This document provides the instruction manual for the Super Handy Wood Chipper, a petrol engine-powered device designed for breaking up leaves and wooded pieces such as tree branches, brush, and limbs into smaller volume. It achieves this via a high-speed rotor containing chipping blades and shredding hammers.
Important Technical Specifications
The Super Handy Wood Chipper, identified by Item No. LCE12, boasts a maximum chipping capacity of 3 inches. It is equipped with 2 chipping knives and features a reduction rate of 15:1, meaning it can significantly reduce the volume of processed material. The chipping knives are made from CR12MoV material, known for its durability.
The hopper dimensions are 13.1x10.8 inches, and it includes a limb chute. The unit is powered by a Rato OHV engine with a power output of 7HP and a displacement of 212CC. It uses a recoil starting system and operates at an RPM of 3600. The fuel capacity is 0.7 gallons, and it uses SAE 30W oil. The chipper is EPA3 and CARB approved, indicating compliance with environmental standards.
The unit's wheels are 10x3 inches, made of PU, and are solid type. The net weight of the chipper is 87.5 LB, with a gross weight of 99 LB. Its assembled dimensions are 34.6x32.2x22.8 inches, and the packing dimensions are 30.3x28.7x18.1 inches.
Usage Features
The chipper is designed for outdoor use and should be operated on a flat, level, sturdy surface. Users must wear sturdy footwear and safety goggles, avoiding loose clothing that could get caught in moving parts. Hands, fingers, feet, or any other body part should never be placed near the discharge opening, hopper, or chipper chute while the machine is in operation. The unit should only be operated by responsible adults familiar with the instructions, and children must be kept away from the equipment.
Before starting, the work area must be clear of other people and foreign objects. Secure footing and solid balance are essential during operation. The machine should only be operated in daylight or good artificial light, and never under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Eye and hearing protection are mandatory.
The chipper is specifically designed to handle tree limbs and branches up to approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter. Tree branches should be inserted large-end first into the chipper cone. Users should stand to the side of the chipper cone when feeding material to avoid kick-back. Material should not be allowed to build up in the discharge area or shredding chamber, as this can cause kick-back.
For starting the engine, users should refer to the engine manual and ensure the engine is running at full throttle before chipping. To stop the engine, follow the shut-down procedure in the engine manual, typically by moving the throttle to the SLOW position and then to STOP ENGINE.
Fuel handling requires extreme care due to its flammability. Fuel should be added outdoors in a well-ventilated area, never near ignition sources or to a hot engine. Only approved fuel containers should be used, and spills must be cleaned immediately. The engine is shipped without oil, so engine oil must be added before the first start.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the chipper. A detailed schedule is provided, including checks before each use, every 5 hours, 25 hours, 100 hours, 250 hours, and seasonally (spring & fall).
Before each use:
- Check for loose hardware.
- Inspect cone, hopper, and guards for damage or missing parts.
- Clean debris from the engine and chipper, especially around the air shroud intake, air filter, and muffler.
- Check oil level.
Every 5 hours (and spring & fall):
- Inspect the unit for loose hardware or components, paying attention to the chipper cone, hopper, axle, and front leg.
Every 25 hours:
- Inspect/Rotate Shredding Hammers.
- Inspect/Rotate Chipping Knives.
Every 100 hours:
- Clean debris from the engine and chipper.
- Remove the engine air shroud and clean out any debris from the engine cooling fins (recommended to be performed by an authorized dealer).
Yearly or every 50 hours:
- Check spark plug.
- Service air cleaner.
Spring & Fall:
- Check all safety labels for placement and damage.
The chipping knives should be sharpened or replaced when tree limbs require extra force to feed into the chipper cone. Sharpening should be done at a 39-degree angle until the distance between the edge of the blade bevel and the mounting hole is less than 1/16" (1.6mm).
Engine maintenance, including oil changes, spark plug checks, and air cleaner service, should follow the specific instructions in the engine manual. The first oil change is recommended after 5-8 hours of operation, and subsequent changes when the engine is warm, refilling with the recommended grade of oil.
Before any maintenance, the engine must be stopped, and the spark plug wire disconnected to prevent accidental starting. The troubleshooting chart provides common problems, their causes, and corrective actions, such as adding fuel for a non-starting engine, replacing air filters for black exhaust, or cleaning debris for slow chipping action.
