nents are behind a locked door. Unlock and open the door to gain access to the keys
and controls.
THE DISPLAY The ¼ VGA display allows the user to view up to 8 lines of events and 1 complete
system status line at the same time. The ninth line of the screen is a fixed line that is
located below the 8 listed events that are visible, and holds the highest priority
unACKowledged event. What is shown on the display depends on the current state
of the System.
If your system is set for Canada, the
oldest event appears in the first line
of the display.
If your system is set for the United
States, the most recent event
appears in the first line of the
display.
Line 10 contains the system status
information which is grouped by
event type.
Lines 11 and 12 normally display the
System messages, date and time.
This area on the display functions
like the MKB-1/-2/-3/-4 two-line
display. Press ENTER to activate the
MXL menu options.
Lines 13, 14 and 15 are used to
display more information on a
particular event when the user
presses the MORE INFO key.
The System has several displays.
When the System is first powered
on it displays a screen similar to the
one shown in Figure 1.

Overview

The Siemens MXL Multi-Line Keyboard/Display Panel is an alphanumeric display annunciator designed for use in fire safety systems, providing comprehensive event and system status information. It operates in five modes: Alarm, Supervisory, Trouble, Security, and Normal, with alarms taking the highest priority, followed by supervisories, troubles, and security conditions, all of which override Normal mode.

Function Description:

The MXL Keyboard/Display Panel serves as the primary user interface for monitoring and controlling the Siemens MXL fire safety system. When installed in a control panel, its components are secured behind a locked door, requiring access to the keys and controls for operation. The device's main function is to display system events and status, allowing users to quickly identify and respond to various conditions. It supports both Canadian and United States system configurations, which dictate the order of event display (oldest first for Canada, most recent first for the U.S.).

Important Technical Specifications:

The device features a 1/4 VGA display capable of showing up to 8 lines of events simultaneously, along with one complete system status line. A ninth fixed line is dedicated to displaying the highest priority unacknowledged event. The display has a character width of 40 characters per line. Modules and devices within the MXL system are identified by an address in the format MMM-DDD (Module Address-Device Address). Module addresses can range up to 253, and device addresses up to 254. Certain fixed module addresses are reserved (e.g., 0 for "Do Not Use," 1-2 for Analog loops, 248-251 for MKB, 252 for Reserved, 253 for MMB(SMB)-1/-2, 254 for Programmer CSG-M, and 255 for Global). Some modules, such as MKB, NET-7, RCC-1/-2/-3, RCC-1F/-2F/-3F, CMI-300, RCM-1, and NIM-1W/-1R, occupy system addresses but do not have associated devices.

Usage Features:

The MXL panel offers a range of usage features through its display keys, numeric keypad, and system control keys:

  • Display: The 1/4 VGA display shows events and system status. Line 10 provides system status information grouped by event type (ALR=Alarms, SUP=Supervisories, TBL=Troubles, SEC=Security). Lines 11 and 12 typically show system messages, date, and time. Lines 13, 14, and 15 are used to display more detailed information about a specific event when the "MORE INFO" key is pressed.
  • Display Keys:
    • UP (▲) and DOWN (▼) keys: Used to scroll through the list of events displayed on the first eight lines. The DOWN key scrolls down one event at a time, stopping at the end of the list. The UP key scrolls back up to the top. These keys do not scroll the fixed event on line nine.
    • MORE INFO key: After highlighting an event using the UP/DOWN keys, pressing MORE INFO displays basic event information (event number, address, time/date, device type, or trouble type) on lines 13-15. When used with the numerical keypad, it can jump to the top of any event queue (e.g., MORE INFO + 1 for Alarm queue, 2 for Supervisory, 3 for Trouble, 4 for Security).
  • Numeric Keypad: Keys 0-9 are used for entering module numbers, device numbers, passwords, time, date, or other information. Leading zeros can be eliminated using the SPACE key. Passwords are displayed as asterisks.
  • Command Keypad:
    • Left/Right Arrows (◄/►): Select items to the left/right of the flashing cursor (unless entering a number).
    • Up Arrow (▲): Go back to the previous item.
    • ENTER: Select the item with the flashing cursor or complete numerical entries.
    • HELP: Display a one-line message.
    • PRINT: Begin printing various lists and reports.
    • SPACE: Eliminate the need to input multiple "0"s (e.g., "1 SPACE 10 SPACE" for address 001-010).
    • CLEAR: Cancel printouts.
  • ALT and Function Keys (F1-F4): These keys, alone or in combination with ALT1 or ALT2, provide 12 special functions defined using the CSG-M Custom Software Generator.
  • System Control Keys:
    • ALARM ACK: Acknowledge a fire alarm.
    • AUD SIL: Silence or unsilence a notification appliance circuit.
    • SUPV ACK: Acknowledge a supervisory.
    • TRBL ACK: Acknowledge a trouble.
    • SEC ACK: Acknowledge a security condition.
    • RESET: Reset the system.

