In the box you should have:
1 x QK-A026
1 x USB cable
1 x CD with manuals and drivers
Location: Select where your QK-A026 is to be sited. Ideally, although QK-A026 comes with an extruded
aluminum enclosure to shield it from external RF interference, it should not be fitted close to generators or
compressors (e.g. refrigerators) as they can generate substantial RF noise. It is designed to be installed in a
protected indoor environment. Generally, a suitable placement of QK-A026 is together with other types of
navigation equipment and the PC or chart plotter that will be used to display the output data. QK-A026 is
designed to be securely mounted to a suitable bulkhead or shelf in an indoor environment and needs to be
placed where it is well protected from humidity and water.
Antenna: QK-A026 is not supplied with a VHF antenna as the type of antenna and cable requirements
differ from vessel to vessel. A suitable VHF antenna will need to be connected before the receiver will
operate fully. AIS communication system frequencies are close to the duplex VHF channels used for marine
communication, so the antenna should be separated as much as possible (ideally at least 3.0 meters) from
the voice communication VHF antenna to avoid unnecessary adjacent channel interference. Best
separation is achieved by installing the antennas over each other or on separate sides of the mast. If an

Overview

The QK-A026 is a wireless AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver with integrated GPS, designed for marine navigation. It receives AIS data from nearby vessels and GPS positional data, then outputs this information via various interfaces including NMEA 0183, USB, and Wi-Fi, allowing it to be displayed on chart plotters, PCs, or other mobile devices.

Function Description:

The QK-A026 is a dual-channel AIS receiver, meaning it can simultaneously receive AIS messages on both 161.975MHz and 162.025MHz frequencies. This ensures comprehensive reception of AIS data from all transmitting vessels within range. It features a built-in GPS receiver, providing accurate positional data that can be combined with AIS information. The device acts as a multiplexer, capable of integrating additional NMEA 0183 input data from other marine sensors (such as wind, depth, or heading sensors). This combined data is then output through multiple channels: NMEA 0183, USB, and Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi connectivity supports both Ad Hoc and Station Modes (802.11 b/g/n), offering flexibility in how the data is accessed and displayed on various devices. The USB connection serves a dual purpose: it provides power to the unit and also acts as a data output port for NMEA messages. Additionally, the USB port is used for configuring the device parameters via the GUI Configuration software.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Frequency Bands: 161.975MHz & 162.025MHz (dual channel AIS reception).
  • AIS Receive Sensitivity: -105dBm@30%PER.
  • NMEA Data Format: ITU/NMEA 0183 format.
  • NMEA Output Data Rate: 38.4kbps.
  • Wi-Fi Mode: Ad Hoc and Station modes on 802.11 b/g/n.
  • Security: WPA/WPA2.
  • Network Protocols: TCP.
  • DC Supply: 5.0.0V(+/-0..2V) via micro USB.
  • Average Supply Current (typical quiescent): 180mA.
  • Maximum Supply Current (during SMS transceiver activity): 270mA.
  • Operating Temperature: -25°C to +80°C.
  • Storage Temperature: -25°C to +85°C.
  • Connectors: BNC female 50 Ohm for AIS antenna, micro USB for power and data, NMEA 0183 output terminals, NMEA 0183 input terminals, GPS antenna connector (SMA).

Usage Features:

The QK-A026 is designed for ease of use and integration into existing marine navigation systems.

  • Connectivity: It offers versatile connectivity options including NMEA 0183 for direct connection to chart plotters, USB for connection to PCs and mobile devices, and Wi-Fi for wireless access from multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Integrated GPS: The built-in GPS receiver eliminates the need for a separate GPS unit, simplifying installation and reducing clutter.
  • Multiplexing Capability: The ability to multiplex additional NMEA 0183 input data allows for a centralized data stream, combining AIS, GPS, and other sensor data into a single output.
  • Configuration Software (GUI): A dedicated GUI Configuration software allows users to adjust various settings, including baud rates for NMEA interfaces and Wi-Fi settings (Ad Hoc or Station Mode). This software is downloadable from the manufacturer's website.
  • LED Indicators: Three LEDs provide visual feedback on the device's status:
    • Power LED: Flashes at 3-second intervals when powered on.
    • AIS LED: Flashes for each valid AIS message received.
    • GPS LED: Flashes every second when receiving a valid GPS message.
  • Installation: The device comes in an extruded aluminum enclosure, providing shielding from external RF interference. It is designed for secure mounting to a bulkhead or shelf in a protected indoor environment, away from humidity and water.
  • Antenna Requirements: A suitable VHF antenna is required for AIS reception. For optimal performance and to avoid interference, it is recommended to separate the AIS VHF antenna from the voice communication VHF antenna by at least 3.0 meters. If sharing an existing VHF transmitting antenna, an active VHF antenna splitter is necessary.

Maintenance Features:

  • Firmware Upgrades: Quark-elec AIS receivers may be upgraded over time, ensuring compatibility with future standards and improvements. Users should check the manufacturer's website for the latest firmware and documentation.
  • Troubleshooting: Comprehensive instructions and troubleshooting details are available in the full QK-A026 manual, accessible online.
  • Support: Additional technical information and support can be found on the Quark-elec forum, and sales/purchasing inquiries can be directed via email.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and manufacture. Repairs or replacements are provided at no charge for parts and labor, though the customer is responsible for transportation costs. The warranty does not cover failures due to abuse, misuse, accident, unauthorized alteration, or repairs. A returns number is required before sending any unit back for repair.
