Kickback:
Kickback occurs when the nose of the bar and especially
the upper quadrant contacts a solid object or is pinched.
The chain
is
stopped, causing a rotational force
in
the
opposite direction flinging the bar
in
an
uncontrolled arc
towards the operator, who may suffer severe or fatal injury.
lit
most frequently occurs during limbing.
It
also occurs
when the tip of the gUide bar
is
pinched unexpectedly,
unintentionally contacts solid material or
is
incorrectly
used to begin a plunge or boring cut.
The best protection from personal injury that may result
from kickback is to avoid kickback situations:
1.
Be aware of the location of
tRe
guide bar nose during
any cut.
2.
Be alert for shifting of log or otherforces that may cause
the cut to close.
3.
Use extreme caution when re-entering a previous cut.
4.
Do
not attempt plunge cuts or bore cuts if you are not
experienced with these cutting techniques.
5.
Never bring the tip of the bar
in
contact with any object.
6.
Cut only one log at a time.
7.
Begin cutting at full throttle.
8.
Maintain saw chain properly. Cut with a correctly
sharpened properly tensioned chain at all times.
