The K-FORCE® 18 MINI LIGHT BAR, manufactured by SpeedTech Lights, Inc., is a professional-grade emergency warning device designed to alert pedestrians and other operators to the presence of personnel, emergency vehicles, or an emergency site. This light bar is intended for strict use by authorized personnel only, who are responsible for understanding and obeying all applicable laws and regulations regarding emergency warning devices.
The K-FORCE® 18 MINI LIGHT BAR provides visual warning signals through its LED diodes and modules, offering a variety of flash patterns to suit different warning needs. The device is equipped with non-volatile memory, which ensures that the last selected flash pattern is recalled when the light bar is turned on. This feature allows for consistent operation without the need to re-select the desired pattern each time the device is activated. The light bar can be controlled via a cigarette lighter plug switch (sold separately), which includes an on/off switch and a flash pattern button. The on/off switch directly controls the power to the light bar, while the flash pattern button allows the user to cycle through the available patterns. Additionally, the flash pattern button offers shortcuts for specific modes: holding it for 3 seconds toggles Steady Burn mode, and holding it for 5 seconds toggles Random pattern mode. For installations where the cigarette lighter plug is not used, the flash pattern wire can be manually identified and used to cycle through patterns according to the provided wiring diagram.
The K-FORCE® 18 MINI LIGHT BAR offers versatile mounting options to accommodate various vehicle types and user preferences. It comes with pre-attached magnetic mounting brackets, which are adjustable along the length of the aluminum track. Users must ensure all four magnets are securely placed on a flat surface for proper attachment. For those requiring a more permanent or specific mounting solution, stud mounts and headache rack mounts are available separately.
When using stud mounts, the magnetic mounts are first removed, and the stud mounts are attached to the light bar using the existing screws. The main mounting bolt then passes through the stud mount, and the hardware is fully tightened to secure the light bar. It's important to note that not all bolts used for magnetic mounts will be used for stud mounts.
For headache rack mounts, the magnetic mounts are also removed. The headache rack bracket is then attached to the light bar using the two vertical cutaways on the bracket. This secures the headache rack mount to the light bar. The headache rack mount can then be directly mounted to the vehicle's headache rack. Alternatively, a supplied secondary piece can be used to "sandwich" the back rack with two user-supplied nuts and bolts, providing an even more secure attachment. As with stud mounts, not all bolts used for magnetic mounts will be used for headache rack mounts.
Proper installation is crucial for the effectiveness and safety of the K-FORCE® 18 MINI LIGHT BAR. Installers should have a good understanding of automotive electronic systems and procedures. It is essential to bench test all units prior to installation to ensure all features and parts are functional, including LED diode and module functionality, flash patterns, non-volatile memory, and to check for any physical damage.
When installing, never cut wires or work on the unit while it is connected to a power source. Avoid installing the product or routing wires through or in the deployment area of airbags, as this can cause serious personal injury. If drilling is required, ensure no vehicle components are damaged, deburr all drilled holes, and install grommets in all wire passage holes. Grommets, cable ties, and looms should be used to anchor and protect all wiring. Fuses, properly sized and located as close to the power take-off points as possible, are critical for protecting the wiring and device. Only the fuse included by SpeedTech Lights should be used, and a fuse with a higher amp rating should never be substituted. Insulation displacement connectors are not to be used.
For optimal efficiency, a secure electrical connection to the battery's negative (-) post is required. Circuit breaks should not be used. If a control box or remote device is used, it must be installed in a location that allows safe operation by both the user and the vehicle in any driving condition. Equipment should never be activated or controlled in hazardous driving conditions. SXL type wire, compliant with SAE J-1128, should be used in the engine compartment where higher heat resistance is needed, and all wires should be protected from hot surfaces and moving parts.
To preserve the longevity and function of the K-FORCE® 18 MINI LIGHT BAR, certain maintenance practices are recommended. The light bar should never be taken through a car wash, including pressure washers, automatic car washes, or any car wash with brushes or chemicals that could scratch or damage the equipment. Instead, the light bar and its lenses should be cleaned with water and a soft cloth. Over time, clear lenses may experience yellowing, and replacement lenses can be purchased by contacting STL Customer Service.
Daily inspection and testing of the product are advised to ensure it operates properly and is correctly mounted. If any malfunction occurs, contacting STL Customer Service for troubleshooting or warranty claims is recommended. Instruction manuals should be stored in a safe place for future reference or can be found on the SpeedTech Lights website. Regular checks should be performed to ensure the visual and audible signals are not blocked by vehicle components, other obstructions, or people.
The effectiveness of the STL equipment relies heavily on correct mounting and wiring. Improper wiring and mounting can reduce output and performance. Emergency warning devices often require high electrical voltages and/or currents, so caution must be exercised around live electrical connections to prevent personal injury or vehicle damage. Electromagnetic interference can be mitigated by mounting light bars a minimum of 12" - 34" from the radio antenna and by not powering equipment from the same circuit or sharing the same grounding circuit with radio communication equipment. After installation, all vehicle equipment should be tested together to ensure interference-free operation.
Considering driver and passenger airbags (SRS) is vital for equipment mounting. Any equipment in the airbag deployment area can damage or dislodge the airbags and sensors, reducing their effectiveness. Installers must ensure that the light bar, along with any parts, hardware, wiring, power supplies, and switch boxes, do not interfere with airbags, SRS wiring, or sensors. All STL equipment must be securely attached to a part of the vehicle strong enough to withstand the forces applied by the equipment, adhering to vehicle manufacturer instructions. Mounting units on the exterior of the vehicle should be permanent to avoid dislodging under aggressive driving conditions. Interior mounting by methods other than permanent attachment is discouraged due to the risk of detachment during sudden braking, collision, or swerving.
