Do you have a question about the SEC Sentry 822 PS and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The SEC America Corp. Pump Sentry (Models 822 PS & 1622 PS) is an innovative power station designed to operate a sump pump during a power outage. It provides backup AC power by converting energy stored in an external 12-volt battery or battery bank.

Function Description:

The Pump Sentry acts as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for sump pumps. When utility AC power is available, it charges a 12-volt battery and monitors the power line. In the event of a power failure, the Pump Sentry automatically switches to battery power, converting the stored DC energy into AC power to operate the sump pump. Once AC utility power is restored, the unit automatically switches the pump back to AC utility power and recharges the battery.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage: 12V (for external battery/battery bank).
  • Battery A-Hr. Rating: Does not exceed 250 A-hr. for a single or combined battery bank.
  • Recharge Time: Approximately 13 hours for a 100 A-hr battery, and 30 hours for a 250 A-hr battery.
  • Recommended Battery Type: Only deep cycle batteries (wet cell or AGM type) conforming to Battery Council International (BCI) group size 27 or larger (up to size 31) are recommended. Marine-variety deep cycle batteries are acceptable. Car batteries are explicitly not to be used.
  • AC Outlet Capacity: Requires a wall outlet with a minimum capacity of 20A.
  • Output Voltage (Backup Mode): Generates 120 volts of AC power from the battery.
  • Audible Alarm: Activates when battery voltage dips below 10.8V during backup operation, indicating imminent loss of battery power.
  • Fuses:
    • F1 (Charger Fuse): Protects against charger or battery catastrophic failure.
    • F2 (Main Fuse): Provides secondary protection against severe overload.
  • Fan Operation: Thermostat-controlled, operates only when the internal surface temperature exceeds 100°F (45°C).

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Operation: Automatically switches between AC utility power and battery backup during power fluctuations.
  • Battery Charging: Maintains batteries at full charge when AC power is available, using a microprocessor-controlled smart charging system for optimum rates and long battery life.
  • Battery Monitor LEDs:
    • "Bottom LED Flashing": Battery is recharging.
    • "Bottom LED On": Battery is fully charged.
    • "Replace Battery LED": Illuminates when batteries degrade and can no longer maintain a full charge for sufficient periods, indicating reduced capacity.
  • Uninterruptible Power Indicator ("Power Output" LED): Illuminates when AC power is present at the output receptacle, providing power to the load (applicable in both standby and backup modes). This LED extinguishes if the main fuse is blown or the battery is exhausted.
  • ON/OFF Switch: Located to the left of the fan air intake port, used to power the unit on or off.
  • Installation Test: Includes a procedure to simulate a power failure and verify the unit's operation in "battery back up" mode.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Manual Adjustments: Once properly connected, the Pump Sentry requires no manual adjustments during operation or power transitions.
  • Battery Replacement Procedure: A specific sequence of steps must be followed to safely change the battery, including disconnecting AC power and battery cables in a precise order to prevent damage and voiding the warranty.
  • Fuse Replacement: Fuses should only be replaced with the types indicated on the fuse rating label of the unit.
  • Ventilation: Requires adequate ventilation. Do not block the fan or exit air ports, allowing at least 2 inches of air clearance on all sides. The unit should not be mounted in a confined area or in a sump pump pit/crock.
  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes critical safety precautions, including disconnecting batteries and AC power before adjustments, proper grounding, avoiding wet locations, and ensuring a well-ventilated installation area due to the risk of electrical shock, fire, and explosion from hydrogen gases generated by lead-acid batteries.

Installation Recommendations:

  • Installation by a licensed electrician or fully qualified professional is recommended.
  • The unit should be secured in a designated spot, preferably on a shelf or mounted to a wall, above the sump pit or crock, and in accordance with local electrical codes.
  • It should be in close proximity to a grounded AC outlet and the battery box (not closer than 2 feet).
  • Only the furnished battery cables with specific terminations should be used. Longer cables than those supplied are not recommended as they may adversely affect backup operation time.
  • The battery(ies) should be installed in a high-quality plastic or metal battery box with a lid.
