WHAT IS THE GENERAL MIDI
SYSTEM?
The GM System is a universal set of
specifications for sound generating
devices which has been agreed upon
by both the Japanese MIDI
Standards Committee and the
American MMA (MIDI
Manufacturers’ Association).
These specifications seek to allow
for the creation of music data which
is not limited to equipment by a par-
ticular manufacturer or to specific
models. The GM System defines
things such as the minimum number
of voices that should be supported,
the MIDI messages that should be
recognized, which sounds corre-
spond to which Program Change
numbers, and the layout of rhythm
sounds on the keyboard.
Thanks to these specifications, any
device that is equipped with sound
sources supporting the GM System
will be able to accurately reproduce
GM Scores (music data created for
the GM System), regardless of the
make or model.
What is the Roland
GS Format?
The GS Format is a standardized set
of specifications for Roland’s sound
sources which defines the manner in
which multi-timbral sound genera-
ting units will respond to MIDI mes-
sages.
The GS Format also complies with
the GM System. In addition, the GS
Format also defines a number of
other details. These include unique
specifications for sounds and the
functions available for Tone editing
and effects (chorus & reverb), and
other specifications concerning the
manner in which sounds sources
will respond to MIDI messages. Any
device that is equipped with GS
Format sound sources can faithfully
reproduce GS Music Data (music
data created under the GS Format).
Any product carrying both the GM
and the GS logos can reproduce any
song data bearing either logo.

Das General MIDI-System ist eine
universelle Vereinheitlichung von
verschiedenen Soundmodul-
Komponenten, auf die sich das
“Japanese MIDI Standards
Committee” und die amerikanische
“MIDI Manufacturers’ Association”
geeinigt haben. Ziel dieses
Abkommens ist die Vereinfachung
des Austausches von Musikdaten,
die nicht durch einzelne Hersteller
oder besondere Modelle auf ein
bestimmtes Equipment beschrankt
bleiben. Das General MIDI (GM)-
System definiert Parameter wie z.B.
die mindest erforderliche
Polyphonie, welcher Klang zu wel-
cher Programmnummer gehört und
in welcher Reihenfolge die
Rhythmus-Sounds auf der Tastatur
angeordnet sind. Diese vereinheitli-
chten Daten ermöglichen, daß GM-
kompatible Sequenzer-Songdaten mit
jedem GM-Instrument (Hersteller-
unabhängig) abgespielt werden Кбп-
nen und dabei immer korrekte
Instrumente angewählt werden.
Das Roland GS Format
Das Roland GS Format standardisiert
bestimmte MIDI-Parameter von Gs-
kompatiblen Roland-Instrumenten.
Gleichzeitig erfüllt das GS-Format
alle Bedinungen des General MIDI
(GM)-Svstems. Neben diesen
Vorgaben definiert das GS-Format
eine Reihe weiterer Details wie z.B.
die Parameter, die die
Klangeditierung und andere
Funktionen (Hall, Chorus) betreffen
sowie die Art und Weise, wie GS-
Soundmodule bestimmte MIDI-
Informationen interpretieren.
Jedes Instrument, das mit dem GS-
Format ausgestattet ist, kann GS-
Songdaten authentisch reproduzie-
ren. Jedes Produkt, das 'GM'-
oder/und GS-kompatibel ist, tragt das
entsprechende Logo auf seiner
Bedienoberflache.

nit des éléments tels que le nombre

messages MIDI qui peuvent étre
reconnus, la correspondance entre
sons et numéros de programme et la
répartition des sonorités rythmiques
