Straight Stretch Stitch
for Stretch Fabrics
In the 1970’s, fabrics that had stretch were introduced. Previously, only woven-
type fabrics were available for home sewers. When a standard straight stitch is
sewn on stretch fabric, it will “pop” or break when the fabric is stretched.
Special stitches were created to allow “no-pop” sewing on stretch fabrics, and
these stitches are called Stretch Stitches or Flexi-stitches. Today, stretch
fabrics are used to make exercise outfits, dance customs, swimsuits and much
more. As the fabrics of these garments stretch, so do the stitches!
