D. High Ash Fuel Content Maintenance
• Frequency: As needed
• By: Homeowner
Poor quality pellet fuel, or lack of maintenance, can create
conditions that make the repot ll quickly with ashes and
clinkers.
This condition makes the appliance susceptible to
overlling the repot with pellets which may result in
smoking, sooting and possible hopper res. Figure 20.1
shows an example where the repot overlls, pellets
back up into the feed tube and ash has accumulated in
the rebox.
An inefcient and non-economical method of burning of fuel
caused by poor quality pellet fuel is shown in Figure 20.2.
The correct ame size when good quality, premium pellet
fuel is burned is shown in Figure 20.3.
If the ash buildup exceeds the half way point in the repot
IMMEDIATE ATTENTION AND CLEANING IS REQUIRED.
E. Soot or Creosote Fire
Establish a routine for the fuel, wood burner and ring
technique. Check daily for creosote build-up until
experience shows how often you need to clean to be
safe. Be aware that the hotter the re the less creosote is
deposited, and weekly cleaning may be necessary in the
mild weather even though monthly cleaning may be enough
in the coldest months. Contact your local municipal or
provincial re authority for information on how to handle a
chimney re.
In the event of a soot or creosote re, close the rebox
door, exit the building immediately and contact the
proper re authorities.
DO NOT under any circumstances re-enter the building.

WARNING
Fire Risk
• High ash fuels, or lack of maintenance,
can cause the repot to overll. Follow
proper shutdown procedure if ash buildup
exceeds halfway point in repot.
• Failure to do could result in smoking,
sooting and possible hopper res.
