Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Sony STR-VX10L and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Sony STR-VX10L is an FM Stereo/FM-AM Receiver designed for high-fidelity audio reproduction. This receiver incorporates a PLL quartz-locked digital synthesizer system for precise tuning and a low-noise NF type equalizer amplifier in its preamplifier section, ensuring clear and accurate sound. The power amplifier section utilizes a quasi-complementary SEPP design.

Function Description:

The STR-VX10L serves as the central hub for an audio system, allowing users to tune into FM and AM radio broadcasts, connect various audio sources like record players, tape recorders, and other auxiliary devices, and drive two pairs of speaker systems (A and B). It features controls for volume, balance, bass, treble, and loudness, enabling users to tailor the sound to their preferences and listening environment. The receiver also includes a TAPE MONITOR switch for monitoring taped programs.

Usage Features:

  • Direct Access Tuning: Allows users to directly input the desired frequency using numerical buttons.
  • Automatic Tuning (FM reception): Scans frequencies in 0.05 MHz steps for automatic station finding.
  • Memory Preset Tuning: Up to eight FM or MW/LW stations can be memorized for quick recall. The "0" indicator on the display blinks when the memory circuit is ready for storing data.
  • Function/Frequency Display: A clear display shows the frequency being received, the preset tuning button number, and the program in use (e.g., PHONO).
  • Station Index Windows: Provided for placing station labels to identify memorized stations.
  • FM Mode Switch: Allows switching between stereo and mono reception, useful for weak or noisy FM stations.
  • LOUDNESS Switch: Compensates for the human ear's decreased response to very low and high frequencies at low volume levels, providing a more uniform sound.
  • TAPE MONITOR Switch: Enables listening to a taped program from a connected tape recorder.
  • Speaker System Selection: Supports two pairs of speakers (A and B), which can be selected individually or simultaneously.
  • Headphones Jack: For private listening with stereo headphones.
  • AC Outlets: Two switched outlets (total 100 watts) are available for connecting other audio components, controlled by the receiver's POWER switch.
  • Memory of Last Received Station: The receiver remembers the last station received for more than one second before power-off, automatically tuning to it when powered on again. This feature is useful for timer-activated recording.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Installation for Memory Back-up: Two AA-size batteries (Sony SUM-3(NS) New Super Batteries recommended) are installed in a compartment at the rear to retain memorized frequencies when the receiver is turned off. Battery life is approximately one year.
  • Battery Replacement Procedure: Users are instructed to turn on the receiver before installing or replacing batteries to avoid incorrect figures on the display. If incorrect figures appear, a specific procedure involving leaving the unit off, turning it on, installing batteries, and re-memorizing frequencies is provided.
  • Cleaning: The cabinet, front, and rear panels can be cleaned with a soft cloth lightly dampened with a mild detergent solution. Solvents like alcohol, benzine, or thinner should not be used.
  • Trouble Checks: A comprehensive list of common problems and their solutions is provided, covering issues like no audio, flickering stereo indicator, incorrect tuning, hum or noise, and rustling noise. This includes checking connections, adjusting controls, and ensuring proper antenna setup.
  • Antenna Installation Guidelines: Detailed instructions for connecting 75-ohm coaxial cable and 300-ohm twinlead FM antennas, as well as MW/LW antennas. Recommendations for optimal antenna placement and type (ribbon dipole, helical, multi-element) are given to minimize interference and maximize signal reception.
  • Ground Connection: Recommended for outdoor antennas to provide lightning protection and to prevent hum by connecting the ground terminal to a good earth ground.
