Overview

This document outlines the operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines for the Spear & Jackson 32cm 1200W Rotary Electric Lawnmower, model S1232ER. Designed for domestic use, this electric lawnmower is suitable for maintaining lawns in domestic and hobby gardens. It is not intended for commercial, trade, or industrial applications, nor for use in wet weather conditions, or for mowing unusually high grass, pasture grass, or shredding leaves. Any use deviating from its intended purpose will invalidate the warranty.

Function Description

The Spear & Jackson S1232ER is a rotary electric lawnmower designed to cut grass using a rotating blade. It operates on a 230-240V~, 50Hz power supply and features a 1200W motor. The lawnmower is equipped with a grass bag to collect clippings, ensuring a tidy finish. A full grass indicator on the grass bag provides a visual cue when it needs emptying. The cutting height can be adjusted to five different positions, ranging from 20mm to 60mm, allowing users to tailor the cut to their lawn's needs and desired length. The machine is designed with a switch box and switch bar for easy operation, and a hardwired cable for connection to the mains supply.

Usage Features

Before operating the lawnmower, users must ensure they have read and understood the entire instruction manual, paying close attention to safety information. Assembly involves fixing the lower handle to the deck with screws, attaching the upper handle using wing nuts, and securing the cable with cable clips. The grass bag handle needs to be inserted into the upper cover, and the metal frame placed inside the bag, ensuring clips are fully secured. Finally, the rear flap is lifted to hang the collection bag on the mower.

For safe operation, it is crucial to inspect the work area and remove any objects that could be thrown by the machine. Users should wear substantial footwear, long trousers, hearing protection, eye protection, and protective gloves. The machine should not be used when barefoot or wearing open sandals, or with loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts. Children, pets, and bystanders should be kept away from the operating area.

To start the lawnmower, press the button on the switch box and pull the switch bar towards the handle, holding it in position. To switch off, simply release the switch bar. The blades will continue to rotate for a few seconds after the motor is switched off, so caution is advised.

Mowing tips include verifying the lawn is free of debris that could damage the mower. When cutting thick grass, a slower walking speed is recommended for an effective cut and proper discharge of clippings. It is advised not to cut more than one-third of the grass's total length for a healthy lawn. For example, if the grass is 6cm long, it should not be cut shorter than 4cm. If the grass is higher, it should be cut gradually to the desired length to avoid damage. Wet grass should be avoided as it tends to stick to the underbody, hindering proper discharge.

The lawnmower is fitted with a motor thermal protection device that will shut down the motor if it or the blade becomes blocked or overheated. If this occurs, the user should release the switch lever, disconnect the extension lead, check and clean the cutting chassis for any blockages, and allow the machine to cool down in a cool environment for approximately 5 minutes before restarting.

When mowing, users should follow the arrow direction to avoid twisting or cutting the power cord. The grass bag full indicator will open when the bag is empty or not full, and close when it is full, signaling that it needs to be emptied.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safe and efficient operation of the lawnmower. Before any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning, the product must be switched off, disconnected from the power supply, and allowed to cool down.

The underbody and cutting blade should be kept clean and free of debris, with clippings removed from the discharge chute. All nuts and bolts should be periodically checked for tightness. After prolonged use, especially in sandy soil conditions, the cutting blade may wear and lose its original shape, reducing cutting efficiency. In such cases, the blade should be replaced. Lubricating the cutting blade with light machine oil after each use will prolong its lifespan and the product's overall durability.

Replacing the cutting blade involves loosening the bolt anti-clockwise with a suitable wrench and removing the old blade. A new blade of the same type should then be reattached onto the spindle, ensuring correct alignment. The bolt should be tightened clockwise with 18 Nm min, 22 Nm max to ensure safe operation. The cutting device should be replaced after 50 hours of mowing or 2 years, whichever comes sooner, regardless of condition. If the cutting device is cracked or damaged, it must be replaced immediately.

The power cord, if damaged, must be replaced by the manufacturer or an authorized service center. Users should never attempt to repair the power cord themselves.

For storage, the product should be switched off and disconnected from the power supply. It should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth, taking care as the blades are sharp, and protective gloves should be worn during cleaning. The machine should always be allowed to cool down before storing.

During transportation, the product must be switched off and disconnected from the power supply. It should be protected from heavy impact or strong vibrations and secured to prevent it from slipping or falling over in vehicles.

The manual emphasizes that this product does not contain any parts that can be repaired by the consumer. Any repair work, beyond the basic maintenance described, must be performed by an authorized service center or a similarly qualified specialist to avoid danger and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Only genuine replacement parts and accessories made for this machine by the manufacturer should be used.
