Overview

This manual describes the installation and operation of Superior Standard Series unvented fireboxes, specifically models UVFR-500, UVFR-600, UVFC-500, and UVFC-600. These fireboxes are designed to house decorative type unvented gas log room heaters and are not intended for burning solid wood or other materials. The UVFC series models feature a self-contained heat-circulating system, while the UVFR series are conventional radiant-heat unvented fireboxes.

Function Description:

The Superior Standard Series unvented fireboxes serve as enclosures for gas-fired decorative type ventless room heaters. They are designed to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing housing for these heaters, allowing for installation into various architectural settings such as framed walls with mantels or hearth extensions. The fireboxes are built to accept ANSI Z21.11.2 approved unvented gas log room heaters, ensuring compatibility and safety when used with appropriate log sets. The primary function is to contain the unvented gas log heater and direct its heat output into the room, with the UVFC models offering forced air circulation for enhanced heat distribution.

  • Gas Line: Recommended 1/2" gas line, with a knockout for entry located at the bottom and slightly off-center in the side refractories.
  • Electrical: For circulating models (UVFC series) with optional blower kits, a 120V main power supply is required. Electrical connections must be made by a qualified, licensed electrician and grounded in accordance with local codes or ANSI/NFPA 70.
  • Clearances:
    • Sidewall: At least 16" from any combustible wall.
    • Ceiling: At least 40" from the top of the firebox opening.
    • Front: Curtains, furniture, clothing, or other flammable objects must be at least 42" from the front of the unvented room heater.
    • Mantel: Minimum 18" from fireplace opening to bottom of mantel, with specific safe zone requirements for mantel depth (3" depth requires 9" minimum from opening, 8" max depth requires 18" minimum from opening).
  • Fuel Type: Designed for Natural Gas or Propane (L.P.G.) unvented room heaters. An external regulator is required for all propane heaters to reduce supply tank pressure to 13" w.c. (maximum).
  • Approvals: Tested and approved as Ventless Firebox Enclosures for Gas-Fired Decorative Type Ventless Room Heaters to IAS 2-97.

Usage Features:

  • Unvented Design: These fireboxes are designed for use with unvented gas log heaters, meaning they do not require a chimney or vent pipe to the outside. This simplifies installation and allows for greater flexibility in placement within a home.
  • Heat Circulation (UVFC Models): The UVFC series includes a self-contained heat-circulating system, which can be enhanced with optional blower kits (FBK-100 or FBK-200). These blowers help distribute warm air more effectively throughout the room, improving heating efficiency.
  • Aesthetic Versatility: The fireboxes can be finished with a wide variety of noncombustible materials such as marble, stone, tile, or brick, allowing for diverse decorative styles from formal to rustic. Optional decorative volcanic stone (Model FDVS) is available to enhance the look of the appliance.
  • Safety Features: The design incorporates specific clearances to combustible materials and mandates the installation of a canopy hood to ensure safe operation and compliance with mantel clearance requirements. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper combustion and ventilation air provisions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Gas Type Compatibility: The fireboxes are compatible with both natural gas and propane (L.P.G.) unvented room heaters, provided the correct log set and gas supply pressure are used.
  • Easy Gas Line Access: A designated knockout in the side refractory allows for convenient gas line entry into the firebox.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: The heater should be inspected before each use and at least annually by a professional service person. More frequent cleaning may be necessary if there is excessive lint from carpeting or bedding.
  • Cleanliness: It is crucial to keep control compartments, burners, and circulating air passageways of the heater clean to prevent excessive dust accumulation, which can lead to increased carbon monoxide formation.
  • Part Replacement: An exploded view and replacement parts list are provided in the manual, allowing owners to identify and order specific components if needed. When ordering, it is important to provide the model and serial number of the firebox, part number, description, quantity, and installation date.
  • Service Access: The design allows for access to internal components for servicing. Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing must be replaced and/or closed before operating the heater.
  • Cool-Down Period: Always allow the heater to cool before performing any service work.
  • Gas and Electrical Shut-Off: For safety during service, the gas supply and electricity to the heater must be shut off. The appliance and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during pressure tests exceeding 1/2 psig. For tests at or below 1/2 psig, the heater must be isolated by closing its individual manual shut-off valve.
  • Water Damage Protocol: If any part of the heater has been submerged in water, it must not be used. A qualified service technician should be called immediately to inspect and replace any affected parts of the control system and gas control.
