Overview

The Rada Pulse Electronic Control Box is a core component of the Rada Pulse range of electronic products, designed to create a controlled washroom environment that promotes energy and water conservation. This system is an independently mounted electronic control unit, operating at 12 V AC, 50/60 Hz, and is compatible with a 230V mains supply. It integrates with various sensors and control interfaces, making it suitable for a wide array of applications including showering, handwashing, urinal flushing, and W.C. systems.

At its heart, the Rada Pulse Control Box houses a transformer and a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). A single control box is capable of managing up to ten outlets, offering flexible configuration options such as five showers, three washbasins, one urinal, and one W.C. The system relies on external sensors and solenoid valves to regulate water flow, all of which are wired directly into the control box. For convenience, the necessary sensor and solenoid valve components are often provided as part of a complete 'Operating System' package, supplied separately.

Function Description

The Rada Pulse Control Box serves as the central intelligence for the washroom system. Its primary functions revolve around managing power, controlling water flow, and enabling system programming. The PCB within the control box is responsible for:

  • Power Supply: Providing power to remote-mounted sensors via the transformer.
  • Solenoid Valve Operation: Activating and deactivating remote-mounted solenoid valves to control water flow to the outlets.
  • Programming: Allowing operating functions to be programmed through a hand-held programmer, enabling customization of water delivery parameters.
  • Auxiliary Control: Generating signals to facilitate the operation of auxiliary items such as pumps, fans, lights, and disinfection systems.

The system utilizes two generic types of sensors:

  • Active Infra-Red Sensors: These are no-touch sensors that detect the proximity of a hand by transmitting an infra-red beam of light and receiving its reflection.
  • Passive Infra-Red Sensors: These no-touch sensors detect infra-red heat emitted by a person within their detection area.

The control box ensures safe low-voltage operation, with its 12 V AC output being internally fuse-protected. It is designed with an IP54 rating, ensuring protection against dust and splashing water, provided that blanking caps are fitted to unused cable holes and the cover seal is correctly installed. All AC cables used in the installation must be HAR approved (0.75 mm). The PCB also features four connections for auxiliary items, which must be connected via a 12V relay with a maximum coil resistance of 160 ohms. Programming of all outlets is performed using a hand-held programmer.

Usage Features

The Rada Pulse Control Box offers flexible and customizable control over washroom outlets. Key usage features include:

  • Multi-Outlet Control: A single control box can manage up to ten outlets, allowing for efficient system integration in various washroom layouts.
  • Programmable Flow Settings: Users can program specific flow settings for each outlet, including pre-flush durations, flush delays, and flush times, to optimize water usage.
  • Duty Flush Functionality: For urinals and W.C.s, a duty flush can be programmed, for example, a first flush after 12 hours of inactivity, to maintain hygiene and prevent stagnation.
  • Auxiliary Function Activation: The system supports the activation of auxiliary functions such as fans, lights, pumps, and disinfection cycles, which can be linked to specific outlet operations or programmed independently.
  • Error Detection: The hand-held controller can perform a system info 'error' check to identify incorrectly installed or faulty sensors or solenoids, aiding in quick troubleshooting.
  • Installation Template: An installation template is provided to simplify the marking and drilling of fixing positions, ensuring accurate and secure wall-mounting.
  • Permanent Connection: The appliance is designed for permanent connection to the fixed electrical wiring of the mains electric system via a double-pole switched connection unit fused at 3 amps, with at least 3 mm contact separation.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the Rada Pulse Control Box is crucial for ensuring its continued superior and safe performance. The manual outlines specific maintenance procedures and guidelines:

  • General Maintenance: Rada products are precision-engineered and require periodic attention to maintain good functional order. Installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance must adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Preventative/Precautionary Maintenance (Planned Maintenance Programmes): The frequency and extent of maintenance depend on site and operational conditions. A six-monthly visual check is recommended to inspect internal components for debris, scale deposition, deformation, damage, or corrosion. Any issues identified should be maintained or renewed as necessary.
  • Cleaning: External surfaces can be cleaned with a soft cloth and, if necessary, a mild washing-up type detergent or soap solution. Abrasive or chemical cleaning products should be avoided to prevent damage.
  • Component Replacement: The manual provides detailed procedures for replacing key components:
    • Transformer Replacement: Involves isolating the electrical supply, removing the cover, disconnecting the transformer from the mains and PCB, unscrewing fixing screws and cable glands, removing the old transformer, and refitting the new one in reverse order.
    • PCB Replacement: Requires isolating the electrical supply, removing the cover, disconnecting the transformer, noting and disconnecting sensor, solenoid, and auxiliary connections, removing fixing screws, replacing the PCB, and then reprogramming the control box with the hand-held programmer.
    • Transformer Fuse Replacement: Similar to transformer replacement, but specifically focuses on removing and refitting the fuse located in the side of the transformer.
  • Spare Parts Availability: All functional parts of Rada products are kept for up to ten years from the date of final manufacture. If a specific part is exhausted, an equivalent new product or part will be provided at a cost reflecting the repair cost of the old part, considering its age.
  • Fault Diagnosis: A comprehensive fault diagnosis table is provided to assist in troubleshooting common issues, such as all outlets not operating, individual outlets not operating, outlets running continuously or for excessive periods, or outlets running for only a short period. This table suggests causes and rectifications, including checking power, fuses, hand-held controller settings, and system error checks.
  • Installer Responsibility: The manual emphasizes that installation and maintenance must be carried out by designated, qualified, and competent personnel. The installer is also responsible for completing an information label inside the control box cover, identifying the position of individual solenoids and sensors in the building.
  • Customer Care: Rada offers after-sales support with trained staff to assist with operational difficulties. If initial troubleshooting fails, customers are advised to contact their installer, and if the issue persists, to contact their nearest Rada representative for further assistance or to arrange a service engineer visit.
