QRB1...
QRB3...
Photoresistive detectors for use with Siemens burner controls, for the supervi-
sion of oil flames in the visible light spectrum.
The QRB… are used primarily in connection with oil burner controls in intermit-
tent operation.
The QRB... and this Data Sheet are intended for use by OEMs which integrate the
flame detectors in their products.
Use
The QRB... flame detectors are designed for the supervision of yellow-burning oil
flames in connection with burner controls type LAL..., LOA..., LMO... and LMV…
They are suited for frontal or lateral (90°) illumination.
The maximum spectral sensitivity of the QRB… is about 600 nm, thus giving full con-
sideration to the maximum level of visible light radiation of yellow-burning oil flames.
Since the QRB… also acquires certain parts of the radiation spectrum of other light
sources (boiler room lighting, solar radiation, etc.), the standard regulations regarding
safety in connection with extraneous light still apply.

Overview

The Siemens QRB1... and QRB3... are photoresistive flame detectors designed for the supervision of oil flames in the visible light spectrum. They are primarily used in conjunction with Siemens burner controls such as LAL..., LOA..., LMO..., and LMV... in intermittent operation. These detectors are intended for OEMs who integrate them into their products.

Function Description:

The core function of these detectors is to monitor the light radiation emitted by yellow-burning oil flames within the visible light spectrum. The light-sensitive element within the detector is a photoresistor. In its dark state, this photoresistor exhibits a high electrical resistance, typically in the MΩ range. As the intensity of light striking the photoresistor increases, its electrical resistance decreases significantly, falling into the kΩ range. This change in resistance is then evaluated by the connected burner control to generate a flame signal, indicating the presence of a flame.

A key characteristic of the QRB... detectors is their maximum spectral sensitivity, which is approximately 600 nm. This sensitivity is specifically chosen to fully account for the maximum level of visible light radiation produced by yellow-burning oil flames. However, it's important to note that the QRB... detectors can also pick up parts of the radiation spectrum from other light sources, such as boiler room lighting or solar radiation. Therefore, standard safety regulations concerning extraneous light must always be observed to prevent false flame signals. Unlike RAR selenium photocell detectors, the QRB... can detect glowing firebrick in the combustion chamber, which is an important consideration for their application.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Degree of Protection: IP40.
  • Mounting Position: Optional.
  • Detector Cable (QRB1... only): Stranded copper wire 2 x 0.75 mm², with a PVC jacket of 5.1 mm diameter. The cable length varies according to the specific type, as detailed in the "Type summary."
  • Weight:
    • QRB1... (depending on type): Approximately 20...35 g.
    • QRB3... (without cable): Approximately 35 g.
  • Environmental Conditions:
    • Storage (DIN EN 60721-3-1):
      • Climatic conditions: Class 1K3.
      • Mechanical conditions: Class 1M2.
      • Temperature range: -20...+60 °C.
      • Humidity: < 95% r.h.
    • Transport (DIN EN 60 721-3-2):
      • Climatic conditions: Class 2K2.
      • Temperature range: -20...+60 °C.
      • Humidity: < 95% r.h.
    • Operation (DIN EN 60 721-3-3):
      • Climatic conditions: Class 3K5.
      • Mechanical conditions: Class 2M2.
      • Temperature range: -20...+60 °C.
      • Humidity: < 95% r.h.
  • Conformity to EEC Directives: Electromagnetic compatibility EMC (immunity) 89/336/EEC.
  • Certificates: ISO 9001: 2000 (Certificate 00739) and ISO 14001: 2004 (Certificate 38233).
  • Sensitivity Options: Normal, High, or High (selected).
  • Casing Length "g": Varies by type (e.g., 50 mm, 65 mm, 105 mm, 137 mm).
  • Visible Cable Length "l": Varies by type (e.g., 14 cm, 17 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 33 cm, 35 cm, 42 cm, 48 cm, 50 cm, 68 cm, 70 cm, 78 cm, 80 cm, 148 cm, 150 cm).
  • Stripped Length "m": Varies by type (e.g., 20 mm, 25 mm, 40 mm, 70 mm).
  • Plug Options: With or Without.
  • Accessories (included): Small flange/clamp or Large flange/clamp, depending on the specific model.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting Flexibility:
    • QRB1...A (without soft plastic plug): Mounted using a flange. A guide groove in the securing flange and a cam on the detector clamp ensure vibration-free mounting and correct alignment towards the flame.
    • QRB1...B (with soft plastic plug): Requires a hole with a lateral groove for mounting. Sealing and securing ribs on the soft plastic plug hold the detector firmly, while a guide spring ensures correct alignment of the photoresistive element with the flame.
    • QRB3...: Supplied with a metal protective tube (17 mm diameter) and always secured with a flange and a clamp.
  • Illumination: Suited for frontal or lateral (90°) illumination.
  • Signal Transmission: To ensure practically disturbance- and loss-free signal transmission, the detector cable must always be run separately from other cables, especially high-voltage ignition cables, maintaining the greatest possible distance. Running the detector cable with other cables can lead to line capacitance, which reduces the magnitude of the flame signal. A separate cable should always be used, and the permissible length of the detector cables (specified in "Technical data") must be observed.
  • Commissioning: During commissioning, the intensity of light radiation on site is checked by measuring the detector current. Information regarding the measuring circuit and the required minimum detector current values can be found in the Data Sheet of the relevant burner control type.
  • Ordering: When ordering, the specific type reference from the "Type summary" must be provided. QRB1... models with a plug are always ordered without a flange/clamp, and vice versa.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: When cleaning the detector, only a clean cloth should be used. Burner cleansing sprays must never be used, as they could potentially damage the device or affect its performance.
  • Safety:
    • All activities, including mounting, installation, and service work, must be performed by qualified staff.
    • Before any wiring changes in the connection area of the QRB..., the burner control must be completely isolated from the mains supply (all-polar disconnection).
    • Adequate protection for the connection terminals must be ensured to prevent electric shock hazards.
    • After any work (mounting, installation, service), wiring must be checked for orderly state and safety checks performed as described in "Commissioning notes."
    • Detectors that have experienced a fall or shock must not be put into operation, even if they show no visible damage, as their safety functions may be compromised.
    • The flame detector must not be opened, interfered with, or modified.
  • Environmental Protection: Condensation, formation of ice, and ingress of water are not permitted, highlighting the importance of proper installation and environmental control.