Event Annunciation and Acknowledgment:

  • Alarm Annunciation: When a fire is detected, the ALARM LED flashes, the internal audible sounds, and the display shows the event. For U.S. systems, the AUDIBLE SILENCE LED also flashes. The system responds with programmed output functions.
  • Supervisory Annunciation: Upon detecting a supervisory condition, the SUPERVISORY LED flashes, the internal audible sounds, and the event is displayed. Programmed output functions are also triggered.
  • Trouble Annunciation: When a trouble is detected, the TROUBLE LED flashes, the internal audible sounds, and the event is displayed. Programmed output functions are triggered.
  • Security Annunciation: For security conditions, the SECURITY LED flashes, the internal audible sounds, and the event is displayed. Programmed output functions are triggered.
  • Ground Fault Indicator: A flashing "GF" icon appears on the last line of the screen when a ground fault is detected, disappearing once the condition is corrected.

Acknowledgment Procedures:

  • Individual Acknowledgment: For alarms, supervisories, troubles, and security conditions, the first unacknowledged event appears on line nine. Pressing the respective ACK key (ALARM ACK, SUPV ACK, TRBL ACK, SEC ACK) acknowledges the displayed event and moves the next unacknowledged event to line nine. The corresponding LED glows steadily once all events of that type are acknowledged. If a printer is installed, acknowledgment messages are printed.
  • Block Acknowledgment: After noting the specific locations of events, unlock and open the control panel door. Press the respective ACK key to acknowledge all events of that type. The system will display "ALL [EVENT TYPE] ACKNOWLEDGED."
  • Silencing Audibles: Pressing AUD SIL (after unlocking the door) silences the internal audible and notification appliance circuits (NACs). For Canadian systems, the AUDIBLES SILENCED LED turns on when audibles are silenced. For U.S. systems, it flashes when NACs are active and glows steadily when all silenceable NACs are silenced until reset.

Reset Procedures:

  • Hard Reset (Power-up, Initialization, Cold Reset): Applying power to the system performs a Hard Reset, initializing the entire system. This process clears alarms, supervisories, troubles, and security conditions (if they have returned to normal), user entries (time/date on MMB-1), arm/disarm settings, manual sensitivity adjustments, and time-based control (until time is reset). The CSG-M program is not lost.
  • Soft Reset: Performed by pressing the RESET key on the MKB. A Soft Reset only works after all alarms, supervisories, troubles, and security conditions are acknowledged, and the system is silenced. Similar to a Hard Reset, it clears current event conditions and related settings but does not lose user entries, arm/disarm settings (if enabled by CSG-M), the CSG-M program, manual sensitivity adjustments, or time-based control. If RESET is pressed before all conditions are acknowledged or audibles silenced, a message indicating unacknowledged conditions will be displayed.

Maintenance Features:

  • System Supervision: The system continuously supervises all modules for presence and proper operation via a serial communications network (MNET).
  • Printer Option: If a printer is included, the system automatically prints system events. An external serial or parallel printer can be connected, with the port selection configured via the CSG-M Programming Manual. The PRINT key initiates printing, and the CLEAR key cancels it.
  • Daily Status Report: For systems with a printer, a system status message is printed daily at midnight, even if alarms or other conditions are present.

The MXL Multi-Line Keyboard/Display Panel is a robust and informative interface designed to ensure efficient monitoring and management of fire safety systems.
