Overview

The SP61065 Battery Analyser with Built-In Printer is a sophisticated diagnostic tool designed for comprehensive battery and charging system testing in automotive and marine, trade, or commercial applications. It utilizes advanced conductance testing technology to provide quick, accurate, and reliable measurements of battery health and performance.

Function Description

The primary function of the SP61065 is to analyze the health status of vehicle starting batteries. It achieves this by measuring the actual Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) capability of the battery and comparing it against its rated (new) capacity. This analysis helps maintenance personnel quickly identify problems and determine the battery's condition, including its aging extent, and when replacement may be required to prevent in-service failure.

The device supports testing of all automotive cranking lead-acid batteries, including:

  • Ordinary lead-acid batteries
  • AGM flat plate batteries
  • AGM spiral batteries
  • Gel batteries
  • EFB batteries

Key functional capabilities include:

  • Battery Test: Assesses the battery's overall health, actual cold cranking capability, and state of charge. It can detect bad battery cells and provide a "Good Battery," "Good, Recharge," "Replace," "Bad Cell, Replace," or "Charge, then Retest" result.
  • Cranking Test (12V and 24V systems): Analyzes the starter motor's condition by measuring actual cranking current and cranking voltage. This helps determine if the starter motor is functioning correctly.
  • Charging Test (12V and 24V systems): Checks the vehicle's charging system, including alternator output and rectifier diode function. It confirms if the alternator's output voltage is correct, the rectifier is working, and the charge current is normal. The test includes "Unloaded Test," "Loaded Test," and "Ripple Test" phases.
  • Low Charge Testing: Can test batteries with a low charge, eliminating the need for a full charge before testing.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: Features automatic reverse polarity protection, ensuring that incorrect connections will not damage the tester, vehicle, or battery.
  • Multi-Language Support: Supports multiple languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch.
  • Built-in Printer: Allows for immediate printing of test results for record-keeping and customer reference.
  • Data Review: Stores historical test results for later review.
  • PC Connectivity: Can connect to a PC via USB to print test data using dedicated software.

Usage Features

The SP61065 is designed for ease of use with a clear menu-driven interface.

  • System Setup: Users can customize settings such as language, quick test mode (Fn Setup), contrast, time & date, and view tool information (software/hardware version).
  • Battery Type Selection: Before a battery test, the tester prompts the user to select the battery type (Regular Flooded, AGM Flat Plate, AGM Spiral, Gel, EFB) to ensure accurate results.
  • Rating Input: Users input the correct test standard and rating (e.g., CCA, BCI, CA) as marked on the battery.
  • Test Procedure Guidance: The device provides clear on-screen instructions for each test, such as "START ENGINE" for cranking tests or specific RPM and accessory usage for charging tests.
  • Result Interpretation: Test results are displayed with clear indicators like "GOOD BATTERY," "REPLACE," or "NORMAL" for charging voltage, along with numerical values for health, charge, internal resistance, and voltage.
  • Print Functionality: After any test, the user is prompted to print the results. The built-in printer provides a physical record of the diagnostic findings.
  • PC Printing: For more detailed record-keeping, test data can be transferred to a PC and printed using the provided PrintCOM software. This allows printing of individual test types (Battery, Cranking, Charging) or all data.
  • Voltage Explanation: The manual provides a clear explanation of battery voltage levels corresponding to different states of charge (e.g., 100% Charged = 12.60V or above).
  • Internal Resistance Explanation: The manual explains the significance of internal resistance (IR) as an indicator of battery capability, noting that lower IR generally signifies a healthier battery.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: The device should be kept dry, clean, and free from oil, water, and grease. A mild detergent on a clean cloth can be used for external cleaning.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a dry, dust-free environment.
  • Battery Terminal Preparation: Before testing, it is recommended to clean battery terminals with a wire brush and alkaline cleaner to prevent surface resistance from affecting test results.
  • In-Vehicle Testing Precautions: When testing an in-vehicle battery, ensure the ignition key is off, no power drains from other electronics, and car doors are closed to prevent interior lights from illuminating.
  • Connection Best Practices: Wiggle test clips on terminal posts a few times to ensure a good electrical connection with no resistance.
  • Battery Stabilization: After charging or turning off the engine, wait at least 10 minutes before testing to allow the battery charge to stabilize for the most accurate results.
  • Low Use Battery Management: For low-frequency use batteries, it is recommended to recharge them every 2 months to extend battery life. For accurate testing, cycle (charge and discharge) such batteries 3-5 times to restore chemical properties.
  • Disposal & Recycling: At the end of its life, the tool should be taken to a designated collection point for E-waste to ensure proper recycling and environmental protection.

The SP61065 is a robust and user-friendly tool designed to provide reliable battery and charging system diagnostics, making it an essential asset for automotive technicians and enthusiasts.
