Overview

This document describes the Smeg ST4523IN dishwasher, providing details on its function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Smeg ST4523IN is a dishwasher designed for household and similar applications, including farmhouses, staff kitchen areas in shops and offices, and residential environments like hotels and bed & breakfasts. It is intended to wash crockery, cutlery, pots, and pans. The appliance features a water softener system to remove minerals from the water supply, which helps improve washing results and protect the appliance. It also includes a rinse aid dispenser to aid in drying and prevent streaks.

The dishwasher offers various programmes tailored to different load types and soil levels, including:

  • Express 50°: A short programme for fresh and light soil.
  • Soak: For rinsing off food remains and preventing odours, without detergent.
  • Full Express 60': For fresh and lightly dried-on soil.
  • Mix 60°: For normally soiled items, including a drying phase.
  • Intense 60°: For heavily soiled items, including a drying phase.
  • ECO (Eco): The standard programme for test institutes, offering the most efficient use of energy and water for normal soil.
  • AUTO (Auto): This programme automatically adjusts the wash cycle based on the type of load, sensing the degree of soil and amount of dishes to optimize temperature, water quantity, and wash duration.
  • Self Clean: A dedicated programme for cleaning the appliance interior, removing limescale and grease buildup.

The appliance incorporates an "Active Light" feature, which projects a light onto the floor below the door: red when a programme starts and during operation, green when completed, and flashing red for malfunctions.

Usage Features

Control Panel: The control panel includes an On/Off / Reset button, Delay start button, Display, Programme buttons, Option buttons, and an AUTO programme button. The display shows indicators for rinse aid, salt, Self Clean, and drying phase, along with a time indicator.

Basic Settings: Users can configure various settings:

  • Water hardness: Adjustable from level 1L to 10L to match local water hardness, with a factory setting of 5L.
  • Rinse aid level: Adjustable from level 0A to 8A, factory setting 5A. Setting to 0A deactivates the dispenser and indicator.
  • End sound: Activates or deactivates the acoustic signal for programme completion (factory setting: 0b - off).
  • Auto door open (Dry Assist): Activates or deactivates the automatic door opening during the drying phase (factory setting: 1o - on).
  • Key tones: Activates or deactivates the sound of buttons when pressed (factory setting: 1F - on).
  • Latest programme selection: Enables or disables automatic selection of the most recently used programme and options (factory setting: 0H - off).

Programmes and Options:

  • Programme Selection: Programmes are selected using dedicated buttons. The display shows the programme duration.
  • Options:
    • Extreme: Improves dishwashing results by increasing wash temperature and duration.
    • Crystal: Protects delicate loads by preventing rapid temperature changes and reducing the wash temperature to 45 °C.
    • Options must typically be activated before each programme start, unless "Latest programme selection" is enabled. Activating options may increase water and energy consumption and programme duration.
  • Delay Start: Allows delaying the programme start from 1 to 24 hours.
  • Auto Off Function: Saves energy by automatically switching off the appliance upon programme completion or after 5 minutes of inactivity if a programme was not started.
  • Dry Assist: Automatically opens the appliance door during the drying phase to improve drying results. Users are advised not to close the door within 2 minutes of automatic opening to prevent damage.

Loading the Baskets:

  • Always use the full capacity of the baskets.
  • Load hollow items (cups, glasses, pans) with openings facing downwards.
  • Ensure items do not touch each other to allow water to reach all surfaces.
  • Place light or plastic items in the upper basket, ensuring they do not move freely.
  • Cutlery and small items should be placed in the cutlery drawer.
  • Ensure spray arms can move freely before starting a programme.

Detergent, Salt, and Rinse Aid:

  • Only use detergents, salt, and rinse aid specifically designed for dishwashers.
  • For hard water areas, separate detergent (powder/gel/tablets without additional agents), rinse aid, and salt are recommended for optimal results.
  • Detergent tablets may not fully dissolve in short programmes.
  • The correct quantity of detergent and rinse aid should be used based on water hardness and manufacturer instructions. Insufficient amounts lead to poor cleaning/drying, while excessive amounts can cause residues or bluish layers.
  • The salt container should be refilled when the salt indicator is on. For first use, add 1 litre of water before filling with 1 kg of salt.
  • The rinse aid dispenser should be refilled when the rinse aid indicator is on. Fill until the liquid reaches the "FILL" mark.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Before any maintenance (other than Self Clean), deactivate the appliance and disconnect it from the mains.
  • Regularly check and clean filters and spray arms, as dirty components negatively affect washing results.
  • Wipe the door, including the rubber gasket, weekly with a soft damp cloth.
  • Use a cleaning product designed for dishwashers every two months to maintain performance.

Self Clean Programme:

  • Designed to clean the appliance interior and remove limescale and grease.
  • The Self Clean indicator illuminates when cleaning is needed.
  • Before starting, clean filters and spray arms. Use a descaler or cleaning product specifically for dishwashers, without dishes in the baskets.

External Cleaning:

  • Clean with a moist soft cloth and neutral detergents.
  • Avoid abrasive products, cleaning pads, or solvents.

Filter System Cleaning: The filter system consists of three parts.

  1. Turn filter (B) counterclockwise and remove it.
  2. Remove filter (C) from filter (B).
  3. Remove the flat filter (A).
  4. Wash all filters under running water.
  5. Ensure no food residues or soil remain around the sump edge.
  6. Reinstall flat filter (A) correctly under its guides.
  7. Reassemble filters (B) and (C).
  8. Place filter (B) back into flat filter (A) and turn clockwise until it locks. Incorrect filter positioning can cause bad washing results and damage.

Spray Arm Cleaning:

  • Lower Spray Arm: Pull upwards to remove. Wash under running water, using a thin pointed tool (e.g., toothpick) to clear clogged holes. Press downwards to reinstall.
  • Upper Spray Arms: Pull out the upper basket. Turn the mounting element clockwise to detach the spray arm from the duct. Wash under running water, using a thin pointed tool to clear clogged holes. To reinstall, insert the mounting element into the spray arm and fix it in the duct by turning it counterclockwise until it locks.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive table of problems, alarm codes (e.g., i10, i20, i30, i41-i44, i51-i59, i5A-i5F, i61, i69, iC0, iC3, iF1), and possible causes with solutions. Most issues can be resolved without contacting an Authorised Service Centre. Users are warned against improper repairs and advised to unplug the appliance if a problem persists after basic troubleshooting.
