Overview

This document is the operator's manual for the RYOBI P501 5-1/2 inch, 18 Volt Circular Saw.

Function Description:

The RYOBI P501 is an 18-volt cordless circular saw designed for cutting various wood products, including lumber, plywood, and paneling. It is capable of performing cross cuts, rip cuts, bevel cuts, and pocket cuts. The saw is engineered for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety, aiming to provide years of rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for. It is a battery-operated tool, and batteries and chargers are sold separately.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 18 Volt DC
  • Blade Diameter: 5-1/2 inches
  • Blade Arbor: 3/8 inches
  • Cutting Depth at 0°: 1-9/16 inches
  • Cutting Depth at 45°: 1-1/8 inches
  • Charger Input: 120 V, 60 Hz, AC Only (for the P110 charger)
  • Charge Rate: 1 Hour (for the P110 charger)
  • No Load Speed: 4200/min.

Usage Features:

  • Switch Trigger: Conveniently located on the underside of the handle for easy operation.
  • Lock-Off Button: Reduces the possibility of accidental starting. It must be depressed before pulling the switch trigger and resets each time the trigger is released.
  • Spindle Lock: Allows the user to secure the blade when turning the blade screw for blade changes.
  • Blade Wrench Storage: A convenient storage area for the 5 mm hex key blade wrench for quick blade changes.
  • Depth Adjustment Knob: Used to adjust the blade depth. The manual emphasizes keeping the correct blade depth setting, not exceeding 1/4 inch below the material being cut, to prevent kickback and rough cuts.
  • Bevel Adjustment Knob: Allows for bevel cuts at angles between 0° and 51.5°, with common settings for 45° and 90°.
  • Width of Cut Scale: Located on the base, it can be used to measure up to four inches to the right side of the blade and up to one inch to the left side for straight cross cuts or rip cuts.
  • Lower Blade Guard: A critical safety feature that automatically covers the blade when not in use. It should move freely and close instantly. For special cuts like pocket cuts, it can be manually retracted using the lower blade guard handle.
  • Battery System: The tool uses 18-volt nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery packs (e.g., P100, 130255004, 130224028, 1423701, 140237023, 140237021) and a compatible charger (e.g., P110). The manual details the charging process, including LED indicators for different charging statuses (fast charging, fully charged, hot battery, deeply discharged/defective battery).
  • Kickback Prevention: The manual provides extensive guidance on preventing kickback, including proper blade depth setting (1/4 inch or less exposed on the underside of the workpiece), inspecting for knots or nails, making straight cuts with a guide, using sharp blades, proper workpiece support, and maintaining a firm grip.
  • Operating Instructions: Emphasizes holding the saw firmly with both hands, avoiding placing hands on the workpiece, supporting the workpiece correctly (cut/kerf to the side, near the cut, clamped securely), placing the saw on the supported piece, and drawing a guideline.
  • Pocket Cutting: Specific instructions are provided for pocket cuts, requiring the bevel setting to be at zero and the lower blade guard to be manually swung up. It warns against cutting in reverse direction during pocket cutting.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Advices against using solvents on plastic parts and recommends using clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease.
  • Blade Maintenance: Recommends keeping saw blades clean, sharp, and properly set for efficient cutting and to prevent kickback. It suggests using gum and pitch remover, hot water, or kerosene to clean blades, explicitly stating "DO NOT USE GASOLINE."
  • Guard System Check: Users are instructed to check the lower blade guard for proper operation before each use, ensuring it moves freely and returns to the closed position.
  • Cord Inspection (for charger): Periodically inspect charger cords for damage and have them repaired by an authorized service center if necessary.
  • Damaged Parts Check: Before further use, check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage, and any other condition that may affect operation. Damaged guards or parts should be repaired or replaced by an authorized service center.
  • Battery Care: To obtain the longest possible battery life, remove the battery pack from the charger once fully charged and store it below 80°F in a "discharged" condition for storage longer than 30 days.
  • Battery Pack Recycling: The manual highlights the importance of recycling or disposing of nickel-cadmium batteries properly, providing the RBRC seal and phone number (1-800-822-8831) for information. It also warns against disassembling or destroying battery packs and touching terminals with metal objects.
  • Service: For repairs, users are advised to contact their nearest Ryobi Authorized Service Center and use only identical replacement parts.
