help users quickly understand the device's operational status without needing to check software settings.

Default Features: Out of the box, the Poly Studio P15 comes with several features enabled by default to improve the conferencing experience:

  • Active Echo Cancellation (AEC): Reduces echo to ensure clear audio.
  • Poly NoiseBlockAI: Intelligently eliminates unwanted noises from transmitted audio while preserving the user's voice.
  • Automatic Group Camera Tracking and Framing: Automatically adjusts the camera to keep participants in view and framed appropriately.

Accessibility Features: The P15 incorporates features to accommodate users with disabilities:

  • For Users Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: Status indicator lights provide visual cues about the device's status.
  • For Users Who Are Blind, Have Low Vision, or Have Limited Vision: Audible tones play when calls are muted/unmuted and when the device is powered on/off, providing auditory feedback.
  • For Users with Limited Mobility: The integrated speaker and microphone eliminate the need for a separate headset, simplifying usage.

Tips for Great Video Conferences: The user guide provides several tips for optimizing video conferences with the P15:

  • Camera and People Positioning: Avoid excessive fidgeting, include all participants in the room if possible, and focus the camera view on people rather than background furnishings. Position the monitor to minimize distractions.
  • Clothing, Furnishings, and Backgrounds: Avoid bright or dark clothing, busy patterns, and glossy tabletops. Light pastels and muted colors are recommended. A light gray wall with a touch of blue is suggested as a background. Keep dry-erase whiteboards out of the camera's field of view.
  • Lighting: Close curtains or blinds to manage daylight. Indirect fluorescent lighting in a midrange, neutral color temperature (3600 K to 4500 K) is recommended to avoid harsh or somber appearances.
  • Audio and Noise: Mute audio when silent, keep windows and doors closed to minimize noise, and close drapes to prevent acoustic issues from reflections. When using NoiseBlockAI, avoid obstructing the microphone, tapping on the table, or rustling papers.

Poly Lens Desktop App Integration: While the device can be used without additional software, the Poly Lens Desktop App (not supported on Chromebooks) unlocks advanced configuration settings and features. This application allows users to customize and manage their device settings.

Maintenance Features

Restarting the Device: If issues arise, users can restart the Poly Studio P15 by simply unplugging and replugging the power cable. This powers off and restarts the device, often resolving minor glitches. After a restart, users may need to reselect the device as the default audio and video device in their conferencing software.

Factory Reset: A factory reset option is available to restore the device to its original factory settings. This process erases all user data and settings. It involves locating a reset pinhole on the bottom of the device, pressing and holding the reset button with a paperclip until the LED indicator changes to breathing amber, then transitions to breathing white as the device restarts. The reset is complete when the pulsing white LED turns off and an audible tone sounds.

Factory Restore: For more severe issues or an unresponsive device, a factory restore can be performed. This process completely erases the system's flash memory and restores the device to its factory software version. It involves unplugging the power, inserting a paperclip into the reset pinhole, holding the reset button, reconnecting the power supply, and continuing to hold the button for 3 seconds. The device LED pulses amber during the restore, then transitions to breathing white while restarting, finally returning to solid white.

Firmware Updates: The Poly Studio P15 supports firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and access to new features. Updates can be downloaded automatically through Microsoft Windows updates or Chromebook updates. For macOS users, or for manual updates, the Poly Lens Desktop App is required. The Poly Lens Desktop App notifies users when a firmware update is available, guiding them through the process.
