Overview

This document serves as a comprehensive manual for a SYM 4-stroke air-cooled scooter, detailing its operation, safety guidelines, and maintenance procedures. It emphasizes the importance of proper usage for a comfortable and safe riding experience, as well as regular inspection and maintenance to maximize performance and prolong the scooter's service life.

Function Description

The scooter is equipped with a range of components designed for efficient and safe operation. The ignition switch controls the electrical system, allowing the engine to start and various lights and indicators to function. A smart lock system enhances security, offering anti-theft alerts with sound and light warnings, silent alerts, and automatic locking features. The smart lock can be released via a remote control, and in case of abnormal conditions, a switch key can be used. The system also incorporates protection against malicious operation of the solenoid valve and PKE (Passive Keyless Entry) functions, temporarily disabling them if unusual activity is detected.

The gauges provide essential information to the rider, including a speedometer for driving speed, an odometer for total distance traveled, and a fuel meter indicating the remaining fuel. Indicator lights are present for high beam, turn signals (left/right), ABS (Anti-lock Brake System), and fault conditions. The ABS indicator normally illuminates briefly upon ignition and then turns off; if it remains on, it signals a malfunction, though the conventional brake system will still operate. A cooling temperature indicator alerts the rider to engine cooling water temperature issues, while a low fuel warning light illuminates when fuel levels are low. An engine oil change warning lamp reminds users to replace the oil after a certain mileage. The display also allows for switching between kilometers and miles, resetting trip mileage, and setting the clock.

Buttons and Controls are strategically placed for easy access. The electrical starter button initiates engine starting when the main switch is on and a brake lever is held. A high/low beam switch toggles between high and low headlight beams. The hazard warning switch activates both front and rear turn signal lights simultaneously for emergency situations. An engine stop switch allows for immediate engine shutdown in emergencies. The passing switch activates the high beam temporarily to warn other drivers when overtaking. The horn switch sounds the horn when pressed. Turn signal switches activate the left or right turn signals to indicate intended direction changes.

For storage, the scooter features a storage box located under the seat, with a maximum load capacity of 10kg. It is advised not to store valuables or thermal-sensitive objects due to engine heat. A safety helmet hook is provided for securing a helmet when the scooter is stopped, but not while riding. The fuel tank cap is accessed via the ignition switch and should be properly tightened after refueling to prevent fuel leakage.

The braking system includes both front and rear wheel brakes, which should be used simultaneously for effective stopping. The manual cautions against sudden or continuous braking to prevent overheating and reduced efficiency, especially on slippery roads. Even with ABS, braking during cornering should be limited. The scooter also utilizes an engine brake by returning the throttle valve handle to its original position, useful for controlling speed on slopes.

Usage Features

Before riding, it is crucial to perform a pre-delivery inspection and maintenance. Riders are advised to wear a safety helmet with a tightened chin belt, wear tight-sleeved clothing, hold the steering handle with both hands, observe speed limits, and wear suitable low-heel shoes. The manual stresses the importance of a relaxed posture while riding, with the body's gravity centered on the saddle, to maintain stability and react quickly. Overloading the scooter, especially on the front pedals, can affect riding safety and steering.

Starting the engine requires turning the ignition switch to "ON," applying the hand rear wheel brake, and pressing the starter button without accelerating. If the engine doesn't start easily, the throttle valve handle can be turned 1/8 to 1/4 turns. Continuous pressing of the starter button for more than 15 seconds should be avoided to prevent damage. For cold starts or after long periods of idleness, multiple attempts with the kick starter arm and throttle adjustment may be necessary. When using the kick starter, the main parking stand must firmly support the motorcycle.

Driving off involves turning on the turn signal light, ensuring no vehicles are approaching from behind, and then slowly rotating the throttle valve handle. Acceleration is achieved by slowly turning the throttle valve handle, while deceleration involves returning it to its original position.

Parking requires turning on the turn signal light early, approaching slowly, returning the throttle valve handle, and applying brakes. Once stopped, the ignition switch should be turned to "OFF." The scooter should be parked on level ground where it won't obstruct traffic, and the main stand should be firmly engaged. Locking the steering handle and removing the key are essential to prevent theft.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides a detailed periodical maintenance schedule, outlining inspection, cleaning, adjustment, and replacement intervals for various components. This schedule is based on monthly 1000 kilometers or whichever comes first.

