Managerial chair: 451-141, 141M, 171, 171M, 147, 147M, 177 and 177M
Operator chair: 454-150, 150M, 180, 180M, 151, 151M, 152, 152M, 181, 181M, 182 and 182M

Variable Back Locking Mechanism Replacement Steps

Step 1: Prepare Chair for Disassembly

Invert the chair and remove the outer back shell and screws.

Step 2: Remove Adjustable Control Arm

Detach the adjustable control arm from the pawl using a screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove Pivot Pin and Overcenter Spring

Remove the retainer ring, pivot pin, overcenter spring, and pawl.

Step 4: Remove Pivot Bushings

Remove retainer rings from pivot bushings and discard bushings.

Step 5: Remove Housing and Gear Assembly

Turn and lift the housing and gear assembly off the chair.

Step 6: Remove U-Joint Assembly

Remove the retainer ring and slide out the U-joint assembly.

Step 7: Install New Parts and Adjust Control Arm

Install new U-joint assembly, grease, and adjust control arm length.

Step 8: Reassemble and Verify Functionality

Reattach the outer back shell and test all chair functions.
