Overview

The Rockville RBG15FA/RBG18FA are Bass Gig series Folded Horn pro audio subwoofers, designed and engineered in the USA by a team of music enthusiasts, DJs, and musicians. These speakers are manufactured to high-quality standards, aiming to provide excellent sound quality, performance, and reliability. The goal is to deliver "live performance sound" as it was meant to be experienced.

Function Description:

These units are active (powered) subwoofers featuring a folded horn design, which acts as a physical amplifier for sound. By folding the horn back on itself, the cabinet size is significantly reduced without compromising the effect. This technique takes energy from the back of the speaker and redirects it to the front, creating a folded horn bass reflex cabinet. They are designed for sound reinforcement in various configurations, including high-pass and full-range setups with two additional sound reinforcement speakers, or a dual speaker configuration.

Common Features for RBG15FA / RBG18FA:

  • Input: Full range XLR / 1/4″ combo jack input for line-level signals from balanced output devices.
  • Output (Thru): Full range parallel XLR thru / output jacks to send the signal to another device.
  • High Pass Pre-Amp Output: XLR outputs used to send the incoming signal to a full-range active speaker or power amp, with a fixed output at 120Hz.
  • Crossover: Subwoofer Crossover with a range of 50Hz-250Hz (Low Pass).
  • Voltage: Variable voltage selector switch (110v - 220v).
  • Construction: High density MDF construction.
  • Handles: Built-in carrying handles.
  • Caster Wheels: Heavy-duty 2" (RBG-15FA) / 3" (RBG-18FA) locking caster wheels.
  • Pole Mount: Built-in pole mount socket.

Usage Features:

  • Power-On and Signal Input LED Indicators: Provide visual feedback on the unit's status and signal presence.
  • Clip Limiter Circuitry with LED Indicator: The clip limit LED lights up when the amplifier is near clipping. Occasional flickering is acceptable, but continuous illumination requires adjusting the level control and reducing the output level of connected sources to prevent premature speaker failure.
  • Protect Mode LED Indicator: Illuminates when the amplifier has entered protect mode.
  • Balanced XLR Connections: Balanced XLR thru/output jacks for parallel connections, preferred for long cable runs due to better noise rejection.
  • Subwoofer Level Adjustment: A dedicated knob to regulate the output level of the subwoofer, allowing for balancing with other speakers.
  • Subwoofer Phase Control: A phase switch (Normal/180°) reverses the polarity of the subwoofer, useful for optimizing sound based on the subwoofer's placement relative to other speakers.
  • Power Switch: Turns the unit on/off.
  • Ventilation: Designed with air vents that should not be obstructed to ensure proper cooling.

Maintenance Features:

  • Passive Heat Sink with Heat Sensitive Variable Speed Auto Turn-On Fan: The fan activates automatically when the internal temperature exceeds 131°F (55°C) and adjusts its speed based on temperature changes, ensuring optimal cooling.
  • User Serviceable Fuse Compartment: The unit includes an IEC AC power socket with a user-serviceable fuse compartment. In case of power failure, the fuse can be replaced by popping off the small door below the plug input, removing the old fuse with long nose pliers, and replacing it with a same-rated fuse. Always ensure the unit is unplugged from the wall before attempting to change the fuse.
  • Safety Instructions: Emphasizes not opening the unit (no user-serviceable parts), avoiding moisture exposure, situating away from heat sources, ensuring proper ventilation, and placing on a level, stable surface. It also addresses polarized and grounding type plugs for electrical safety.

Troubleshooting:

  • Unit Fails to Power Up: Check wall outlet connection, power cable connection, and replace damaged power cables. If still no power, check and replace the fuse in the fuse compartment (after unplugging the unit).
  • Unit Turns On, But No Sound: Check all cable connections and ensure mixing console fader and balance are set correctly with increased level.

The manual also explains the difference between balanced and unbalanced lines, recommending balanced connections for long cable runs due to their superior noise rejection. A balanced line uses three conductors (two signal wires with opposite voltage and a ground wire for shielding), while an unbalanced line uses two conductors (a "hot" conductor and a shield/ground wire that also carries signal current).