Routine inspection before riding includes checking engine oil levels, fuel quantity (Octane 90 or above unleaded fuel is recommended), brake free play (10-20mm for both front and rear levers), tire pressure (2.0kg/cm² for single rider, 2.25 kg/cm² for single rider, 2.5kg/cm² for two riders), steering handle vibration, speedometer, lights, rearview mirror operation, and tightness of main components. Any problems found during routine inspection should be corrected by an authorized service personnel.

Engine oil inspection and change involves supporting the motorcycle on a level ground, checking the oil level with the dipstick, and adding oil if necessary. The manual specifies oil capacity (1.4L, 1.2L for routine change) and recommends API SJ MA 10W-30 or better engine oil (specifically SM 10W-50). The oil filter element should be cleaned by removing foreign materials with gasoline or an air spraying gun. Oil emulsification can be avoided by warming up at regular intervals, running the car for a minute every time, driving at least 10 km once a month, and replacing oil every 3 months or 3000km.

Fuel inspection involves checking the fuel gauge and ensuring the use of unleaded fuel of Octane 90 or above. The fuel tank should not be overfilled, and the cap must be tightened properly.

Transmission oil inspection and change requires supporting the motorcycle on a level ground, draining the oil, checking for decreased volume, and refilling with new transmission oil (160c.c.). Genuine SYM HYPOLD GEAR OIL (SAE 85W-140) is recommended.

Brake free play inspection and adjustment involves checking the free play of the hand-braking lever (10-20mm). If the brake lining is excessively worn, indicated by the arrow on the brake arm aligning with the "△" mark on the brake disk, immediate replacement is necessary. Adjustment is done by turning the adjustment nut on the brake arm.

Disc brake inspection includes visual checks for leakage or damage in brake lines, and checking the brake fluid level in the reservoir (WELL RUN BRAKE OIL (DOT 3) is recommended). Replenishment of brake fluid involves loosening the master cylinder cover, cleaning the reservoir, removing the diaphragm, adding fluid to the upper level, and reassembling. Only recommended brake fluids should be used, and care should be taken to avoid spilling fluid on painted or plastic components.

Throttle valve handle clearance adjustment ensures a correct clearance of 2-6mm. This involves loosening the lock nut, turning the adjust nut, and then securely tightening the lock nut.

Battery inspection and maintenance for the maintenance-free battery involves cleaning terminals if dirt or corrosion is present. Battery removal requires turning off the ignition, disconnecting the negative cable first, then the positive cable. Reinstallation is in reverse order. If the battery needs replacement, a same closed-type battery (Maintenance-Free) should be used.

Tire inspection involves checking and inflating tires to the specified pressure when cold, and visually inspecting for cracks, damage, nails, or stones. The tread wear indicator should be checked, and worn-out tires replaced immediately.

Steering handle front shock absorbers inspection involves checking for damage, noises, tightness of bolts and nuts, and any looseness or excessive resistance in the steering handle.

Checking and changing fuses involves turning off the ignition, removing the storage box to access the fuse holder, and replacing blown fuses with new ones of the same amperage rating. Using incorrect fuses or wires is strictly prohibited.

Checking the turn signal lights and horn involves turning on the ignition, verifying that all signal lights flash and the warning buzzer sounds, and checking the horn's functionality.

Checking the front and rear lights involves starting the engine, confirming that the headlamp and rear lamp illuminate, and checking their brightness and direction.

Checking the brake light involves turning on the ignition and holding the hand-braking levers to ensure the brake lights come on.

Checking for fuel leakage involves inspecting the fuel tank, fuel cup, fuel hose, and carburetor.

Checking the lubrication of body's various mechanisms involves checking pivot points on the main stand, side stand, and brake levers for adequate lubrication.

Checking the spark plug involves removing the cap and spark plug, cleaning carbon deposits, adjusting the electrode gap to 0.7-0.8 mm, and then hand-tightening and further tightening with a wrench. Only spark plugs suitable for the engine specifications should be used.

Checking the air cleaner involves removing mounting screws, the cover, and the filter element for cleaning. Regular cleaning is essential, especially when riding on dusty roads, to prevent reduced horsepower and increased fuel consumption. Improper installation can lead to dust absorption and premature engine wear.
