Overview

The SpeedyBee F405 V3 BLS 50A 30x30 Stack is a comprehensive flight control system designed for drones, integrating a flight controller (FC) and an electronic speed controller (ESC) into a compact stackable unit. This manual, version V1.0, provides detailed information on its specifications, connections, configuration, and maintenance.

Function Description

The SpeedyBee F405 V3 BLS 50A 30x30 Stack serves as the central brain and power distribution unit for a drone. The Flight Controller (FC), the SpeedyBee F405 V3, processes flight commands, stabilizes the drone, and manages various peripherals. It runs on BetaFlight, EmuFlight, or INAV firmware, offering extensive customization and control options. The Electronic Speed Controller (ESC), the SpeedyBee BLS 50A 4-in-1 ESC, is responsible for converting the FC's commands into motor speed adjustments, driving up to four motors simultaneously. The "4-in-1" designation means it integrates four individual ESCs onto a single board, simplifying wiring and reducing weight. The stack design allows for a compact and organized build, crucial for drone applications where space and weight are at a premium.

Usage Features

Connectivity:

The FC and ESC are connected via an 8-pin cable (included) or by direct soldering 8 wires to the designated pads. This modular approach offers flexibility in assembly. The FC supports a wide range of peripherals including FPV cameras, a second 4-in-1 ESC, receivers (PPM, SBUS, Crossfire Nano Rx), extra PWM outputs, GPS & Compass modules, Betaflight LEDs, VTX (Analog/DJI), and buzzers. It also features a dedicated DJI Air Unit Connector for seamless integration with DJI FPV systems.

Bluetooth Functionality:

The SpeedyBee F405 V3 FC includes a Bluetooth chip, enabling wireless configuration of both the FC and ESC parameters via the SpeedyBee mobile app. This eliminates the need for a PC connection for many common adjustments, offering convenience in the field.

LED Indicators:

The FC features several LED indicators:

  • RED LED: Solid Red indicates power.
  • GREEN LED: Solid Green indicates Bluetooth connection status.
  • BLUE LED: Flight controller status light, controlled by the FC firmware.
  • Orange LED: LED Control Mode Indicator. Solid Orange indicates the 4 sets of LED strips (connected to LED1-LED4 pads) are in SB_LED mode, allowing cycling through display modes by pressing the BOOT button. OFF indicates control by Betaflight firmware. Long pressing the BOOT button for 3 seconds switches between BF_LED mode and SB_LED mode.

BOOT Button Functionality:

The BOOT button serves two primary purposes:

  1. Firmware Re-flashing (DFU mode): If the FC is bricked, holding the BOOT button while connecting to a PC via USB-C cable forces it into DFU mode, allowing firmware re-flashing using Betaflight/Emuflight/INAV configurator.
  2. LED Control: When the FC is powered on and in standby mode, short-pressing the BOOT button cycles through LED display modes for the LED strips connected to LED1-LED4 pads. Long-pressing switches between SpeedyBee-LED mode and BF-LED mode.

Wireless Blackbox and FC Firmware Flashing:

It's important to note that wireless blackbox download & analysis and wireless FC firmware flashing are NOT supported by this stack. FC firmware updates must be performed via a PC connection.

ESC Configuration:

The ESC can be configured wirelessly using the SpeedyBee app or via a PC using the ESC Configurator software.

Package Options:

The product is available in three options:

  1. SpeedyBee F405 V3 50A 30x30 Stack: Includes both FC and ESC, along with all necessary cables, nuts, grommets, and a 35V 1500uF Low ESR Capacitor.
  2. SpeedyBee F405 V3 Flight Controller: FC only, with grommets and cables.
  3. SpeedyBee BLS 50A 4-in-1 ESC: ESC only, with capacitor, O-rings, power cable, and grommets.

Maintenance Features

Firmware Updates:

  • FC Firmware Update: The SpeedyBee F405 V3 flight controller does not support wireless firmware flashing. To update the FC firmware, connect the FC to a PC via a USB cable, open Betaflight/Emuflight/INAV configurator, navigate to the 'Firmware Flashing' page, select the target 'SPEEDYBEEF405V3', and flash.
  • ESC Firmware Update: It is recommended to use the ESC Configurator on a PC to update the ESC firmware. When updating, ensure to select 'JH-50' as the ESC type for either BLHeli_S or Bluejay firmware.

Voltage Spike Protection:

To prevent damage from voltage spikes during power-up, it is strongly recommended to use the included 35V 1500uF Low ESR Capacitor. This capacitor helps smooth out power delivery and protect the sensitive electronics.

Physical Protection:

The package includes M3 silicone O-rings, M38mm silicone grommets for the FC, and M38.1mm silicone grommets for the ESC. These components help absorb vibrations and protect the boards from physical stress during mounting and flight. The TVS diode on the ESC also provides protection against transient voltage spikes.

Troubleshooting:

The BOOT button serves as a critical tool for recovery if the flight controller becomes bricked, allowing users to force it into DFU mode for firmware re-flashing.

The SpeedyBee F405 V3 BLS 50A 30x30 Stack is designed for both ease of use and high performance, catering to drone enthusiasts and builders who require a reliable and feature-rich flight control system.
