Overview

This document provides an operation manual for the SHARP R-242/R-342 microwave oven, covering its functions, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The SHARP R-242/R-342 is a microwave oven designed for home food preparation. It offers various cooking modes, including manual operation, time defrost, weight defrost, and several auto menu functions. The oven allows for sequence cooking, enabling users to program up to two different stages, which can include manual cooking time and mode, time defrost, or weight defrost.

Key Functions:

  • Manual Operation: Users can set specific cooking times (up to 99 minutes 50 seconds) and microwave power levels (from 10P to 100P).
  • Time Defrost: This function allows for quick defrosting by selecting a suitable defrost period (from 0:10 to 99:50). The preset microwave power level for time defrost is 30P and cannot be changed.
  • Weight Defrost: Pre-programmed for specific foods like pork, beef, and chicken, this function defrosts based on the weight of the food (from 100g to 2000g in 100g steps).
  • Auto Menu: This feature automatically calculates the correct cooking mode and time for various pre-set food categories, including Popcorn, Jacket Potato, Chilled Pizza, Frozen Vegetables, Beverage, and Dinner Plate.
  • +1min Function (Auto Minute): Allows for direct start of cooking at 100P microwave power for 1 minute, or to extend cooking time during manual, time defrost, and auto menu operations in 1-minute increments (up to 99 minutes 50 seconds).
  • Kitchen Timer: Functions as a minute timer for tasks not involving microwave cooking, such as timing boiled eggs or monitoring standing time for cooked/defrosted food (up to 99 minutes 50 seconds).
  • Child Lock: Prevents unsupervised operation by children by locking the control panel.

Important Technical Specifications

The SHARP R-242/R-342 microwave oven models share many specifications but differ in power output, dimensions, and capacity.

General Specifications:

  • AC Line Voltage: 230 V, 50 Hz single phase
  • Distribution Line Fuse/Circuit Breaker: 10 A
  • Microwave Frequency: 2450 MHz (This product fulfills the requirement of the European standard EN55011 and is classified as group 2 class B equipment, meaning it intentionally generates radio-frequency energy for heat treatment of food and is suitable for domestic establishments.)
  • Oven Lamp: 25 W/240 V
  • Standby Mode Power Consumption: Less than 1.0 W (when the clock function is enabled).

Usage Features

The microwave oven is designed for user-friendly operation with a digital display and intuitive control panel.

Installation:

  • The oven must be placed on a secure, level surface, strong enough to support its weight and the heaviest food item.
  • It requires a minimum space of 7.5 cm between the oven and adjacent walls (one side must be open) and 30 cm above the oven for proper ventilation.
  • The rear surface should be placed against a wall.
  • The electrical outlet must be readily accessible, 230V, 50Hz, with a minimum 10A fuse or circuit breaker. A separate circuit is recommended.
  • It should not be placed near heat-generating areas, high humidity, or combustible materials.
  • The turntable and turntable support must always be correctly fitted for thorough and even cooking.

Operation:

  • Clock Setting: The oven features a 24-hour clock mode.
  • Power Levels: Offers 11 power levels, from 100P (HIGH) for fast cooking/reheating to 10P (LOW) for gentle defrosting. An "0P" setting allows the fan to operate without microwave power, useful for odour removal.
  • Door Opening: A door opening button is provided.
  • Starting/Stopping: The START/+1min key initiates cooking, while the STOP key can erase programming mistakes, temporarily stop cooking, cancel a program (press twice), or activate/deactivate the child lock.
  • Safety Features: The oven will not operate with the door open. If the door is opened during cooking, the timer pauses and resumes when the door is closed and the START/+1min key is pressed. The oven lamp lights during operation. If cooking food over the standard time at 100P, the oven's power will automatically lower to prevent overheating.

Suitable Ovenware:

  • Microwave-safe containers and utensils are essential. Round/oval dishes are preferred.
  • Small pieces of aluminium foil can be used for shielding, but must be kept at least 2cm from oven walls to prevent arcing.
  • Browning dishes, china, ceramics (without metallic decoration), glassware (e.g., Pyrex), plastic/polystyrene containers, cling film, freezer/roasting bags, paper plates/cups/kitchen paper, straw/wooden containers are generally suitable.
  • Metal cookware, recycled paper, and newspaper are not recommended due to arcing or fire risk.
  • Sealed containers, narrow-necked containers, and whole eggs in shells should not be heated due to explosion risk.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and proper care are crucial for maintaining the oven's performance and longevity.

Cleaning:

  • General: Clean the oven at regular intervals and remove any food deposits. Failure to do so can lead to deterioration of surfaces and hazardous situations.
  • Exterior: Clean with mild soap and water, then wipe with a moist cloth and dry with a soft towel.
  • Control Panel: Clean with a cloth dampened with water only, gently wiping until clean. Open the door to deactivate the panel during cleaning.
  • Oven Interior: Wipe splatters or spills with a soft damp cloth or sponge after each use while the oven is still warm. For heavier spills, use mild soap and wipe several times. Do not remove the waveguide cover.
  • Waveguide Cover: This is a fragile component and should be cleaned with care. Excessive soaking can cause disintegration.
  • Turntable and Turntable Support: Remove these parts and wash them in mild soapy water. They are dishwasher safe.
  • Door: Regularly clean both sides of the door, door seals, and adjacent parts with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Cleaning Tip: For easier cleaning, place half a lemon in a bowl with 300ml (1/2 pint) water and heat on 100% for 10-12 minutes, then wipe the oven clean with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Prohibited Cleaners: Do not use commercial oven cleaners, steam cleaners, abrasive or harsh cleaners, any containing sodium hydroxide, or scouring pads on any part of the microwave oven.

Safety and Service:

  • Do not attempt to repair or modify the oven yourself. Service or repair operations involving removal of covers that protect against microwave energy exposure should only be performed by a competent person.
  • If the oven lamp fails, consult an authorised SHARP service agent.
  • If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an authorised SHARP service agent.
  • In case of spills, immediately turn off and unplug the oven, then call an authorised SHARP service agent.
  • For any issues or questions, contact SHARP customer service or an authorised service agent. Contact information for various European countries is provided in the manual.
