connected, serviced and repaired by a trained, experienced
service technician, familiar with all precautions required for
gas-fired equipment and licensed or otherwise qualified, in
compliance with the authority having jurisdiction.
WARNING
The venting system of this boiler is under positive pressure
when it is connected to the outdoors with 3" diameter pipe.
Leakage from this system can be hazardous and if not avoid-
ed can result in death or serious injury. In addition to the rec-
ommendations within this manual and the User’s Information
Manual, the venting system, from the blower to the outdoor
discharge, must be carefully checked annually by a qualified
service agency.

Do you have a question about the Slant/Fin VICTORY II and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an installation and operating manual for Slant/Fin VICTORY II VHS Hot Water Boilers, models VHS-30 through VHS-180. These are gas-fired cast-iron boilers designed for use with both natural gas and L.P. (propane) gas, featuring an intermittent pilot system with spark ignition.

Function Description:

The Slant/Fin VICTORY II VHS series boilers are high-efficiency, mechanically induced draft hot water boilers primarily used for space heating. They are designed to provide hot water for hydronic heating systems. The boilers incorporate a HydroStat control system that manages boiler temperature, circulator activation, and includes energy-saving features like Thermal Targeting and optional outdoor reset. They are equipped with a built-in condensation drain and trap, essential for their high-efficiency operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: VHS-30, VHS-60, VHS-90, VHS-120, VHS-150, VHS-180.
  • Fuel Type: Natural Gas and L.P. Propane Gas.
  • Ignition System: Intermittent pilot with spark ignition.
  • Boiler Type: Gas-fired cast-iron, high efficiency, mechanically induced draft.
  • Venting:
    • Category II and III: Requires UL listed single wall 3" diameter AL29-4C stainless steel material. Approved manufacturers include Heat-Fab (Saf-T Vent), Pro-Tech System (FasNSeal), Flex-L International (StaR-34), and Z-Flex (Z-Vent). Sealant must be used for all joints to ensure liquid and pressure tightness. Flue vent system cannot be cut to length.
    • Category I (for VHS-90 through VHS-180 only): Can be vented into a natural draft masonry chimney or Type "B" vent using a 3" diameter stainless steel elbow and a 3" x 5" vent adapter. Vent connectors may be single wall or Type "B" galvanized or stainless steel. Minimum connector diameter is 5 inches, potentially upsizing to 6" or 7" depending on specific requirements and shared venting with other appliances.
  • Clearances from Combustible Constructions:
    • Front: 6" (recommended 18" for service)
    • Rear: 6" (recommended 18" for service)
    • Left Side: 6" (recommended 18" for service)
    • Right Side: 12" (recommended 24" for service)
    • Top: 12" (recommended 12" for service)

  • HydroStat Control Model 3200 Features:
    • High Temperature Limit Setting: 100°-220°F (factory set 190°F).
    • Low Temperature Limit Setting: OFF or 110°-200°F (factory set OFF).
    • Economy Feature (Thermal Targeting): Reduces boiler water temperature as heating load decreases to conserve fuel. Settings from OFF, LO, 1-5, HI (1-5 correspond to number of heating zones, not including indirect water heaters).
    • Thermal Pre-Purge: Maximizes boiler efficiency by utilizing latent heat from previous run cycles.
    • Degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius display option.
    • Manual Reset Low Water Cut-Off (LWCO): Shuts down burner if low water condition is detected for 30 seconds. Meets CSD-1 code requirements. Can be set to automatic or manual reset.
    • Circulator Activation Options: Can activate circulator on T/TV call only, 11/12 call only, or both.
    • Circulator Hold Off (Enhanced Condensing Protection): Delays circulator activation until boiler reaches 125°F to reduce condensing potential.
    • Outdoor Reset Ready and Warm Weather Shutdown: Optional kit (part no. 430423000) for outdoor reset functionality.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Location: Requires a level, solid foundation. Should be near a chimney or outside wall for direct flue piping. Gas ignition system components must be protected from water.
  • Air Supply and Ventilation: Ample air supply is crucial for combustion and ventilation. Specific requirements for unobstructed openings are provided based on air source (outdoors directly, horizontal ducts, vertically from outdoors, or from inside the building) and total appliance input (Btuh).
  • Gas Piping: Must conform to local codes. Pipe joint compound must be resistant to liquefied petroleum gases. Gas supply line should run directly from the meter or fuel tank. Pipe sizing tables are provided based on gas flow (cu. ft. per hour) and pipe length. A sediment trap is required.
  • Multi-Zoning: Supports pump zoning systems (using R845A relay) and zone valve systems (using V8043E/F zone valves).
  • Indirect Water Heater Integration: The manual provides wiring diagrams and instructions for integrating an indirect water heater, including DHW priority settings.
  • Piping Arrangement: Detailed diagrams for typical piping arrangements, including air control systems, pressure relief valves, expansion tanks, and circulator locations.
  • Initial Start-up: Includes safety information and step-by-step instructions for lighting the boiler, checking for gas leaks, setting the thermostat, and turning on electric power.
  • Burner Adjustment: Instructions for adjusting gas input rate (manifold pressure) and pilot flame. Natural gas manifold pressure is typically 3½" water column, propane is 9½" water column. Main burner flames should have blue bases and blue-to-orange tips. Pilot flame should envelope 3/8" to 1/2" of the sensor tip.
  • Safety Checks: Includes tests for high limit control, gas control safety shutdown, and air flow pressure switch.
  • Vent Termination: Specific clearances and location restrictions for horizontal and vertical vent terminations to prevent hazards from flue gases and condensation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspections:
    • Venting System: Monthly inspection for condensation, corrosion, physical damage, water stains, rust, or separation of flue tubing/fittings. Annual professional service is recommended.
    • Condensation Drain and Trap: Periodic inspection for deterioration, plugging, or excessive sediment. Must be filled with water before boiler operation.
    • Boiler Area: Keep clear of combustible materials, gasoline, and flammable vapors.
  • Annual Inspection and Cleaning (by competent serviceperson):
    • Flue Passage Cleaning: Involves removing the control box, jacket top, inducer assembly, and flue collector to clean flue passages with a wire brush.
    • Burner Cleaning: If surfaces are dirty or flames are uneven, burners should be removed and cleaned.
    • Re-check and Re-adjust: Gas input rate, main flame characteristics, and pilot burner flame.
    • Lubrication: Annually lubricate the inducer motor with Anderol 465 or SAE 20 motor oil (4-6 drops in each oil hole). Lubricate circulator per manufacturer's instructions.
  • Heating Season Inspections:
    • Water Pressure: Regularly check and add water as needed. Frequent water loss may indicate leaks or a faulty air control system/fill valve.
    • Venting System: Re-check as per regular inspection.
    • Condensation Drain Trap: Check for fullness and tubing deterioration.
  • Water Treatment: A good water treatment program is recommended to extend boiler life and prevent repairs. Consultation with a reputable water treatment company is advised.
  • Anti-freeze: If used, inhibited propylene glycol is recommended for hydronic heating systems to protect against freeze-up.
  • Replacement Parts: Refer to boiler model and serial number on the rating plate. Contact Slant/Fin boiler distributor for parts. Only simple, easily-identified controls and parts may be obtained locally; other controls must be identified and ordered from Slant/Fin. Relief/Safety valves must be ASME rated.
