Product Description
The Reliable Model DH56 Dry Extended Coverage Horizontal
Sidewall Sprinkler is a quick-response sprinkler utilizing a
sensitive 3mm glass bulb thermal element listed for use in light
hazard applications.
Dry sprinklers are intended for use on wet, dry, and preaction
systems to protect indoor and outdoor areas that are subject
to freezing. When used on wet systems, it is important that a
minimum exposed length of barrel inside the face of the wall or
insulation is provided to offset conduction of potentially freezing
temperatures from the unconditioned (sprinkler) end along the
barrel. See Figure 6 for guidelines on using dry sprinklers on wet
systems.
Environments where dry sprinklers are employed are often
corrosive. For this reason, Model DH56 dry sprinklers have a
special wax llet placed in the gap between the cup that
supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax prevents
contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple
and must not be removed.

Overview

The Reliable Model DH56 Dry Extended Coverage Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is a quick-response sprinkler designed for fire protection in light hazard occupancies. It utilizes a sensitive 3mm glass bulb thermal element and is cULus Listed.

Function Description:

The DH56 is a horizontal sidewall dry sprinkler intended for installation in light hazard occupancies, in accordance with NFPA 13. These sprinklers are designed to provide fire protection in long and narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, decks, and rooms. Dry sprinklers are suitable for use on wet, dry, and preaction systems to protect indoor and outdoor areas that are subject to freezing. When used on wet systems, a minimum exposed length of barrel inside the face of the wall or insulation is required to offset the conduction of potentially freezing temperatures from the unconditioned (sprinkler) end along the barrel. A special wax fillet is placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss to prevent contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple, and this wax must not be removed.

Usage Features:

  • Coverage: Designed for long and narrow light hazard spaces such as hallways, decks, and rooms.
  • Trim Styles: Available in four trim styles: Standard Escutcheon, HB Escutcheon, FP Recessed Escutcheon, and SWC Cover Plate.
  • Finish Combinations: Various finish combinations are available depending on the trim style (e.g., Bronze, Chrome, White Polyester, Black Polyester, Custom Color Polyester, Electroless Nickel PTFE). Escutcheons and cover plates also come in different finishes (e.g., Polished Stainless Steel, Lacquered Brass, Chrome Bright, Chrome Dull, Bright Brass, Unfinished Bronze).
  • Installation:
    • Dry sprinklers connected to wet pipe systems must be installed with the Exposed Minimum Barrel Length located in a heated area, as indicated in Figure 6.
    • Can be installed in ductile or malleable cast iron threaded tees, or CPVC tees and adapters, provided the sprinkler inlet fitting does not interfere with the interior of the fitting (see Figure 7).
    • Do NOT install into elbows or couplings, welded outlets, mechanical tees, or gasket sealed CPVC fittings.
    • Hole Sizes for Installation:
      • Standard Escutcheon: 2-1/8" (54mm) diameter hole.
      • HB Escutcheon: 2-1/2" (64mm) diameter hole.
      • FP Recessed Escutcheon: 2-5/8" (67mm) diameter hole.
      • SWC Concealed Cover Plate: 2-5/8" (67mm) diameter hole.
    • PTFE based sealant should be applied to the sprinkler threads before installation.
    • The Model F3R installation wrench (for Standard & HB trims) or XLO2 installation wrench (for FP Recessed & SWC trims) should be used to tighten the sprinkler.
    • Caution: Do not over-tighten sprinklers. A minimum torque of 22 ft-lb (30 N-m) is recommended after applying thread sealant.
    • CPVC Fittings: Only install in listed CPVC sprinkler fittings upon verification that the fitting does not interfere with the sprinkler's inlet. Short inlet ("PL") versions are available for CPVC fittings with internal obstructions.
    • Positive Pressure Locations: Do not install with FP recessed escutcheon or SWC cover plate in locations where there is positive pressure in the cavity behind the sprinkler relative to the pressure at the sprinkler.
    • Glass Bulb Protectors: Orange bulb protectors are present to minimize damage during shipping and handling. They should be removed at the time the sprinkler system is placed into service by undoing the clasp by hand. Do not use tools for removal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection: Sprinklers and the sprinkler system should be inspected and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25 and the requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Storage: Sprinklers should remain in their original cartons and packaging until used to minimize potential damage.
  • Cleaning: Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia liquid, or any other cleaning fluids. Dust should be removed by gentle vacuuming without touching the sprinkler.
  • Replacement: Any sprinkler that has been painted (other than factory applied) should be replaced. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained for quick replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers.
  • Wax Fillet: The special wax fillet in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss must not be removed.
  • Condensation: If humidity and temperature differential cause condensation on the exposed dry sprinkler, consider wrapping the exposed barrel with insulation, foam insulating tape, or equivalent.
  • Clearance Space: Seal the clearance space around the sprinkler to prevent air leakage into the protected area and subsequent condensation.
