Intheearlystagesofafire,smallerwoodpiecesandmoreairflowisthekey.
Biggerpiecesofwoodabsorbmoreheatbeforetheystarttoburn,sotheytendtolowerthetemperature
ofthefirebox.Thisiswhyyoushoulduselargerlogsonlyafterthefireisalreadyhotwithagoodbedof
emberswhichcanstoreexcessheat.

Followthisproceduretogetyourfirestartedasquicklyaspossible:
• Placeoneortwofirelightersinthecentreofthefirebox
• Placekindlinginacrisscrosspatternoverthefirelighters,andcontinuetilla“tipi”orsmallpyramid
shapeisformed.
• Addafew(5‐6)smallpiecesofwoodontopofthepyramid,andafewmorepiecesaroundthe
edgesofthefireboxtillthefireboxis1/4fulloffuel.
• Puttheaircontrolonhigh(Thehighpositionismarkedontheslidecontrol)
• Lightthefire.
• Leavethedoorslightlyajarforafewminutestoallowmaximumairflow.Donotallowthefiretobe
unattendedwhilethedoorisajar.
• Afterafewminutes,placeafewmorepiecesofwoodontotheflames.Forthenext10minutes,
placeprogressivelymoreandlargerpiecesofwoodontotheflamesuntilastrongfireandabedof
embershaveformed.
• Afterabout30minutesfromacoldstart,turntheairslidecontroltomedium.

Keepingafireburningwellisbothpleasurableandefficient.
• Theheaterisdesignedtoburnmostefficientlywhenthe
slidecontrolisonmedium(halfwaybetweenlowandhigh).
Youshouldleaveitonthissettingexceptduringovernight
burns.
• Asyouaddlargelogs,ensurethefireremainshotenough.
Turntheaircontroltohighforafewminutestohelpgetthe
fireboxbackuptotemperaturequickly.
Placethelogsfronttoback(iewiththeirendsfacingthedoor)
astheywillburnbetter.
