Chain brake maintenance
The chain brake is subject to normal
wear and tear. It must therefore be
checked and serviced regularly by
trained personnel (e.g. STIHL dealer) at
the following intervals:
At temperatures below 50 °F,
preheat the carburetor as follows:
: Use the combination wrench or a
screwdriver to ease the shutter (1)
out of the summer position (s).
: Fit the shutter in the winter position
(r at top) – as shown in the
illustration.
Heated air from around the cylinder now
flows around the carburetor – this helps
prevent carburetor icing.
: At temperatures above 68 °F:
Return the shutter to the summer
position (s).
This is essential to avoid engine
running problems and overheating.
At temperatures below 14°F
It is advisable to use the cover plate
mounting kit (special accessory) in
extremely cold operating conditions
(temperatures below 14 °F, in powder or
drifting snow).
If engine idle speed is erratic or
acceleration is poor:
: Turn low speed screw (L) 1/4 turn
counterclockwise.
It is usually necessary to change the
setting of the idle speed screw (LA)
after making adjustments to the low
speed screw (L) – see “Adjusting the
Carburetor”.
