Overview

This document is an operator's manual for the RYOBI Electric Pressure Washer, model RY141820/RY141820VNM. It provides instructions for safe operation, technical specifications, assembly, usage, and maintenance in English, French, and Spanish.

Function Description

The RYOBI Electric Pressure Washer is designed for cleaning small to large horizontal or vertical exterior surfaces, smaller exterior objects, and structures around the house. It can be used to:

  • Clean or remove mold and mildew from weathered decks, driveways, patios, walkways, and sidewalks.
  • Remove dirt from various exterior vertical surfaces such as house exteriors, siding, fences, brick, concrete or stone walls.
  • Wash boats, outdoor furniture, powered or non-powered garden equipment, gutters, window screens, grills, and playground equipment.

The product features an automatic soap injection system. By placing the soap injection hose with its filter into the desired pressure washer detergent, detergent can be quickly and easily applied to the cleaning project. Using the soap nozzle activates the soap injector with a 20:1 dilution ratio.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Maximum Pressure: 1,800 psi (pounds per square inch)
  • Maximum Flow Rate: 4.5 LPM (1.2 GPM)
  • Electrical Connection: Nominal 120V/60Hz AC, 13 Amps. The product is precision-built with an electric motor and should not be operated on direct current (DC).
  • Double Insulation: The product features a double-insulated system, eliminating the need for a traditional three-wire grounded power cord. All exposed metal parts are isolated from internal motor components by protective insulation.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI): The pressure washer is equipped with a GFCI built into the power supply cord plug, providing additional protection against electric shock. This device guards against ground fault currents but does not protect against short circuits, overloads, or shocks. The GFCI plug can be tested using the TEST and RESET buttons.
  • Extension Cords: Only outdoor-rated extension cords marked SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOWA should be used. For cords 25 feet or less, a minimum wire gauge of 14 A.W.G. is recommended. For 50 feet, 12 A.W.G. is recommended. Cords longer than 50 feet or with a smaller gauge are not allowed. A "drip loop" should be arranged in the extension cord to prevent water from reaching the plug connection.
  • Polarized Plug: The product has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) and requires a polarized extension cord and wall outlet.

Usage Features

  • Trigger Handle with Lock-out: The trigger handle has a gripping surface for comfortable use and a lock-out feature to prevent accidental discharge. The lock-out can be engaged by pushing it up until it clicks into the slot and disengaged by pushing it down to its original position.
  • Nozzle Selection Guide: The pressure washer comes with different nozzles (Turbo, 15°, Soap) each offering a different spray pattern for various cleaning jobs. The manual provides a guide for selecting the appropriate nozzle for tasks such as cleaning concrete, brick, masonry, siding, gutters, houses, fencing, decks, patios, lawn equipment, boats, and RVs.
  • High Pressure Hose: The high pressure hose should be fully unwrapped and straightened before and during each use to prevent kinks, which can lead to high pressure leaks and serious injury.
  • Detergent Application: The unit is designed for "downstream" pressure washer detergents, typically allowing the use of 1 gallon of detergent without further dilution (20:1 ratio). Household detergents, acids, alkalines, bleaches, solvents, flammable materials, or industrial-grade solutions should not be used as they can damage the pump or cause property damage.
  • Rinsing: After detergent application, the soap injection hose should be placed in a bucket of clean water to flush out any remaining detergent from the system before shutting off the motor.
  • Carrying Handle: The unit is equipped with a carrying handle for easy transport.
  • Nozzle Storage: Nozzles can be stored in a designated area on top of the machine.
  • Power Cord Storage: The power cord can be stored using a hook-and-loop strap.
  • High Pressure Hose Storage: The high pressure hose can be neatly coiled and stored with a hook-and-loop strap.

Maintenance Features

  • General Maintenance: Plastic parts should be cleaned with clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease. Solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or penetrating oils should not come into contact with plastic parts, as they can cause damage and injury.
  • Pump Lubrication: The pump is pre-lubricated with a high-grade lubricant for the life of the unit under normal operating conditions, requiring no further lubrication.
  • Nozzle Maintenance: Clogged or dirty nozzles can cause excessive pump pressure (a pulsing sensation). Nozzles can be cleaned by blowing out foreign materials with a straightened paper clip or fine needle, or by back-flushing with a garden hose.
  • Pump Protector: Regular use of a commercially available pump protector is recommended to prolong pump life by removing hard water mineral deposits, lubricating seals and pistons, and preventing freeze damage. It should be added after every use and before storage.
  • Storage: The pressure washer should be stored in a dry, covered, frost-free area. All water must be emptied from hoses and the pump before storage. If stored below 32°F, a pump protector is required to prevent freeze damage, which would void the warranty. The spray wand and trigger handle should be disassembled and stored in their designated areas.
  • Inspections: Before each use, the entire product should be inspected for damaged, missing, or loose parts (screws, nuts, bolts, caps). All fasteners and caps should be tightened securely. The high pressure hose should be inspected for damage before every use. The pump should be visually inspected routinely for lubricant leaks.
  • Replacement Parts: When servicing, only identical replacement parts should be used.
  • Power Supply Cord Replacement: If the power supply cord needs replacement, it must be done by an authorized service center to avoid safety hazards.
