Overview

This document is an Operation & Installation Manual for Rinnai Continuous Flow Solar Hot Water Boosters. It covers models S26i (REU-VRM2632FFUG), S28i (REU-VCM2837FF), and S32 (REU-VRM3237WG).

Function Description:

The Rinnai Continuous Flow Solar Hot Water Booster is designed to work in conjunction with Rinnai solar hot water systems. Its primary function is to provide a gas boost to the hot water supply, ensuring a continuous flow of hot water even during periods of limited solar radiation or high hot water demand. These models are specifically designed as gas boosters for Rinnai solar hot water systems and are not suitable for use as standalone appliances for supplying hot water. For non-solar applications, Rinnai offers a dedicated range of continuous flow water heaters.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: S26i (REU-VRM2632FFUG), S28i (REU-VCM2837FF), S32 (REU-VRM3237WG).
  • Delivery Temperature: Factory pre-set and sealed to a delivery temperature of 70°C to meet regulator requirements. This setting cannot be altered by the user. Local regulations and AS/NZS 3500 requirements regarding temperature limitations for personal hygiene areas must be considered, and temperature limiting devices may be required.
  • Ignition: Electronic ignition, eliminating the need for a pilot light. Gas is only consumed when a hot water tap is open.
  • Power Supply: Requires an electric power supply to enable the automatic Anti-frost protection feature.
  • Certification: Certified by the Australian Gas Association (A.G.A. Certification Number on data plate), complies with AS 3498, and is WaterMark certified (SAI GLOBAL LIC. W208). All Rinnai gas products sold in Australia are A.G.A. certified.

Usage Features:

  • Continuous Hot Water: Ensures hot water is always available as long as electricity, water, and gas supplies are connected and hot water taps are open.
  • Compact Design: Fan-assisted appliances, making them compact and saving floor and wall space.
  • Low Noise Level: Designed for very quiet operation.
  • Smartstart® System (Optional): When fitted, this system pre-heats water in the pipework between the continuous flow unit and hot water outlets. This reduces waiting time for heated water and conserves water.
  • Integrated Control Module (S28i): The S28i model features an integrated control module with UP/DOWN buttons, ON/OFF button, Priority Button, and an LED Digital Display. However, for solar models, the water temperature is pre-set to 70°C and cannot be adjusted using these buttons.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Hot water can cause scalding, especially for children, the disabled, elderly, and infirm. Water at 65°C can cause severe burns in half a second.
    • Users are advised to always test water temperature before use (e.g., when filling a bath or shower) to ensure it is suitable and will not cause injury.
    • Children should always be supervised near hot water sources.
    • Do not touch the unit cover or flue outlet when hot.
    • Do not insert objects or spray water directly into the flue outlet.
    • Keep trees, shrubs, etc., clear of the flue outlet.
    • Steam discharge from the flue outlet on colder days is normal for high-efficiency appliances.
    • The unit may extinguish at low water flows; opening the tap further will restart heating.
    • Do not spray aerosols, use/store flammable materials, or place articles on/against the appliance while in operation.
    • Do not modify the appliance or store pool chemicals nearby.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation and Maintenance by Authorised Person: The appliance must be installed, maintained, and removed by an Authorised Person in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, current AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3500 & AS/NZS 5601, Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), and local regulations.
  • Anti-frost Protection: If freezing conditions are expected, ensure the electric power supply to the gas booster remains 'ON' to allow the automatic Anti-frost protection to operate. If power is unavailable during freezing conditions, water and gas must be turned off, and all water drained from the appliance.
  • Recommended Servicing: Rinnai recommends that the appliance be serviced every 3 years by their Service and Spare Parts network personnel.
  • Troubleshooting & Warranty: Detailed information is provided in separate Rinnai publications specific to the type of solar hot water system (Split Solar, Close Coupled Solar, Evacuated Tube Split Solar). These manuals should be provided by the installer to the end-user.
  • Accessories:
    • Recess Box: Permits recessed installation into a wall cavity, saving space. Available in plastic (Smart Box) or metal.
    • Pipe Covers: Conceal pipes and valves. Can be joined for longer pipe runs.
    • Security Cage: Protects the S32 gas booster from theft and damage.
    • Security Bracket: Custom-designed to secure S26i, S28i, and S32 gas boosters from theft.
    • Smartstart Pre-heat System: Reduces hot water delivery times and water wastage.

Regulatory Information:

  • Installation must conform to local regulations for gas, water, and electricity.
  • In Victoria, installation must be performed by a person licensed with the Plumbing Industry Commission, who provides a Compliance Certificate.
  • The appliance delivers water at high temperature; additional delivery temperature control may be required depending on the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) and local requirements.
  • All dimensions in the instructions are in millimeters unless otherwise specified.
