Overview

This document is the owner's manual for the PullRite SuperLite #2400 (20K) Industry Standard Super 5th Fifth Wheel Towing System. It provides comprehensive information on the hitch's function, proper use, installation, maintenance, and safety checks.

Function Description

The PullRite SuperLite #2400 is a fifth-wheel towing system designed to connect a fifth-wheel trailer to a tow vehicle, typically a pickup truck. Its primary function is to provide a secure and stable connection between the trailer's king pin and the truck's bed, allowing for safe towing. The system utilizes a unique king pin adapter ball and coupler tube mechanism for hitching and unhitching. The design aims to simplify the towing experience while ensuring safety and reliability.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: #2400 (20K) Industry Standard Super 5th
  • Gross Trailer Weight (Maximum): 20,000 lbs.
  • Vertical Load Weight (Max. Pin Weight): 4,000 lbs.
  • Height Adjustment: The hitch is height adjustable and can be set at three positions: 15.7", 17.2", and 18.7" (measured from the base of the hitch to the top of the Coupler Tube once properly installed). These heights are installed heights and should be considered in conjunction with the truck bed rail height.
  • Adapter Plate Bolt Torque: 75 ft. lbs.
  • Coupler Tube Set Bolt Torque: 45 ft. lbs.
  • Adapter Plate Set Screw Torque: 20 ft. lbs.
  • Latch Pin Housing Set Screw Torque: 5 ft. lbs.
  • Materials: The manual implies robust construction suitable for heavy-duty towing, with components designed for durability and secure fastening.

Usage Features

  • System Weight Rating: Emphasizes that the lowest weight rating of any component (trailer, truck, hitch, mounting kit) determines the rating of the entire towing system. Users are responsible for ensuring all components are adequately rated for the load.
  • King Pin Adapter Installation: The adapter can be installed with the hitch ball offset in two positions (ahead or behind the king pin) to adjust cab clearance. Placing the ball ahead of the king pin increases cab clearance, while placing it behind reduces trailer-to-cab clearance. The adapter must be aligned parallel with the king pin box.
  • Hitching Process:
    1. Verify the Latch Handle is pulled outward and rotated into the latched open position.
    2. Raise the trailer landing gear to position the ball above the coupler funnel.
    3. Back the truck under the kingpin adapter, ensuring the ball is oriented above the funnel coupler.
    4. Lower the trailer landing gear until the ball drops into the hitch coupler and is fully seated.
    5. Rotate the latch handle to retract the latch pin into the locked position.
  • Safety Checks Prior to Towing:
    1. Check the height of the King Pin Adapter to ensure it is seated properly below the Latch Pin.
    2. Verify the Latch Handle is secured over the ball of the King Pin Adapter.
    3. Raise trailer jack base plates slightly, lock trailer brakes, and pull the tow vehicle slowly forward to strain the trailer, confirming a secure connection.
    4. Fully retract trailer jacks.
  • Unhitching Process:
    1. Block trailer wheels to prevent rolling.
    2. Pull the Latch Handle towards the rear and rotate it into the slotted opening to release the adapter ball.
    3. Extend trailer jacks until the ball is fully removed from the Coupler Tube and above the coupler funnel.
    4. Disconnect electrical cord and break-away switch cable, then pull the truck forward.
  • Troubleshooting (Challenge vs. Solution):
    • Cannot open Latch Pin: Usually due to trailer pressure on the pin; raise trailer jacks to relieve pressure.
    • King Pin Adapter not fitting well: May be due to paint/crud buildup, bent/skewed king pins, or incorrect length king pins. Contact PullRite Customer Service for assistance.
    • Trailer overhang hitting truck bed rails: Adjust hitch coupler height or lower the king pin box; maintain at least 6" clearance between bed rails and trailer bottom.
    • Stiff latch handle mechanism: Spray with WD-40 and work the handle; if persistent, degrease and re-lube.
    • Need professional evaluation: Contact PullRite Customer Service for assessment or referral to an authorized service center.

Maintenance Features

  • Lubrication:
    • The King Pin Adapter Ball and Remote Latch System must be lubricated before each trip or as needed.
    • PullRite recommends dry graphite spray to prevent dust and debris attraction.
    • Light wet lubricants like WD-40 can also be used, but not in conjunction with dry graphite.
    • Ensure the Coupler Tube and Funnel areas are free of obstructions and lubricated.
    • When using dry graphite spray for the Remote Latch System, place the latch in both open and closed positions.
    • When using wet lube for the Remote Latch System, pull the Release Handle repeatedly to spread the lubricant.
    • Keep the King Pin Adapter Ball clean, rust-free, and lightly lubricated.
  • Annual Maintenance:
    • Inspect all mounting brackets and hitch hardware for secure fastening and tightness.
    • When storing the SuperLite hitch, lubricate the coupler and hitch parts with WD-40, dry lube, or a combination to retard rust formation.
    • Cover the assembly to prevent dirt, grime, or rust accumulation.

Warranty:

  • 5-Year Limited Warranty: Covers defects in materials and workmanship for five years or 31,068 miles (50,000 km), whichever comes first, from the installation date on the purchaser's vehicle.
  • Validation: Requires mailing a warranty card or registering online at www.pullrite.com within ten days of installation.
  • Exclusions: Defects from misuse, neglect, accidents, overloading, non-compliance with instructions, unauthorized repairs, incidental or consequential damages, commercial use, dealer representations beyond warranty scope, and normal wear/exposure.
