Do you have a question about the POWERWINCH 602 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Powerwinch Models 602 and 603 are anchor windlasses designed for retrieving various types of anchors. These devices feature a spur gear drive system that enables fast power-up and automatic free fall, making anchor retrieval efficient. Both models are rated for a maximum working load of 500 lbs.

Technical Specifications:

  • Model 602:
    • Anchor Type: Any
    • No Load Line Speed: 50 FPM (feet per minute)
    • Line Size: 1/2" Twisted nylon
    • Voltage: 12 Volt
    • Circuit Breaker: 40 Amps
    • Unit Weight: 42 lbs
    • Gear Ratio: 169:1
  • Model 603:
    • Anchor Type: Any
    • No Load Line Speed: 50 FPM
    • Line Size: 5/8" Twisted nylon
    • Voltage: 12 Volt
    • Circuit Breaker: 40 Amps
    • Unit Weight: 42 lbs
    • Gear Ratio: 169:1
  • Common Specifications (Both Models):
    • Unit Length: 12-1/2"
    • Unit Height: 8"
    • Unit Width: 11"
    • Approximate Boat Size: 26'-50'
    • Maximum Working Load: 500 lbs

Usage Features:

The windlass is designed for ease of installation and operation. Installation requires careful placement on the deck, ensuring the template centerline is on the centerline of the bow. It's crucial to drill the anchor line feed hole accurately to prevent rope damage. The wiring harness must be connected to a 12-volt battery system, with a 40-amp circuit breaker in place to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards.

Operation involves using a remote switch to control the "UP" and "DOWN" functions. The "UP" position retrieves the anchor, while the "DOWN" position allows the anchor to free fall. For safety, users should always stand clear of the area between the load/anchor point and the windlass, as a breaking rope could cause serious injury. It's also important to tie off the anchor onto a cleat when the windlass is not in use or when trailering the boat to relieve motor tension and prevent boat damage. Failure to do so invalidates the warranty.

The windlass should never be used to lift or move people or animals. Loose clothing, scarves, or neckties should be avoided when operating the windlass, as they can become caught in moving parts. The windlass should not be operated under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the windlass.

  • Annual Inspection: Once a year, remove the side plate and flush components with fresh water.
  • Electrical Inspection: Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion. Replace any connection or wire that is damaged, corroded, frayed, or worn.
  • Rope Inspection: The rope must be checked periodically for abrasion or deep cuts. Never splice an old rope with a new rope. Replace the rope only with Powerwinch rope or a rope tested and certified by Powerwinch, as the rope significantly affects the performance of the wildcat. Never substitute cable for rope.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Windlass not operating: This could be due to a disconnected or bad circuit breaker. The corrective action involves checking the wiring at the battery, bypassing the circuit breakers, and testing the windlass. If the windlass operates, the circuit breaker or some of the wiring between the battery and the switch is faulty. If the problem continues, replace the circuit breakers. A warning states that bypassing the circuit breaker is for electrical problem diagnosis only and should not be done for normal operation.
    • Line slipping when retrieving: This indicates a wrong rope size. Ensure the rope size is 1/2" or 5/8" Powerwinch rope or a rope certified by Powerwinch.
    • Anchor line will not free fall: This suggests the rope is tangled in the rope locker. Ensure the rope is not kinked or in knots before anchoring.

Warranty Information:

The Powerwinch Limited Warranty covers the product for two (2) years from the date of purchase by the original purchaser. This warranty covers defects in workmanship and materials. It does not cover failures resulting from improper installation, accident, abuse, neglect, improper maintenance, or use contrary to the owner's manual. It also excludes any implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose beyond two years. The warranty is non-transferable. For warranty service, the purchaser must contact the seller or Powerwinch directly.
