• Don‘t throw your box in the
dustbin. If your model is not in use this box will keep it safe. If kits
are mounted on a wagon it will be slightly tight when placing it in
the original box. This guarantees safe transport. It is therefore recom-
manded to cut out certain parts of the original box. To keep the model
like the original, smaller parts (e.g. buffers) had been manufactured
separately from the body and are not tightly xed on it. Therefore they
probably can get lost. In this case you certainly may reorder them but
a complaint would not be acceptable.

Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the roco BR 012 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Roco 70340, 70341, and 78341 are HO-scale model steam locomotives, specifically the BR 012 class of the German Federal Railway (DB). This description covers their operation, maintenance, and technical specifications, drawing from the provided user manual.

Function Description

These models are designed for operation on HO-scale railway layouts, offering a detailed and authentic representation of the BR 012 steam locomotive. They are equipped with a sound decoder, providing realistic sound sequences that are synchronized with the locomotive's movement. The sound decoder is optimized for the BR 012, DB, and supports both DCC/NMRA and Motorola® digital control systems.

The locomotive's functions, including sound and lighting, are controlled digitally. The sound sequences are designed to mimic real-world operation, with the locomotive only moving after the "Dampf kochen" (steam boiling) sequence is complete and "Dampfdruck betriebsbereit" (steam pressure ready for operation) status is reached. Similarly, the "Dampfdruck absenken" (lower steam pressure) sequence will only run if the engine has already stopped when the 'F1' function key (Sound Off) is operated. This intricate linkage between driving and sound sequences enhances the realism of the model.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Scale: HO
  • Locomotive Type: Steam locomotive, BR 012 class, DB
  • Minimum Negotiable Radius: R3 (419.6 mm) with piston protection tubes. R2 (358 mm) is conditionally negotiable without piston protection tubes.
  • Control Systems: DCC/NMRA and Motorola®
  • Sound Decoder: Optimized for BR 012, DB. Factory-set to 28 running steps for optimal travel comfort.
  • Lighting: Equipped with headlights and tender lights.
  • Couplings: Designed for various coupling types, with ROCO short couplings recommended.
  • Power Supply: DC (for 70340, 70341) and AC (for 78341).

Usage Features

  1. Unpacking and Initial Setup:

    • Carefully remove the model from its packaging, pulling it out by the foil (Fig. 1).
    • Before initial operation, it is crucial to oil the bearings of the coupling rods (Fig. 11) to ensure optimal running.
    • The original packaging should be kept for storage, as it offers the best protection for the model. If additional parts are fitted, the model may fit tightly, and it might be necessary to carefully cut out sections of the packaging with a sharp knife.
  2. Running-in Period:

    • It is recommended to run the model for 30 minutes forward and 30 minutes backward without load. This helps achieve optimal smooth running and maximum tractive effort.
  3. Track Conditions:

    • Flawless operation is only guaranteed on clean tracks. ROCO track cleaning wagon (Art.-Nr. 46400) and ROCO track cleaning rubber (Art.-Nr. 10002) are recommended for track maintenance.
  4. Fitting Additional Parts (Aufrüstung):

    • The model comes with small, true-to-prototype plug-in parts for enhanced detailing (Fig. 3). These should be mounted carefully. Glue should only be used if explicitly indicated.
    • Various coupling types can be used; ROCO short couplings are recommended.
  5. Multi-Traction Operation (Mehrzugbetrieb):

    • For multi-traction operation, first remove the tender housing (Fig. 8).
    • Then, remove the bridge plug from the interface (store it carefully).
    • Finally, insert the control module plug correctly (Fig. 4).
  6. Sound Decoder Operation:

    • The sound decoder is pre-programmed with address 03 for DCC/NMRA and Motorola® systems.
    • The decoder is factory-set to 28 speed steps.
    • On Lokmaus 1 systems, the running sound can be activated via the horn button. However, the decoder must be reprogrammed to 14 speed steps for correct light function.
    • The sound functions are linked to the locomotive's movement, providing a realistic operational experience. For example, the locomotive will not move until the "steam boiling" and "steam pressure ready" sequences are complete.
    • A second signal sound can only be triggered after a second operation of the function key (i.e., after the "signal tone off" sequence).
  7. Safety Instructions:

    • The product is for indoor use only.
    • Do not expose the model to direct sunlight, strong temperature fluctuations, or high humidity.
    • Be aware of sharp edges and points on the model, which can cause injury if handled improperly.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance, approximately every 30 operating hours, is necessary to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the model.

  1. Cleaning Wheel Current Contacts (Reinigung der Radstromkontakte):

    • Wheel current contacts can become dirty on unclean tracks. Carefully remove dirt from the marked areas (Fig. 12) with a small brush.
  2. Lubrication (Schmierung):

    • Apply only small drops of oil to the marked areas in the lubrication plan (Fig. 11).
    • First, remove the locomotive and tender housings (Fig. 7, Fig. 8).
    • ROCO oiler (Art.-Nr. 10906) is recommended.
    • For lubricating gear parts (gears, worm), ROCO special grease (Art.-Nr. 10905) is recommended. Do not oil these parts when using grease.
  3. Changing Light Bulbs (Lämpchenwechsel):

    • First, remove the locomotive and tender housings (Fig. 7, Fig. 8).
    • Then, the light bulbs can be replaced (Fig. 9, Fig. 10).
  4. Installing a Smoke Generator (Einbau eines Dampfentwicklers):

    • First, remove the chimney.
    • Then, install the Seuthe smoke generator No. 10 (for conventional DC operation) or No. 11 (for digital AC or DC operation) (Fig. 5).
  5. Changing Traction Tires (Haftreifenwechsel):

    • First, remove the gear cover.
    • Then, remove the traction tire with a needle or a fine screwdriver.
    • When installing the new traction tire, ensure it is not twisted (Fig. 13).
  6. Changing Carbon Brushes (Kohlebürstenwechsel):

    • Remove the tender housing (Fig. 8).
    • Then, remove the motor and replace the carbon brushes (Fig. 9).
  7. Reassembly (Zusammenbau):

    • When reassembling, ensure the contacts are correctly positioned (Fig. 4).

Spare Parts List

The manual includes detailed exploded views and a comprehensive spare parts list with item numbers, descriptions, and price groups for both the locomotive (pages 7, 8) and tender (page 10). This allows for easy identification and ordering of replacement parts.
