Overview

The Shark NZ690UK Series is a corded upright vacuum cleaner designed for household use, featuring Lift-Away Technology and an Anti Hair Wrap Brush-Roll. This vacuum is engineered to provide powerful cleaning across various floor types, from hard floors to carpets, while also offering versatile above-floor cleaning capabilities.

Function Description

The primary function of the Shark NZ690UK Series is to provide comprehensive cleaning for both floors and elevated surfaces. It operates as a corded upright vacuum, ensuring consistent power without the need for battery recharging. The vacuum is equipped with a powerful motor that generates strong suction, effectively picking up dust, debris, and pet hair.

A key feature is its Lift-Away Technology, which allows the user to detach the main pod from the floor nozzle. This transforms the upright vacuum into a portable canister vacuum, making it easier to clean stairs, upholstery, and other hard-to-reach areas. This versatility is further enhanced by the ability to use various accessories with either the handle or the wand, providing extended reach and specialised cleaning for different tasks.

The Anti Hair Wrap Brush-Roll is designed to prevent hair from tangling around the brush-roll, a common issue with many vacuum cleaners. This feature ensures continuous, efficient cleaning performance and reduces the need for manual brush-roll maintenance. The brush-roll is motorised, providing deep cleaning action on carpets and effective debris pickup on hard floors.

The vacuum offers different cleaning modes to adapt to various surfaces. In Upright Mode, the vacuum functions as a traditional upright cleaner, ideal for large floor areas. When the pod is detached, it enters Lift-Away Mode, offering portable cleaning. The power switch allows users to select between "Hard Floor" and "Carpet" settings, which adjust the brush-roll speed to suit the surface. The "Hard Floor" setting provides a slower brush-roll speed suitable for delicate carpets and hard floors, while the "Carpet" setting offers a higher speed for deep cleaning carpets.

A Suction Control Slider on the handle enables users to adjust the suction power, providing greater control over cleaning intensity and manoeuvrability, especially on carpets where reduced suction can make it easier to push the vacuum.

Usage Features

The Shark NZ690UK Series is designed for user-friendly operation with several features to enhance the cleaning experience:

  • Assembly: The vacuum is easy to assemble, requiring the user to simply insert the wand into the pod, the handle into the wand, and attach the hose to the back of the vacuum pod. All parts click firmly into place, ensuring secure connections.
  • Power Cord Management: The vacuum includes an upper cord hook that can be rotated down for easy cord access and removal. A cord holder on the side of the wand helps keep the cord in place during vacuuming, preventing it from getting in the way.
  • Brush-Roll Indicator Light: This light provides visual feedback on the brush-roll's status. A solid green light indicates that the brush-roll is spinning and working correctly. A solid red light signals a jam in the brush-roll area, prompting the user to turn off and unplug the vacuum to clear the blockage. A flashing red light indicates that the motorised floor nozzle is overheating, requiring the user to turn off the vacuum and allow it to cool down.
  • Cleaning Modes:
    • Upright Mode: To engage the brush-roll, the user steps on the floor nozzle and tilts the handle back. This mode is ideal for general floor cleaning.
    • Lift-Away Mode: By stepping on the pedal on the floor nozzle, the user can lift off the pod, transforming the vacuum into a portable unit for versatile cleaning.
    • Above-Floor Cleaning: The handle can be detached from the wand by pressing the Handle Release button, allowing for direct attachment of accessories. Alternatively, the wand can be detached from the pod by pressing the Wand Release button, providing extended reach for above-floor cleaning with accessories.
  • Accessories: The vacuum comes with a range of accessories that are compatible with both the wand and the handle, including:
    • Crevice Tool: For cleaning tight spaces, skirting boards, and ceilings.
    • Upholstery Tool: For removing pet hair and dust from curtains and delicate fabrics.
    • Dusting Brush: For dusting and cleaning various delicate surfaces.
    • 2-in-1 Duster Crevice Tool: A versatile tool combining a crevice tool for extended reach in small spaces and a soft dusting brush for cleaning multiple surfaces.
    • Pet Power Brush: Designed to pick up pet hair and loose debris, and deep clean dander from upholstery and other surfaces.
    • Multi-Surface Tool: A convertible tool for tough pet messes, featuring a stiff bristle brush for stuck-on debris and an upholstery tool for stubborn pet hair and large debris.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance of the Shark NZ690UK Series. The vacuum is designed with features that facilitate easy cleaning and troubleshooting:

  • Emptying the Dust Cup: The dust cup is easily removed by pulling up on a release button on the side of the handle. It can then be tilted forward and lifted off. To empty, the user holds the dust cup over a bin and presses a release button to open the bottom of the cup. For cleaning collected debris from the lint screen, a tab at the top of the dust cup can be lifted to open the lid.
  • Cleaning the Filters:
    • Pre-Motor Filters (Foam and Felt): These filters should be rinsed every month. With the dust cup removed, the foam and felt filters can be taken out and rinsed with cold water. Loose dirt should be tapped off between washes. It's important to allow them to air-dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinstallation to prevent liquid from entering electrical parts. Soap should not be used.
    • Post-Motor Filter: This filter should be rinsed every year. To access it, the user pulls a tab on the bottom of the filter door, then lifts off the door. The post-motor filter is then removed by pressing a tab on its side. Reinstallation involves aligning the top first, then pressing the bottom until it clicks into place.
  • Nozzle Maintenance (Anti Hair Wrap Brush-Roll): If hair is wrapped around the brush-roll, the vacuum should be used in Carpet/Low Pile mode on a bare floor surface, low-pile carpet, or a small area rug in MAX suction mode. This helps the Anti Hair Wrap brush-roll remove the hair wrap and send it to the dust cup. If hard or sharp objects are encountered, or a noise change is noticed, the user should check for blockages or objects caught in the brush-roll. Any remaining fibres after continued use should be cleared manually from the brush-roll.
  • Checking for Blockages: The manual provides clear instructions for checking blockages in various parts of the vacuum:
    • Nozzle Blockages: Check the opening at the top of the nozzle.
    • Dust Cup Blockages: Detach the dust cup, empty it, remove debris from the lint screen, and check for blockages.
    • Wand Blockages: Detach the wand from the pod and handle, and check both ends.
    • Hose Blockages: Detach the hose from the handle by pressing the release button, then detach it from the pod, and check both openings.
    • Handle Blockages: Detach the handle from the wand and check its openings.
  • Overheat Protection: The vacuum is equipped with a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum overheats, the thermostat automatically turns off the suction motor. To restart, the user must turn off and unplug the unit, empty the dust cup, clean filters, check for blockages, and allow the unit to cool for a minimum of 45 minutes before plugging it back in and restarting.

The Shark NZ690UK Series is designed to be a durable and efficient cleaning tool, with its features aimed at providing powerful performance, versatile usage, and straightforward maintenance for a long lifespan.
