Installation manual Race Unit MAGNUM
Part RM-Y6
Please read carefully before attempting any use of this product!
To install Race Unit MAGNUM you have to:
1. Gain access to the ignition coils (for best results refer to your motorcycle service
manual). Plug in the control box female connectors to the ignition coils and the male
connectors to the bike's harness. You must connect each male and female connector pair to
the same corresponding cylinder no matter left to right or right to left!
Stick type coils view
IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure when plugging the connectors that you press them well
enough to lock, this will provide sealed and reliable electrical connection, important for the
function of the system. Find appropriate place for the control box and route the cables, they
are high quality, automotive class cables however you must: Avoid moving parts as they
might damage them, the best way is to follow other cables from the bike's harnes, use cable
ties to fasten them. Make sure the place for the control box is away from heavy vibrations,
heat, and it is not constantly exposed to rain and water.

Overview

The Race Unit MAGNUM is an installation manual for a quickshifter system designed to enhance motorcycle performance. This device facilitates faster and smoother gear changes, offering various customizable features to suit different riding styles and preferences.

Function Description

The core function of the Race Unit MAGNUM is to enable clutchless upshifts by momentarily interrupting the engine's ignition, allowing the gearbox to engage the next gear without the need to operate the clutch. This results in quicker acceleration and a more fluid riding experience. The system integrates with the motorcycle's ignition coils and speed sensor, using a control box to manage the shift process.

Key functional components include:

  • Ignition Coil Integration: The device connects directly to the ignition coils, intercepting their signals to create the brief ignition cut necessary for clutchless shifting. This connection requires careful pairing of male and female connectors to the correct cylinder.
  • Speed Sensor Connection: A Posi-Tap connector is used to link the control box to the rear wheel rotation sensor signal. This provides the system with crucial speed data, which is essential for activating the quickshifter at appropriate RPMs and for features like launch control.
  • Shift Sensor: This sensor replaces the existing tie rod in the gear linkage. It detects the rider's intention to shift by measuring the force applied to the gear lever, triggering the ignition cut-off. The sensor is designed with dual threads for universal fitting and requires careful installation to ensure proper function and prevent cable tension.
  • Control Box: The central processing unit of the system, the control box, manages all parameters, including ignition interrupt time, shift sensor sensitivity, launch control, pit limiter, and the MAGNUM feature levels. It requires a negative (ground) connection to the battery for power.

Usage Features

The Race Unit MAGNUM offers a range of features designed to optimize shifting performance and provide additional control functionalities:

  • Adjustable Engine Interrupt Time (St): Riders can fine-tune the duration of the ignition cut-off from 45ms to 95ms in 5ms increments (default 60ms). This allows for customization based on gearbox characteristics and desired shift feel.
  • Shift Sensor Motion Control (SS): This parameter allows selection between "PUSH" (PH) and "PULL" (PL) sensor motion for shifting gears, accommodating different shift lever configurations (default PH).
  • Launch Control (Ad): This feature helps riders achieve optimal starts by setting an RPM limit. When activated, the engine RPM is held at a pre-set value, igniting the fuel mixture that would normally be expelled, which can result in a "pop and flame" effect. The RPM limit is configurable via the control box menu.
  • Pit Limiter (Ad/PL): Similar to launch control, the pit limiter restricts the engine speed to a user-preset value, typically controlled by a handlebar switch. This is useful for adhering to speed limits in pit lanes or other restricted areas.
  • Quickshifter MAGNUM Levels (dG): This unique feature controls ignition timing to achieve extremely fast and smooth shifts, often accompanied by a "pop and flame spit" effect. There are four levels:
    • q0: Deactivates the MAGNUM feature.
    • q1: Activates MAGNUM level 1 (4 cylinder volumes ignited in the exhaust).
    • q2: Activates MAGNUM level 2 (8 cylinder volumes ignited in the exhaust – default after reset).
    • q3: Activates MAGNUM level 3 (12 cylinder volumes ignited in the exhaust).
    • Levels 2 and 3 are recommended for straight-pipe exhaust systems due to increased heat.
  • Launch Control MAGNUM Feature (L): This feature can be activated (L1) or deactivated (L0) to enhance the launch control experience.
  • Ultra-Smooth Shift Feature (US): This option (U1) restores power on the next gear by firing sequential cylinders, ensuring a smooth transition between gears. It is particularly suitable for cruise and city riding, providing a less abrupt shift feel.
  • Shift Sensor Sensitivity Control (SC): Riders can adjust the force required to activate the shift sensor across five RPM ranges (3000-5000, 5000-7000, 7000-9000, 9000-11000, and above 11000 RPM) with three levels of sensitivity (A=low, b=medium, C=high). This allows for personalized shift activation based on riding style and engine speed.
  • Threshold RPM: The quickshifter activates only when the engine speed exceeds a minimum threshold, which is factory set above 3000 RPM and not adjustable.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines several procedures and considerations for maintaining the device's functionality and ensuring its longevity:

  • Installation Best Practices: Emphasizes ensuring secure connections for all plugs to provide sealed and reliable electrical contact. It also advises routing cables away from moving parts and following the bike's existing harness, using cable ties for fastening. The control box should be placed away from heavy vibrations, heat, and constant exposure to rain or water.
  • Ground Connection Importance: Stresses the critical nature of connecting the control box's single black wire to the battery's negative lead. It explicitly warns against running or cranking the engine without this connection and advises against using chassis or engine bolts for grounding.
  • Shift Sensor Calibration: A specific procedure is provided for calibrating the shift sensor, especially when replacing a new sensor or after a factory reset. This involves unplugging, powering up, plugging in the sensor, and then compressing and extending the sensor fully to set its operating values.
  • Factory Reset: The control box can be reset to factory pre-set values by turning the ignition key on (engine off, kill switch in RUN), then pressing and holding the shift lever in the upshifting direction until "rt" flashes.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: Provides guidance for adjusting the quickshifter if shifts feel rough, gears are missed, or the motorcycle front dives too long. It suggests increasing or decreasing the "St" (engine interrupt time) parameter accordingly.
  • Warranty Information: The product is covered by a one-year warranty against malfunctions from the original purchase date. The manual also includes a disclaimer regarding liability for damages and the potential impact of installation on engine manufacturer warranty coverage.
  • Warning for Launch Control: Explicit warnings are given regarding the use of launch control, particularly concerning factory-fitted exhaust systems, catalytic converters, and poorly sealed exhaust systems. It advises against twisting the throttle past 50% and holding the engine in launch control for more than 3 seconds to prevent overheating.
  • MAGNUM Feature Exhaust Recommendation: Recommends using MAGNUM feature levels 2 and 3 only with straight-pipe exhaust systems, as OEM exhausts can become very hot when arresting flames.

The Race Unit MAGNUM is designed to be a comprehensive quickshifter solution, offering both performance enhancements and a high degree of customization for the discerning rider.
