This instruction sheet contains important information about the correct installation,
service and maintenance of your rear shock. Nevertheless please be informed that
special knowledge and tools are essential to install, service and maintain SR
SUNTOUR shocks. Common mechanical knowledge may not be sufficient to repair,
service or maintain a rear shock. Therefore we strongly recommend getting your
rear shock installed, serviced and/or maintained by a trained and qualified bike
mechanic. Improper installation, service or maintenance can result in failure of the
product, accident, injury or even death.

Overview

This document is an owner's manual for SR SUNTOUR rear shocks, providing comprehensive information on their installation, usage, maintenance, and safety. The manual covers various models including TRIAIR2, TRIAIR, EDGE-comp, EDGE, RAIDON, EDGE-RC, EDGE-plus, and RLR (Remote Lock-out).

Function Description:

SR SUNTOUR rear shocks are designed to provide suspension for bicycles, absorbing impacts and vibrations from the terrain to enhance rider comfort, control, and pedaling efficiency. They utilize an air spring system and hydraulic damping to manage suspension travel. Key functions include:

  • Air Spring: Uses compressed air to provide the main spring force, allowing for adjustable firmness based on rider weight and preference.
  • Damping: Controls the speed at which the shock compresses (compression damping) and extends (rebound damping).
  • Lockout: A feature that stiffens the shock to minimize suspension movement, ideal for climbing or smooth terrain, improving pedaling efficiency. Some models offer remote lockout for on-the-fly adjustment.
  • Air Volume Adjust: Allows for tuning the spring curve (progressiveness) of the air shock by adding or removing volume spacers.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific numerical specifications (like stroke lengths, eye-to-eye lengths, or weight) are not universally listed for all models, the manual highlights critical adjustable parameters:

  • Air Pressure: Adjustable in both the main body and reservoir (IFP) for models like Vorocoil, Triair2, and Triair. Factory settings range from 110 psi to 200 psi for the main body and 180 psi to 200 psi for the reservoir, with maximum pressures up to 300 psi. These pressures are crucial for setting the SAG correctly.
  • SAG (Static Sag): The amount the shock compresses under the rider's weight. Recommended SAG ranges are 20-35% of total shock travel, varying by stroke length (e.g., 18.75-26.25mm for 75mm travel, 6.00-7.50mm for 30mm travel).
  • Rebound Damping: Adjustable to control the extension speed of the shock. Turning clockwise slows rebound (more damping), and counter-clockwise speeds it up (less damping).
  • Compression Damping:
    • 3-step Low-Speed Compression (TRIAIR2, TRIAIR, EDGE-comp): Offers "Open" (maximum sensitivity), "Middle" (active with good pedaling platform), and "Close" (reduced suspension bob for climbing) settings.
    • 2-step Low-Speed Compression (TRIAIR2, EDGE-comp, EDGE-plus): Offers "Open" (maximum sensitivity) and "Close" (reduced suspension bob) settings.
    • Infinite Low-Speed Compression (EDGE-RC): Allows for continuous adjustment of compression damping to fine-tune sensitivity and bump absorption based on terrain (small/fast bumps vs. big bumps/square edge hits).
  • Lockout Levels: LOR models offer 100% lockout, while LOR8 and RLR8 models offer 80% lockout.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires matching "eye-to-eye length," stroke, and mounting hardware to the original shock. Emphasizes the importance of correct installation by a qualified mechanic to avoid geometry changes, loss of control, and serious injury.
  • Pre-Ride Checks: Before every ride, riders must inspect the bicycle and suspension for damage, check brake function, ensure quick release/through axle systems are tightened, verify cable routing, and confirm proper SAG and air pressure.
  • SAG Setting: A critical setup procedure involving pumping to suggested air pressure, compressing the shock to equalize air chambers, sitting on the bike in riding position, sliding the SAG indicator O-ring, and gently stepping off to measure. Adjustments are made by increasing air pressure to decrease SAG or decreasing air pressure to increase SAG.
  • Air Volume Adjustment: Volume spacers can be added to create a more progressive spring curve (prevent harsh bottom-outs) or removed for a more linear feel (easier to achieve full travel). The manual provides a troubleshooting table for common issues like "bottom out too easily," "lacking support for pedaling," "looking for more mid-stroke support," and "cannot get full travel."
  • Damping Adjustments:
    • Rebound: Adjusted via a knob to control the shock's extension speed.
    • Compression: Adjusted via a knob (3-step, 2-step, or infinite) to control the shock's compression speed, adapting to different trail conditions (rough DH, smooth DH, technical climb, sandy, muddy).
  • Lockout Operation: Engaged via a knob or remote lever to stiffen the shock for efficient pedaling on smooth terrain. The manual explicitly warns against using lockout in rough terrain or when heavy suspension is needed, as this can damage the shock and lead to accidents.

Maintenance Features:

SR SUNTOUR rear shocks are designed for relatively simple maintenance, but periodic servicing is crucial for performance and warranty.

  • After Every Ride (Maintenance 1):
    • Clean the exterior with mild soap and water, wipe dry with a soft towel.
    • Inspect the shock for visual damage (dents, scratches, discoloration, oil leaks).
    • Check the function of control knobs.
    • Check air pressure (normal for air shocks to lose pressure over time).
    • Check SAG and damper settings.
    • Check mounting hardware for proper torque settings.
  • Every 50 Hours (Maintenance 2 - Regularly, at dealer): Includes all Maintenance 1 checks.
  • Every 100 Hours or Annually (Maintenance 3 - Whichever comes first, at dealer):
    • Includes all Maintenance 1 and 2 checks.
    • Full shock service, including damper rebuild and air seal replacement.
  • General Maintenance Guidelines:
    • Never use a pressure washer or aggressive cleaners.
    • Regular servicing is recommended, especially in extreme weather.
    • If performance changes, consult a local dealer.
    • Critical Warning: The rear shock is filled with oil and nitrogen under pressure. Do not attempt to open the rear shock without specialized knowledge and tools, as this poses a high risk of serious injury, makes reassembly impossible, and voids the warranty. All internal service should be handled by a trained and qualified bike mechanic.
