15:03EMERGENCYTILLER
:Asasafetyprecautiononwheelsteeringboats,aTshaped
emergencytillerisstoredinthestarboardcockpitlocker(portlockeronSabre38).It
iseasilyliftedfromitsmountingbracketsandwillslipoverthetopoftherudderpost
afterremovalofthecoverplate.
15:04OPERATION
:Tillerandwheelsteeringbothrequireuseinordertoobtain
familiaritywiththem.Soonafeelforyourboatwilldevelopandasensitivityto
conditionswhichwillincreaseyourcontrol.
Whenleavingtheboatatamooringorslip,makesurethewheelbrakeisproperly
tightenedorthatthetilleriscrosstiedbetweenthewinchcleats.Donotallowthe
systemtofreewheelasexcessivewearordamagemayresult.
15:05MAINTENANCEANDINSPECTION
:Bothsteeringsystemsareveryruggedand,aswith
anymechanicalsystem,susceptibletolooseningandwear.Itwill,therefore,require
routinemonthlyinspectionandmaintenancetoinsuresafetyanddependability.This
inspectionshouldincludeallenginecontrols,pedestalaccessoriesandallindividual
partsofthesteeringsystemincludingnuts,bolts,cotterpins,etc.Morefrequent
inspectionsshouldbeconductedonanextendedcruise.Bealerttoanyunusualnoiseor
reactionfromthesteeringsystemandcheckimmediately.
Thetillerrudderpostcapmaybetightenedbytakingupontheboltthroughtherudder
posttoremoveexcessplay.Therudderpostislubricatedbytwogreasecups.

Besuretheboltsholdingthetillertotherudderpostcaparetight,asanyloosenuts
mayresultinthetillerbreakingawayfromtherudderpost.Theruddershaftshouldbe
cleanedandlubricatedeverytwoyearsbyremovingtherudder.Greasethetubewith
waterproofautomotivegrease.
Thecompassandmountingbasemustberemovedtoservicethewheelsteeringmechanism.
RefertotheEdsonowner'smanualformaintenanceprocedures.
Needlebearinglocatedinthewheelshaftinthepedestalbowlneedlubricatingwith
Teflonlubricantthroughtheholeslocatedontopofthebearinghousing.Spinthewheel
whilelubricatingtoinsurethattheentirebearingisreached.Winchgreaseorwater
pumpgreasemaybesubstitutedbutTeflonlubricantispreferred.Becautiousthatthe
lubricantdoesnotrunoffontothefrictionbrakepads.
Thestainlesswirecableisconnectedtothewheelsteeringsystembymeansofaroller
chainthatridesoverasprocketandtothedrivewheelbytwoeyebolts.Lubricatethe
wirewithoilonfacialtissue.Anybreaksorburrsonthewirewillbeflaggedby
tearingoffapieceofthetissue.Replaceadamagedwireimmediatelyanddiscard.
Withoutdamageawireshouldbereplaceeveryfiveyears.Thiswiremaybekeptasan
emergencyspare.
Checkforproperwiretensionbylockingthewheelwiththefrictionbrake,andthentry
tomovetheradialdrivewheelbyhand.Tensionisbestwhenthedrivewheelcannotbe
movedwhenthewheelislocked.
Agrindingnoisewhilesteeringwillindicatethatthecablesaretootight.Adjustment
toremoveexcessslackisdonebytighteningupontheeyebolts,withthedoublelock
nuts.
Apairofidlerpulleysarelocatedatthebaseofthepedestal.Theyareadjustablein
ordertoguidethecabletothedrivewheelwithaminimumoffrictionandwear.
Alignmentiscriticalandcorrectwhenthecable,properlyattachedtothedrivewheel,
sitssquarelyinthecenterofthegrooveinthepulleywheel.Tighteningthecablemay
