ter to a fire much faster than standard

The glass bulb consists of an accu-
rately controlled amount of special fluid
hermetically sealed inside a precisely
manufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially
constructed to provide fast thermal response.
At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid
in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can
be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid
expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liq-
uid pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid
to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter,
opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib-
ute the discharging water.

Overview

The Reliable F1FR Series sprinklers are quick-response fire protection devices designed for use in fixed fire protection systems, including wet, dry, deluge, or preaction systems. These sprinklers combine the durability of a standard sprinkler with the aesthetic appeal of a low-profile decorative sprinkler. They are available in various configurations, including standard upright, standard pendent, conventional, vertical sidewall, horizontal sidewall, recessed pendent, recessed horizontal sidewall, and concealed pendent types. Low-lead versions (F1FR56LL and F1FR42LL) are also available, containing less than 0.25% lead content and NSF Certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Annex G.

Function Description:

The F1FR Series sprinklers operate on a frangible glass bulb principle. The glass bulb contains a precisely controlled amount of special fluid, hermetically sealed within a glass capsule, designed for fast thermal response. At normal temperatures, the fluid exists in both liquid and vapor phases, with the vapor visible as a small bubble. When exposed to heat from a fire, the liquid expands, compressing the vapor bubble. As heating continues, the internal pressure forces the liquid to push against the bulb, eventually causing the glass to shatter. This opens the waterway, allowing water to discharge through the sprinkler and be distributed by the deflector to suppress the fire. These quick-response sprinklers have demonstrated response times in laboratory tests that are five to to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers, enabling them to apply water to a fire much more rapidly.

  • UL Listing Category: Sprinklers, Automatic & Open (VNIV), Quick Response Sprinkler.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Quick response sprinklers are intended for installation as specified in NFPA 13. It is crucial not to intermix quick response and standard response sprinklers within the same system. Care must be taken to ensure the orifice size, temperature rating, deflector style, and sprinkler type comply with the latest published standards and local authority having jurisdiction.
    • Wrenches: Model D Sprinkler Wrench is used for standard upright, pendent, conventional, and vertical sidewall sprinklers. Model GFR2 Sprinkler Wrench is used for recessed pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. Model RC1 Sprinkler Wrench is used for concealed pendent sprinklers. Using any other type of wrench may damage the sprinklers.
    • Torque: A leak-tight ½” NPT (R1/2) sprinkler joint can be achieved with a torque of 8-18 ft-lbs (10.8 - 24.4 N-m). Over-tightening beyond the maximum recommended torque can cause leakage or impairment.
    • Recessed Sprinklers: For recessed models, specific escutcheons (F1 or F2) are required. The escutcheon data table provides information on approvals and dimensions.
    • Concealed Sprinklers: Concealed models (F1FR56/CCP & F1FR56LL/CCP) utilize a threaded Model CCP cup factory-attached to the sprinkler and a push-on cover plate assembly. These sprinklers should not be installed in ceilings with positive pressure in the space above. After cutting a 2 5/8" (67mm) diameter hole in the ceiling, the sprinkler is installed with the Model RC1 Wrench. A Teflon®-based thread sealant should be applied to the sprinkler threads only. The cover plate is pushed onto the cup, and final adjustment is made by hand turning the cover plate until the skirt flange makes full contact with the ceiling. Cover plate removal requires turning in the counter-clockwise direction.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Many models are available with corrosion-resistant finishes, including polyester coated (cULus listed, FM approved, LPCB & VdS approved) and Electroless Nickel PTFE (Teflon®) plated (cULus listed).
  • Bulb Protectors: Glass bulb sprinklers are shipped with orange bulb protectors to minimize damage during shipping and handling. These protectors MUST be removed at the time the sprinkler system is placed in service for fire protection. Removal should be done by hand, undoing the clasp; tools should not be used to remove the protectors.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection and Maintenance: F1FR Series sprinklers and the sprinkler system should be inspected and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25.
  • Cleaning: Sprinklers should NOT be cleaned with soap and water, ammonia, or any other cleaning fluids. Dust should be removed using a soft brush or gentle vacuuming.
  • Damage/Paint: Any sprinkler that has been painted (other than factory-applied) or damaged in any way must be removed and replaced.
  • Spare Sprinklers: A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow for quick replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers.
  • Storage: Prior to installation, sprinklers should be maintained in their original cartons and packaging to minimize the potential for damage that could cause improper operation or non-operation.
