This document provides installation and operation instructions for Star Waffle Bakers, specifically non-electronic models SWCB, SWB7R1, SWB7R2, SWB7RB, SWB7RBS, SWB8SQ, SWB8RBD, and SWB8RBL. The manual emphasizes safety, proper installation, and maintenance procedures to ensure efficient and safe operation of the waffle bakers.
Function Description
The Star Waffle Bakers are commercial appliances designed for baking waffles. They feature non-electronic controls for temperature and time management, making them suitable for food service locations. The units are available in various configurations, including single and double grid assemblies, and different grid types (Belgian, square, and cone). Some models are equipped with Teflon-coated grids for non-stick performance. The primary function is to cook waffle batter evenly and efficiently, with options for adjusting baking time and temperature to suit different preferences and waffle types.
Important Technical Specifications
The waffle bakers are designed for commercial use and require proper electrical installation.
- Power Supply: The units operate on A.C. voltage and are equipped with a 3-conductor load cord with a grounding type plug. Specific models may require 120V, 240V, or 230V CE power.
- Elements: Element wattages vary by model and voltage. For example, SWB7RB models use 500W elements (120V or 240V), while SWB8RBL models use 660W elements (120V or 240V). SWB7R1/SWB7R2 models use 475W elements (120V or 240V), and SWB8SQ models use 855W elements (120V or 240V) or 790W elements (120V or 240V).
- Fuses: 230V CE models are equipped with fuses, typically 8A 250V.
- Timers and Temperature Controllers: Non-electronic models feature time and temperature controllers. Some models allow for changing temperature display between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
- Grid Types: Available grids include 7" Belgian, 8" Belgianlite, 7" Belgian Coated, 8" Square, and 8" Cone. Teflon-coated grids are available on some models (e.g., SWB7RBS, SWB8RBD).
- Construction: The units feature a body assembly, yoke assembly, hinge tube assembly, and various internal components such as RTD probes, relays, and transformers.
Usage Features
- Pre-heating: Units require 15-20 minutes of pre-heating with grids closed to reach proper temperature.
- Waffle Baking Process:
- Lift lid, pour in mix, and close.
- Rotate grids 180° (Belgian units only).
- Start timer by pressing the start/stop pad.
- Depress start/stop pad when timer beeps.
- Rotate grids 180° (Belgian units only).
- Remove waffle (avoid metal utensils on Teflon-coated grids).
- Repeat for subsequent waffles.
- Time Adjustment: The factory pre-set timer can be adjusted using "up" and "down" buttons. The start/stop button is used to increase or decrease baking time.
- Temperature Adjustment (Models with Time and Temperature Controllers):
- To view temperature, depress and hold "TEMP" and press "START/STOP".
- Use "+" to increase and "-" to decrease temperature.
- Press "START/STOP" to lock the temperature.
- To switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, hold "TEMP" and toggle the lighted switch "OFF" then "ON".
- Release Agent: If necessary, brush release agent onto grids. Spraying is discouraged as it can oversaturate grids and cause damage.
- Seasoning (Non-Teflon Grids): Apply vegetable oil, butter, or grid release agent with a pastry brush, preheat for 20 minutes, re-apply, and heat for 5 more minutes.
- Helpful Hints:
- Turn off baker during long slack periods; keep on with grids closed during short slack periods to minimize carbon buildup.
- Cold batter takes longer to bake.
- Proper shortening in batter is important for waffle release.
Maintenance Features
- Cleaning (Non-Teflon Grids):
- Clean outside daily with a soft cloth and mild soap.
- Clean grids with hot water and mild detergent and a nylon brush to prevent carbon buildup.
- To remove carbon, unplug, place ammonia-soaked cloth over the bottom grid, close, and leave overnight. Use a nylon brush to remove buildup.
- If using commercial carbon remover, ensure it is safe for aluminum.
- Cleaning (Teflon-Coated Grids):
- Clean outside with a soft cloth and mild soap.
- CAUTION: Do not use metal utensils, abrasives, or abrasive cleaners on Teflon grids, as this will void the warranty.
- General Cleaning Precautions:
- CAUTION: Do not clean using a water jet or similar device.
- CAUTION: Do not immerse in water at any time.
- Repairs: Contact an authorized service agent for service or maintenance. Record model number, serial number, voltage, and purchase date for faster service.
- Warranty: Star products have a one (1) year limited warranty on parts and labor in the United States and Canada. Specific components like Teflon/Dura-Tec coatings have a one-year warranty under normal use and reasonable care. The warranty does not cover damage from improper cleaning, metallic utensils, or abrasives. "Special Products" have a six-month warranty on parts and ninety days on labor. The warranty is void if the unit is disassembled, tampered with, improperly installed, misused, operated with wrong voltage/gas, or contrary to instructions. Portable equipment must be taken to a service agency.
