Overview

This document describes the Sealey Model S701 Paint Spray Gun, a suction-feed spray gun designed for applying finishing coats. It is suitable for a wide range of materials, featuring a cam-action suction pot and stainless steel nozzle and needle, making it compatible with water-based paints.

Function Description

The primary function of the S701 Paint Spray Gun is to atomize and apply liquid coatings evenly onto surfaces. It operates by drawing paint from a suction pot and mixing it with compressed air to create a fine spray. The gun is designed to be held perpendicular to the surface and moved parallel to it, with the stroke starting before the trigger is squeezed and ending after the trigger is released. This technique ensures accurate control and an even, wet material deposit. The optimal spraying distance is between 6 to 10 inches, depending on the material and atomizing pressure, with each stroke overlapping the preceding one for a uniform finish. To maximize efficiency and reduce overspray, users are advised to spray with the lowest possible atomizing air pressure. The gun allows for adjustment of both fluid flow and fan spray width. As the spray width is altered, the fluid flow must be adjusted to maintain consistent coverage. The direction of the fan spray (horizontal or vertical) can be changed by rotating the air nozzle to the desired position and then tightening the retaining ring.

Usage Features

The spray gun requires an air supply with a pressure between 30 and 40 psi and an appropriate air flow. It is crucial to ensure the air supply is clean and does not exceed 70 psi, as excessive pressure or unclean air can shorten the product's lifespan and cause damage or injury. Users should drain the air tank daily to prevent water in the air line from damaging the gun and invalidating the warranty. The compressor air inlet filter should be cleaned weekly. For long air hoses (over 8 meters), line pressure may need to be increased. The minimum hose diameter should be 1/4" I.D., with fittings of the same inside dimensions. Hoses should be kept away from heat, oil, and sharp edges, and checked for wear, with all connections secure.

Safety is paramount when using the spray gun. Users should familiarize themselves with the application, limitations, and potential hazards. Before changing accessories, servicing, or performing any maintenance, the spray gun must be disconnected from the air supply. It is essential to wear approved safety respiratory protection and safety eye goggles. When spraying isocyanate-based finishes, an approved respirator/clean air breathing apparatus, latex gloves, and an impervious hooded coverall are required. Loose clothing, ties, watches, rings, and other jewelry should be removed, and long hair tied back. The work area must be suitable, clean, tidy, well-ventilated, and adequately lit, with children and unauthorized persons kept away. The air supply should be turned off when the gun is not in use to prevent unintentional operation.

The spray gun should never be pointed at oneself, other persons, or animals, nor should air from the hose be directed at them. The gun should not be carried by the hose, nor should the hose be yanked. The maximum air pressure of 70 psi must not be exceeded. The gun is designed for specific purposes and should not be used for any other application. Untrained persons should not operate the spray gun. It should not be used in damp or wet locations or areas with condensation, nor should it be operated if any parts are missing or damaged.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance and cleaning are crucial for the spray gun's performance and longevity. The gun should be kept in good condition, with damaged parts replaced using recommended parts only. Unauthorised parts can be dangerous and invalidate the warranty.

Before any maintenance or cleaning, the gun must be disconnected from the air supply. When reassembling, parts should be screwed hand-tight first to avoid cross-threading. If a part does not turn easily, it should be checked for correctness, unscrewed, realigned, and tried again, without using excessive force.

For cleaning the spray gun:

  1. Immerse the front end of the gun in solvent until the solvent just covers the fluid connection.
  2. Use a bristle brush and solvent to wash off accumulated paint.
  3. Avoid immersing the entire gun in solvent, as this can dissolve lubricants and dry out packing, potentially clogging narrow passages.
  4. Wipe the outside of the gun with a dampened solvent rag.
  5. Lubricate the gun daily with a light machine oil, specifically the fluid needle packing, air valve packing, side port control packing, and trigger pivot point. Silicone-containing lubricants should not be used.
  6. After spraying, flush the gun with clean thinners.

For cleaning the air nozzle, fluid nozzle, and needle assembly:

  1. Soak the nozzles in solvent to dissolve any dried material, then blow them clean with air. Handle all nozzles carefully and avoid making alterations.
  2. If probing the holes in the nozzles, use a tool softer than brass to avoid damage.
  3. Adjust the fluid needle valve so that air flow occurs before fluid flow when the gun is triggered.

Troubleshooting common issues:

  • Faulty spray (e.g., uneven pattern, spitting): Often caused by improper cleaning or dried material around the fluid nozzle tip or in the air nozzle. These parts should be soaked in solvent to soften dried material and then cleaned with a brush or cloth. Metal instruments should never be used to clean air or fluid nozzles, as these parts are precisely machined, and any damage will result in a faulty spray. If either the air nozzle or fluid nozzle is damaged, it must be replaced for a perfect spray.
  • Dried material in a dirty side port: Restricts air passage, causing a fan pattern to be forced in the direction of the clogged side. Dissolve material with thinner and blow the gun clean, avoiding poking with metal instruments.
  • Dried material around the outside of the fluid nozzle tip: Restricts atomizing air passage, resulting in an uneven pattern. This can also be caused by a loose air nozzle. Remove the air nozzle, wipe the fluid tip with a thinner-dampened rag, and tighten the air nozzle.
  • Split spray or heavy ends with a weak middle: Usually caused by too high atomization air pressure or attempting to get too wide a spray with thin material.
  • Spitting: Can be caused by dirt between the fluid nozzle seat and body, a loosely installed fluid nozzle, or a loose or defective swivel nut on the siphon cup or material hose. Clean the nozzle and seat, tighten the nozzle, and tighten or replace the swivel nut.
  • Material bubbles or "boils" in paint cup: Atomized air flowing through the paint channel to the pot, indicating the paint nozzle is not tight enough, the air nozzle is not completely screwed in, or the air net is clogged/seat is defective/nozzle insert is damaged. Tighten, clean, or replace parts accordingly.
