1. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, a properly grounded
receptacle of grounding type must be installed and protected
by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and in accordance
with national electrical code and local codes.
2. Make certain that the receptacle is within the reach of the
pump’s power supply cord. DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION
CORD. Extension cords that are too long or too light do
not deliver sufcient voltage to the pump motor. But more
important, they could present a safety hazard if the insulation
were to become damaged or the connection end were to fall
into the sump.
3. Testing for Ground. As a safety measure, each electrical
outlet should be checked for ground using an Underwriters
Laboratory Listed circuit analyzer which will indicate if the
power, neutral and ground wires are correctly connected to
your outlet. If they are not, call a qualied electrician.
4. For electrical safety, it is recommended that a GFCI be
installed.
5. FOR YOUR PROTECTION, ALWAYS DISCONNECT PUMP
FROM ITS POWER SOURCE BEFORE HANDLING. Single
phase pumps are supplied with a 3-prong grounded plug to
help protect you against the possibility of electrical shock.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, REMOVE
THE GROUND PIN. To reduce the risk of electrical shock,
a properly grounded receptacle of grounding type must be
installed and protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter
(GFCI) in accordance with national electrical code and local
codes.
6. Installation and checking of electrical circuits and hardware
should only be performed by a qualied licensed electrician.
7. Risk of electric shock - These pumps have not been
investigated for use in swimming pool and marine areas.
8. According to the state of California (Prop 65), this product
contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause
cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Overview

This document describes the Crawl Space Pumping System, Model S1108, manufactured by Star Water Systems. It provides installation instructions, performance characteristics, troubleshooting guidance, and warranty information for the device.

Function Description

The Crawl Space Pumping System is designed to manage water in crawl spaces by pumping it away. It is intended for use in areas where water accumulation is a concern, such as basements or crawl spaces, to prevent flooding and moisture-related issues. The system includes a pump, a basin (slotted or with an optional extension kit), and associated plumbing for discharge. It operates by collecting water in the basin and then activating the pump to discharge the water through a flexible hose to an appropriate drainage location. The system is designed for permanent installation and requires connection to a properly grounded electrical circuit.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: S1108
  • Manufacturer: Star Water Systems
  • Electrical Requirements: The pump must be plugged into a properly grounded, constant voltage source. It should be connected to a separately protected and properly grounded ground fault protected circuit.
  • Discharge Head: The pump performance curve indicates the relationship between total dynamic head (in feet/meters) and flow per minute (in gallons/liters).
    • At 5 feet (1.5 meters) head, the flow is 43 gallons (163 liters) per minute.
    • At 10 feet (3.0 meters) head, the flow is 34 gallons (129 liters) per minute.
    • At 15 feet (4.6 meters) head, the flow is 19 gallons (72 liters) per minute.
    • Shut-off Head: 19.25 feet (5.9 meters). This is the maximum head the pump can generate, at which point flow stops.
  • Maximum Vertical Lift: The installation should not exceed a maximum vertical lift of 16 feet.
  • Basin Level: The basin must be level within 1/8 inch across its diameter.
  • Backfill Material: Use backfill gravel that is larger than the slots in the basin.
  • Discharge Pipe: Do not use a discharge pipe smaller than the diameter of the hose kit.
  • Operating Temperature: Maximum operating temperature for Crawl Space Drain Pumps must not exceed 130°F (54°C).
  • Certifications: Pumps are tested to UL Standard UL778. CSA Certified pumps are certified to CSA Standard C22.2 No. 108.

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The system can be installed with a standard "slotted" basin or with an optional extension kit, depending on the depth requirements of the crawl space.
  • Weep Tiles/Drain Lines: The basin is designed to accommodate drain lines or weep tiles, allowing for efficient collection of water from the surrounding area.
  • Check Valve: A check valve is essential in the discharge line to prevent water from draining back into the pit, which can cause short cycling of the pump.
  • Freezing Protection: Instructions are provided for protecting the discharge line from freezing in cold climates, typically by burying the line below the frost line or ensuring it slopes away from the foundation.
  • Float Switch: The pump is equipped with a variable level float switch that automatically activates and deactivates the pump based on water levels in the basin.
  • Alarm Panel: An optional alarm panel (Item 7, P/N 10-1494) can be integrated into the system to provide alerts for high water levels or system malfunctions.
  • Weather Tight Junction Box: An optional weather tight junction box (Item 6, P/N 10-0770) is available for electrical connections, ensuring protection from environmental elements.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Inspection: The system should be inspected and tested for proper operation at least every 3 months.
  • Debris Removal: Regularly clean any debris from the pump reservoir and from under the float to ensure proper operation.
  • Weep Hole Maintenance: Clear any plugged weep holes to prevent air-locking of the pump.
  • Discharge Line Clearance: Ensure the discharge line is free of obstructions.
  • Electrical Safety: Always disconnect the pump from its power source before handling or servicing. Do not carry or lift the pump by its power cord.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide is provided to diagnose common issues such as the pump not starting, tripping overload, short cycling, not shutting off, or operating without delivering water.
  • Professional Assistance: For complex issues or if the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact an authorized service station or a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to service or disassemble the pump yourself if you are not qualified.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase by the end user, or 18 months from the date of original manufacture, whichever comes first. The warranty excludes damage due to misuse, improper installation, neglect, alteration, accident, or exposure to abrasive or corrosive substances.
