Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Spalding Portable Basketball System. It provides detailed instructions for assembly, usage, and maintenance, along with important safety warnings and technical specifications.

Function Description:

The Spalding Portable Basketball System is designed for recreational basketball play. It features a height-adjustable backboard and a mobile base, allowing it to be moved and positioned as needed. The system is intended for adult assembly and use, with specific warnings against misuse or improper setup.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Height Adjustment: The system features an "Exacta Height Assembly" (Part No. 701292) that allows the backboard height to be adjusted. The minimum operational height to the bottom of the backboard is 6'-6" (1.98m).
  • Base Filling: The base (Part No. 600335) must be filled completely with approximately 34 gallons (128 Liters) of water or 300 lbs. (136 kg) of sand for stability.
  • Pole Overlap: When pole sections are properly pounded together, there should be a 3-1/2" (8.9 cm) overlap between sections.
  • Wheel Size: The system includes 4-inch wheels (Part No. 266200) for portability.
  • Hardware: The manual provides a comprehensive parts list with item numbers, quantities, part numbers, and descriptions for all components, including various bolts, nuts, washers, spacers, and brackets. Key hardware includes:
    • Hex Flange Nuts (5/16-18, 1/2-13)
    • Hex Head Bolts (5/16-18, 3/8-16, 1/2-13)
    • Carriage Bolts (5/16-18)
    • Nylon Insert Lock Nuts (3/8-16)
    • Flat Washers (1/4", 5/16", 3/4", 1.5" O.D.)
    • Plastic and Metal Spacers
    • Locking Pin and Lanyard
    • Counter Balance Spring (Part No. 204838)
  • Materials: The system includes steel poles, a backboard (acrylic, requiring protective film removal before assembly), and a plastic base.

Usage Features:

  • Height Adjustment: To adjust the backboard height, the user must hold the handle, remove a pin, move the elevator up or down to the desired height, and then replace the pin to lock it. Two capable adults are recommended for this task.
  • Mobility: To move the system, the backboard height should first be adjusted to its lowest position. While holding the pole, the system is rotated forward until the wheels engage with the ground. It can then be moved to the desired location, carefully rotated upright, and checked for stability.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes numerous safety warnings, including:
    • "READ AND UNDERSTAND OPERATOR'S MANUAL BEFORE USING THIS UNIT."
    • "FAILURE TO FOLLOW OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY."
    • "DO NOT hang on the rim or any part of the system."
    • "DO NOT slide, climb, shake, or play on base and/or pole."
    • "DO NOT add ballast on top of base (such as sand bags or cinder blocks)."
    • "Keep hands and fingers away from moving parts when adjusting height or moving system."
    • "DO NOT allow children to move or adjust system."
    • "DO NOT wear jewelry during play."
    • "Surface beneath the base must be smooth and free of gravel or other sharp objects."
    • "DO NOT use or leave system upright during windy and/or adverse weather conditions."
    • "USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN INSTALLING SPRINGS."
    • "TWO PEOPLE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROCEDURE."
    • "DO NOT LEAVE ASSEMBLY UNATTENDED WHEN EMPTY; IT MAY TIP OVER."
  • Assembly Requirements: Adult assembly is required. The manual stresses the importance of reading all instructions, identifying parts, and ensuring proper and complete assembly for safe operation. Failure to follow instructions could result in serious injury and/or void the warranty.
  • Tools Required for Assembly:
    • 2 Capable Adults
    • Tape Measure
    • Wood Board (scrap)
    • Sawhorse or Support Table
    • Hammer/Mallet
    • Safety Glasses
    • Step Ladder - 8ft. (2.4 m)
    • Phillips-Head Screwdriver
    • (2 each) Wrenches and/or Socket Wrenches and Sockets (Deep-Well Sockets are Recommended) in sizes 1/2", 9/16", and 3/4". An extension is recommended for sockets.
    • Optional tools include large and small adjustable wrenches.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: "As with all products, periodically inspect for loose small parts."
  • Base Filling: "Assembled unit MUST be filled with sand or water at ALL times."
  • Corrosion Check: "CHECK pole system for signs of corrosion (rust, pitting, chipping) and repaint with exterior enamel paint. If rust has penetrated through the steel anywhere, replace pole immediately."
  • Pre-use Check: "CHECK system before each use for proper ballast, loose hardware, excessive wear, and signs of corrosion; replace or repair before use."
  • Stability Check: "CHECK system before each use for instability."
  • Pole Cap: "Keep pole top covered with cap at all times. Water and debris entering pole through uncapped top can cause corrosion from the inside."
  • Base Surface: "Surface beneath the base must be smooth and free of gravel or other sharp objects. Punctures or cracks in base could result, causing leakage which could cause system to tip over."
  • Winterization: "Do not allow water in tank to freeze. During sub-freezing weather add at least 2 gallons of non-toxic antifreeze or sand, or empty tank completely and store. (Do not use salt)."
  • Leakage Check: "Check base regularly for leakage. Slow leaks could cause the system to tip over unexpectedly."
  • Customer Service: A toll-free customer service number is provided for the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia for questions or missing parts. Email contact is also available.
