This document is a Quick Start Guide for the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system, specifically models CUH-1002A and CUH-1003A. It provides instructions on setting up and using the PS4™ system, its DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller, and basic functionalities like playing games and managing settings.
The PlayStation®4 is a home video game console designed for playing games, accessing online content, and multimedia entertainment. It connects to a television via an HDMI cable and can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. The system uses a DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller for interaction, which can be charged and registered (paired) with the console. The PS4™ also supports various online services through the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN), including the PlayStation®Store for downloading content, and features for sharing gaming experiences like uploading screenshots, video clips, and broadcasting gameplay. Parental control settings are available to restrict access to content based on age ratings.
To get started, the PS4™ system needs to be connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. The guide illustrates connecting the AC power cord to the "AC IN" connector and an electricity supply, and the HDMI cable from the "HDMI OUT" port to the TV's "HDMI input port." Once connected, the TV channel should be changed to HDMI. The PS4™ system is turned on by touching the power button on the front view. The power indicator will blink blue before turning white when the system is on. If there's no picture, the guide suggests turning the system off by holding the power button for 7 seconds (until two beeps) and then turning it back on.
The DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller is connected to the PS4™ system using a USB cable. After connecting, pressing the PS button on the controller registers (pairs) it with the system, allowing for wireless use. Pairing is necessary for first-time use or when using the controller with a different PS4™ system.
The PS4™ system can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable (sold separately). If a Wi-Fi connection is preferred, no LAN cable should be connected. The guide recommends connecting the system to the internet to get the most out of it.
After initial setup, users are prompted to select settings, including an Internet connection, date, and time. On-screen instructions guide users through these adjustments. A system software update will be downloaded automatically once an Internet connection is established. Settings can be changed later via the (Settings) or [Profile] options in the function screen.
The PS4™ system includes parental control features to restrict access to content based on age ratings. These settings can be found in (Settings) > [Parental Controls] > [Restrict Use of PS4 Features] > [Application]. Tables are provided to guide users on how Parental Control Settings relate to different age groups in Europe, Africa, India, Australia, and New Zealand. Access to Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD video content, as well as the Internet Browser, can also be restricted. Users are advised to monitor their child's activity regardless of settings.
The PS4™ interface includes a "Function screen" and a "Home screen."
To play a game, a disc is inserted into the front of the PS4™ system. The game will then appear in the content area of the home screen, from where it can be selected to start playing.
The PlayStation®Store offers downloadable content, including games, add-ons, and demos. Users can even start playing games before they finish downloading. To use the PlayStation®Store, a Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) account and an Internet connection are required. Terms, country, and language restrictions apply, and users are responsible for internet service fees. Age restrictions apply, with users under 18 requiring parental consent.
The PS4™ system allows users to upload screenshots and video clips of gameplay, and broadcast (stream) their gameplay using online services. These features require an SEN master account and an Internet connection.
A mono headset can be connected to the controller for in-game voice chat. The guide shows connecting the stereo headset jack to the controller.
An SEN account is required to use PSNS™ and SEN services like PlayStation®Store and Music Unlimited. Accounts can be created for free, require an Internet connection and the latest system software. Up to 16 accounts can be registered on each PS4™ system. Master accounts are needed to create sub-accounts for users under a certain age. Existing PlayStation®3, PlayStation®Vita, or computer accounts can also be used.
Once an Internet connection is set up, system software updates will be downloaded automatically. Future updates will also be downloaded automatically.
The User's Guide provides comprehensive information on PS4™ system functionalities, including adjusting settings, charging the controller, and using each function. It can be accessed via (Settings) > (User's Guide) from the function screen or online at eu.playstation.com/help/ps4/manuals/. An Internet connection is required to view the online User's Guide.
The Safety Guide contains important information on how to safely use the PS4™ system and its specifications. Users are advised to read it before using the system.
Users are cautioned against disconnecting the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking, as this can lead to data loss, corruption, or system damage. The AC power cord should only be disconnected once the power is completely turned off.
