Common Problems & Solutions
The basic factors that contribute to creating quality imprints are: Temperature, Pressure and Dwell
time. The following section offers solutions to most of the problems encountered in hot stamping.
PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS
A) No Impression at All
Machine is still cold Allow more time for the machine to heat up
Foil is loaded upside down The foil should always be shiny side
up.
Type Holder is obstructed Re-adjust the attachment(s)
Machine handle not pressed down Press down harder on the Handle
completely
B) Faint or Weak Impressions
Temperature is too low. Set higher temperature.
Allow more time for the type to heat up.
Insufficient pressure or dwell time. Press Handle slightly harder or a little longer.
Not enough foil pull Adjust the Foil Rack.
Inappropriate foil The foil you are using may be inappropriate for
the material being marked. Refer to the section
in this manual on proper foil selection.
Some foil releases at different temperature than
others. Be sure to get the temperature just right
for the foil you are using.
Some foil requires a shorter dwell time than
others, especially when using fine line type.
Brilliant colors imprint clearer than pigment on
soft papers, napkins, etc.
C) Smeary Impressions (plugged up letters)
Too much heat. Reduce temperature.
Too much pressure or dwell time. Go easier on the Handle.
* Sometimes blurred impressions may be
brushed clean with a soft cloth.
D) Uneven or Spotty Impressions
Type Holder is not hot enough. Allow more time for Type Holder to heat up
evenly.
Type in Type Holder is not level. Loosen the screws on the Type Holder and tap
gently until type rest evenly against the bottom
of the type holder. Tighten screws again.
