Do you have a question about the Smeg SI5642D and is the answer not in the manual?
This document describes an induction hob, focusing on its functions, usage, and maintenance.
The induction hob is designed for cooking food in a home environment. It utilizes induction technology, where each cooking zone is equipped with an induction generator located under the glass-ceramic surface. This generator creates an electromagnetic field that induces a thermal current directly in the base of the pan, meaning heat is generated within the pan itself rather than being transmitted from the hob. This method offers several advantages, including energy saving due to direct energy transmission to the pan, improved safety as energy is only transmitted to the pan, high energy transfer efficiency, and rapid heating. The cooking surface itself only heats under the base of the pan, reducing the risk of burns and preventing spilled foods from sticking.
The hob features a power control module that optimizes and limits energy consumption. If the total set power levels exceed the maximum allowed limits, the electronic circuit board automatically adjusts the power supplied to the hot plates. Priority is given to the last zone set, and the module aims to maintain the maximum deliverable power levels.
The hob also includes a minute minder timer, which allows users to set a countdown (from 1 to 99 minutes) that sounds a buzzer when complete. This timer does not switch off the cooking zones but serves as an alert. Additionally, there's a cooking zone automatic switch-off timer, which can be programmed to automatically switch off each cooking zone after a set period (from 1 to 99 minutes).
For safety, the hob incorporates a control lock function to prevent accidental activation or changes to settings. This is particularly useful in households with children or pets.
Before first use, it's recommended to remove any protective films and labels (except the technical data plate). To ensure proper functioning of the electronic circuits and control keypad, place a pan full of water on each front cooking zone and switch them to maximum power for at least 30 minutes. Repeat this for rear and central cooking zones. If controls still don't work, extend the operation until moisture evaporates.
The hob is controlled via Touch Control sensor keys on the front panel. A light touch on a symbol will be confirmed by a buzzer sound. The main On/Off key activates the hob when pressed for at least 1 second and deactivates it when pressed for at least 2 seconds. If no power value is selected within a few seconds, the hob automatically deactivates.
To switch on a cooking zone, select the desired zone using its dedicated key, then use the '+' and '-' keys to adjust the power level from 1 to 9. The hob also offers a "Power Function" (booster function) for maximum power. This function is available for 10 minutes on the front left and rear right cooking zones, after which the power level automatically drops to 9.
The hob has an automatic device that limits the duration of use. If cooking zone settings are not changed, the maximum duration of operation depends on the selected power level. When this limit is reached, the cooking zone turns off, an alert sounds, and 'H' (for hot) appears on the display if the zone is still warm.
Cookware suitable for induction cooking must be made of metal with magnetic properties and a sufficiently large, flat base. Examples include enamelled steel, cast iron with an enamelled base, and multilayer stainless steel with a special base. Unsuitable materials include copper, stainless steel, aluminium, fireproof glass, wood, ceramic, and terracotta. A magnet can be used to test suitability.
Energy-saving advice includes matching pan diameter to the cooking zone, checking pan base diameter when purchasing, using a pressure cooker for long cooking times, ensuring enough liquid in pressure cookers, covering pans with lids, and choosing appropriately sized pans for the food quantity.
Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the appliance's aesthetic and functional qualities. Surfaces should be cleaned regularly after use, once they have cooled down.
For ordinary weekly cleaning, use a standard glass cleaning product, following the manufacturer's instructions. These products often create a protective, water-repellent membrane that resists dirt. After cleaning, dry the surface with a clean cloth, ensuring no detergent residue remains, as it could cause corrosive reactions when heated.
For food stains or residues, smudges from aluminium-based pans can be cleaned with a vinegar-dampened cloth. Burnt-on residue should be removed after cooking, then rinsed and dried thoroughly. Any dirt that falls on the hob while cleaning vegetables should be removed immediately to prevent scratching when moving pans.
Changes in color on the glass do not affect operation or stability; these are typically carbonized residues. Shiny surfaces can form due to pan bases (especially aluminium) rubbing on the surface or from unsuitable detergents. These may be difficult to remove and might require repeated cleaning. Corrosive detergents or rubbing can also wear away the hob's decoration over time.
In case of issues:
The appliance must never be cleaned by unsupervised children. A key lock function is available for safety when children or pets are near the hob. After use, cooking zones remain hot for a period, so avoid touching them until the residual heat indicator lights are off. Do not use steam jets for cleaning, and avoid abrasive or corrosive detergents on glass or metallic parts. Use wooden or plastic utensils.
