Overview

The Stoneridge SE5000-8 is a digital tachograph designed for commercial vehicles, providing comprehensive recording and management of driver and vehicle data. It ensures compliance with national and international regulations by automatically recording driving, rest, availability, and work times, as well as vehicle speed and distance.

Function Description:

The SE5000-8 serves as a central hub for driver and vehicle data, offering a range of functionalities to support fleet management and regulatory compliance. Its core function is the accurate and secure recording of driver activities, which are stored on both the driver's smart card and the vehicle unit's internal memory. This data is crucial for monitoring driver working hours, ensuring road safety, and preventing unauthorized access to vehicle data.

The device supports automatic activity changes for both driver and co-driver when the ignition key is switched on or off, with configurable default activities such as "No change," "Rest," "Available," or "Work." This feature streamlines daily operations and reduces the need for manual input.

A key aspect of its functionality is the "Company Lock-in" and "Company Lock-out" system. The lock-in procedure, performed by inserting a company card, prevents unauthorized access to tachograph data and ensures that data is recorded under the correct company's ownership. Conversely, the lock-out procedure is essential when transferring the tachograph to another company or owner, preventing the recording of new user data under the previous company's name and securing existing data. It is recommended to download all data before performing a lock-out.

The SE5000-8 also includes an automatic local time adjustment for Daylight Saving Time, prompting the user for acknowledgment or cancellation on the last Sunday in March and October. This ensures that time recordings are always accurate according to local regulations.

For data retrieval, the device facilitates Vehicle Unit Download. This process involves removing the printer cassette, attaching download equipment to the 6-pin connector, and initiating the download while the ignition is ON. The display provides status messages, indicating whether the download is "busy," "complete," or "failed," allowing for troubleshooting if necessary.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical specifications like memory capacity, processor speed, or exact dimensions are not detailed in the provided manual excerpt, the device's design implies robust data storage capabilities for compliance with legal retention periods. The use of smart cards for drivers and companies indicates adherence to secure data handling standards. The 6-pin download connector is a standard interface for tachograph data retrieval, ensuring compatibility with various download tools. The display, showing time, activity, and status messages, is designed for clear visibility and user interaction.

Usage Features:

The SE5000-8 is designed for user-friendliness, with intuitive navigation and clear prompts.

  • Display and Navigation: The display shows essential information such as time (e.g., "1 00h30 00h00T," "2 05h48 16:30") and status messages. Navigation is managed through "Up/Down," "OK," "Driver," and "Co-driver" buttons, along with a "Back" button for returning to previous menus or the standard display.
  • Card Handling: Inserting a driver or co-driver card involves pressing and holding the respective button to open the tray, inserting the card chip-upward, and gently pushing the tray forward to close. Withdrawing a card requires pressing and holding the button again, then either lifting the card slightly from underneath or pushing the tray edge down until the card pops out. Card handling is only possible when the vehicle is not moving.
  • Default Activity Setting: Users can easily configure default activities (No change, Rest, Available, Work) for ignition on/off events via the "Settings" and "Parameters" menus.
  • Company Lock-in/Lock-out: These procedures are initiated by inserting a company card and navigating through the "COMP LOCKS" menu, with clear prompts for confirmation (YES/NO).
  • Daylight Saving Time Adjustment: The device automatically prompts for time changes, requiring user confirmation or cancellation.
  • Vehicle Unit Download: The process is guided by on-screen messages, indicating the status of the download.

Maintenance Features:

The manual highlights a key maintenance feature:

  • Printer Cassette Removal: For vehicle unit data download, the first step is to "Remove the printer cassette." This suggests that the printer cassette is a user-serviceable part, likely for paper replacement or to facilitate access to other components during maintenance or data download. While not explicitly stated, this implies that the device includes an integrated printer for generating printouts of driver activities, summaries, or event data, which is a common feature in digital tachographs for roadside checks or record-keeping.

The overall design emphasizes ease of operation and compliance, with clear instructions for common tasks and a focus on secure data management. For detailed information, users are directed to the Driver & Company Manual or the Stoneridge website, indicating comprehensive support documentation.
